Jugada maestra / How to make a killing (2026): Movie Review
Esta comedia negra tiene muchos puntos a favor, resultando ser muy entretenida, pues nos llevan por la vida de un hombre en sus minutos finales, previo a ser ejecutado, donde confiesa todos crímenes frente a un padre, que escucha atentamente, pero para nuestra sorpresa, el relato tendrá sus giros de trama, culminando en un final que realmente no esperaba, pues pensaba que los hechos y los intereses de los implicados, darían una conclusión diferente, y fue algo que me gustó, pues se salen del típico cliché de estas historias.
This dark comedy has many strengths, proving to be very entertaining. It takes us through the life of a man in his final moments before his execution, where he confesses all his crimes to a father who listens attentively. But to our surprise, the story has its plot twists, culminating in an ending I didn't expect. I thought the events and the interests of those involved would lead to a different conclusion, and I liked that, as it breaks away from the typical clichés of these stories.
La premisa se basa en la crueldad del estatus, pues la madre de Becket, la favorita del patriarca de la familia, por lo que sabremos más adelante, en un acto de rebeldía y amor, decide desvincularse de su familia al quedar embarazada de un muchacho sin estatus, que para agregar más tragedia a la historia, muere durante el parto, al desmayarse y golpearse la cabeza. Pese a que la vida es difícil, la madre le enseña lo necesario para que Becket se desarrolle en un ambiente con clase, aunque este no se sienta totalmente cómodo en este ambiente, por los prejuicios de quienes les rodean.
The premise is based on the cruelty of social status, as Becket's mother, the patriarch's favorite, as we later learn, in an act of rebellion and love, decides to break away from her family when she becomes pregnant by a young man of low social standing. Adding to the tragedy, the boy dies during childbirth after fainting and hitting his head. Despite the hardships of life, his mother teaches Becket what he needs to thrive in a classy environment, even though he doesn't feel entirely comfortable there due to the prejudices of those around them.

La obsesión por mantener esa fachada de impolutividad llega al extremo máximo, y aunque la madre de Becket enferma, nadie de su familia se acerca para ayudarla, lo que hace que Mary Redfellow se enterrada en un cementerio común, fuera del reconocimiento que merecía. Esto hace que el protagonista viva en diferentes casas de acogida, lo que hace que su odio crezca lentamente, hasta que llegado a un punto, su conformismo lo hunde muy profundamente en su ser, y solo ver a un amor de su infancia, con la pena que conlleva su posición actual como un vendedor de trajes, reaviva todas esas viejas heridas.
The obsession with maintaining this facade of purity reaches its extreme, and even when Becket's mother falls ill, no one in his family comes to her aid, resulting in Mary Redfellow being buried in a common cemetery, denied the recognition she deserved. This forces the protagonist to live in various foster homes, causing his hatred to slowly fester, until at a certain point, his complacency sinks him deep within, and simply seeing a childhood sweetheart, with the sorrow that accompanies his current position as a suit salesman, reopens all those old wounds.
Y aquí salen a flote varias de nuestras características humanas más oscuras, pues su pésima situación laboral y personal, asi como la codicia de estar cerca de una fortuna que no alcanzaría una vida para acabarla; lo llevan a ir eliminando a uno a uno a sus familiares, de formas divertidas e ingeniosas, con las que sorprendentemente, se va saliendo con la suya. A esta altura, conecta con uno de sus tíos, que lo hace sentir valioso e importante, tiene una novia que lo ama y es considerado exitoso, pero esto no es suficiente, por lo que llegará al final para reclamar lo que piensa que es suyo por derecho.
And here several of our darkest human characteristics surface, as his terrible work and personal situation, along with his greed for a fortune that wouldn't last a lifetime, leads him to eliminate his family members one by one in amusing and ingenious ways, surprisingly, and he manages to get away with it. At this point, he connects with one of his uncles, who makes him feel valued and important; he has a girlfriend who loves him and is considered successful, but this isn't enough, so he will go to the end to claim what he believes is rightfully his.
Y más allá de que el ritmo es por momentos frenético, viendo como se desarrollan sus planes muy rápidamente, tienen una adecuada construcción del personaje protagonista, permitiendo crear cierta empatia, porque aunque sus actos son atroces, entiendes el contexto que lo llevo a eso, además de que muchas veces lo adornan todo con cierta cantidad de comedia, que aligera un poco todo. Las escenas que más me gustan definitivamente son los entierros, por todo el simbolismo que tienen.
And while the pace is frenetic at times, with the rapid unfolding of their plans, the protagonist's character is well-developed, allowing for a degree of empathy. Although his actions are atrocious, you understand the context that led him to them, and the film often incorporates humor, which lightens the mood. My favorite scenes are definitely the funerals, due to their rich symbolism.
En cuanto a las actuaciones, Powell le da cierto carisma a su personaje en una buena actuación, y aunque la producción cuenta con otros grandes actores con menos tiempo en la pantalla, pienso que fue Margaret Qualley quien destacó mucho más, pues cada vez que estaba en pantalla era hipnótica, además le aportaba la locura necesaria de una villana, que al final, es la que termina ganando en todos los sentidos, siendo el fuego que inició todos los acontecimientos, y quien manipuló las acciones de Becket cuando este quería parar.
As for the performances, Powell brings a certain charisma to his character in a good performance, and although the production features other great actors with less screen time, I think it was Margaret Qualley who stood out much more, because every time she was on screen she was hypnotic, and she also brought the necessary madness of a villain, who in the end, is the one who ends up winning in every sense, being the fire that started all the events, and who manipulated Becket's actions when he wanted to stop.
En conclusión, la cinta tiene muchas cosas positivas, pues aunque se alejen mucho del realismo en muchos de los acontecimientos, lo que me ha enseñado la vida es que ambientes de multimillonarios y persona con alta influencia, lo que conocemos como normal, no sea la regla para ellos, y al tomar todo con cierto aire de comedia, la verdad, terminó gustándome más bien. Pero creo que lo mejor fue el final, porque no es el típico con enseñanza incluida, sino que es uno más crudo y que se acomoda más a lo que vemos generalmente, ilustrando que no siempre el bueno va a ganar.
In conclusion, the film has many positive aspects. Although it deviates significantly from realism in many of the events, what life has taught me is that environments of billionaires and highly influential people—what we consider normal—aren't the norm for them. And because it all takes a certain comedic tone, I ended up liking it more than I expected. But I think the best part was the ending, because it's not the typical moral lesson ending; instead, it's more raw and more in line with what we generally see, illustrating that the good guy doesn't always win.
