Una de las series animadas que más marcó mi infancia fue Los chicos del barrio, recuerdo con mi hermano intentar replicar su armas e implementos, usando desde envases a leche usados, hasta frascos de mostaza y resorteras, aunque nunca logramos conseguir la epicidad vista en la serie, jajaja. Aprovechando las fiestas, estaba buscando algo en que distraerme un rato, y al ver esta película, una parte de mi niño interno no me dejó mirar para otro lado.

One of the animated series that most influenced my childhood was Codename: Kids Next Door. I remember my brother and I trying to replicate their weapons and gadgets, using everything from milk cartons to mustard jars and slingshots, though we never quite achieved the epicness seen in the show, haha. With the holidays approaching, I was looking for something to distract me for a while, and when I saw this movie, a part of my inner child wouldn't let me look away.

La película se desarrolla una vez bien definido el universo de los chicos del barrio en la serie televisiva, viendo a Uno ya como una leyenda, siendo él mismo quien nos introduce en la temática de la cinta, la formación de los chicos del barrio y Cero, el primer y mejor agente de la historia, quien liberó la humanidad del yugo de El Abuelo, iniciando una nueva de paz y tranquilidad para los niños de todo el planeta. Luego de un ataque de Padre a diferentes centros de operaciones, Uno y su equipo terminan siendo los héroes gracias a las maniobras arriesgadas de su líder, pero pierden un objeto importante de su museo, el cual tiene el poder de recuperar los recuerdos.

The film unfolds after the established universe of the kids from the TV series, with Uno already a legend. He himself introduces us to the film's themes: the formation of the kids from the neighborhood and Zero, the first and greatest agent in history, who freed humanity from Grandpa's yoke, ushering in a new era of peace and tranquility for children across the globe. Following an attack by Father on various command centers, Uno and his team emerge as heroes thanks to their leader's daring maneuvers, but they lose a crucial artifact from their museum—an object with the power to restore memories.

Lo poético de todo esto, es que el mayor villano de la historia es el abuelo de Uno, y utilizan su propio ADN para reactivar el equipo, devolviendo sus recuerdos a Abuelo, quien inicia rápidamente su plan, transformando en ancianos a toda la población, poniéndolos a trabajar en una fábrica de tapioca, que anteriormente eran las mismas casas de los árboles de los chicos del barrio. En el proceso de contragolpe, Uno descubre la importancia de su linaje, conociendo a muchas leyendas para enfrentar esta nueva amenaza.

The poetic aspect of all this is that the story's greatest villain is Uno's grandfather, and they use his own DNA to reactivate the team, restoring Grandpa's memories. He quickly sets his plan in motion, transforming the entire population into elderly people and putting them to work in a tapioca factory—the same building that once housed the neighborhood kids' treehouses. In the ensuing counterattack, Uno discovers the importance of his lineage, meeting many legendary figures to help him confront this new threat.

Pero la vuelta de trama más hilarante fue ver que Padre, el mayor villano de la serie, es hermano de Cero, por lo tanto, es el tío de Uno, y su reacción, así como el doblaje, son simplemente para enmarcar. También vimos una historia de origen para los Chicos de la Otra Cuadra, quienes eran los Chicos del Barrio perdidos del sector Z, unas leyendas que fueron sometidos al control mental de Padre, transformándolos en los seres vomitivos que conocimos en la serie.

But the most hilarious plot twist was discovering that Father, the series' main villain, is Zero's brother, and therefore One's uncle. His reaction, as well as the voice acting, is simply priceless. We also saw an origin story for the Kids Next Door, who were the lost Kids Next Door from Sector Z, legends who were subjected to Father's mind control, transforming them into the nauseating beings we know from the series.

La química e ingenio del equipo principal de Chicos del barrio sigue siendo un fuerte de la historia, pero lo que más me gustó fue la relación entre Uno y su padre, Cero, que no solamente vemos que es el mejor agente de la organización, sino que además, es muy tenaz y siempre estaba un paso por delante de todos. Como reflexión final, conocer y entender el fin de un ciclo es importante para crecer, y el mensaje final de Cero fue simplemente perfecto, pues sabe que su etapa como niño terminó, por más que la amo y la disfrutó nuevamente en esta aventura, y ahora tiene la misión más importante de su vida, ser el mejor padre posible para Miguelón.

The chemistry and ingenuity of the main team in Kids Next Door remains a strength of the story, but what I liked most was the relationship between Uno and his father, Cero. We see that Cero is not only the best agent in the organization, but also incredibly tenacious and always one step ahead of everyone. As a final reflection, knowing and understanding the end of a cycle is important for growth, and Cero's final message was simply perfect. He knows that his time as a child is over, even though he loved it and enjoyed it again in this adventure, and now he has the most important mission of his life: to be the best father he can be to Miguelón.

En cuanto a la animación, mantiene el mismo que la serie animada, algo normal viendo que fue concebida para la televisión, pero si hablamos del doblaje, no solo es que mantiene la línea, sino que además es uno de los mejores trabajos que recuerdo, la libertad que se le dió a los actores de voz les permitió agregar modimos relacionados con la cultura latinoamericana, lo que nos regaló algunas joyitas con frases como "Chamaco perro" o "están construyendo sus tecnolocuras de 2x4", jajaja.

As for the animation, it's the same as the animated series, which is normal considering it was made for TV, But when it comes to the dubbing, not only does it maintain the same style, but it is also one of the best pieces of work I can remember. The freedom given to the voice actors allowed them to add expressions related to Latin American culture, which gave us some gems with phrases such as “Chamaco perro” (you little brat) or “están construyendo sus tecnolocuras de 2x4” (they're building their 2x4 technological marvels), jajaja.

En conclusión, esta cinta es muy entretenida, es una oda a mi infancia, representando una de las mejores series animadas de Cartoon Network, y aunque no tuvo el mismo impacto en la población anglosajona, en latinoamerica fue un boom, contando con un doblaje excepcional, que justamente podemos ver parte de esa grandeza en esta cinta, con modismo y referencias, que simplemente son hilarantes. No se pierdan la oportunidad de ver esta cinta y la serie animada, no se decepcionarán.

In conclusion, this film is incredibly entertaining; it's an ode to my childhood, representing one of Cartoon Network's best animated series. While it didn't have the same impact on the English-speaking world, it was a huge hit in Latin America, boasting exceptional dubbing. We can see some of that greatness reflected in this film, with slang and references that are simply hilarious. Don't miss the chance to see this film and the animated series; you won't be disappointed.
