Con esta película estoy un poco dividido, ya que al verla sin saber nada de su trasfondo, pensé que sería una típica historia de acción de un héroe de guerra o del ejército, pero cuando vi un robot gigante que destruía todo, quede bastante desorientado. Más allá del absurdismo detrás de ese primer párrafo, y viéndolo desde una perspectiva meramente de entretenimiento, no me pareció del todo mala, pero quiero desarrollar esto para que puedan entenderlo.

I'm a bit torn about this movie. Watching it without any prior knowledge, I thought it would be a typical action story about a war hero or the military, but when I saw a giant robot destroying everything, I was quite disoriented. Beyond the absurdity of that first paragraph, and viewing it purely from an entertainment perspective, I didn't think it was entirely bad, but I want to elaborate so you can understand.

La trama empieza en el medio oriente, donde dos hermanos se reúnen después de mucho tiempo, y deciden que se unirán a los Rangers, una unidad de élite del ejército americano, pero inmediatamente después son interceptados por un ataque enemigo, dejando como único sobreviviente a nuestro protagonista. Me llamó la atención que nunca se dijo su nombre en la cinta, por lo que únicamente lo conoceremos como 81, por el número que le asignan como candidato en las pruebas, solo 2 años después de ese terrible acontecimiento.

The story begins in the Middle East, where two brothers reunite after a long time and decide to join the Rangers, an elite unit of the U.S. Army. However, they are immediately intercepted by an enemy attack, leaving our protagonist as the sole survivor. I was struck by the fact that his name is never mentioned in the film; we only know him as 81, the number assigned to him as a candidate in the tests, just two years after that terrible event.

El candidato 81, protagonizado por Alan Richtson, es un prodigio físico, siendo capaz de pasar todas las pruebas con cierta facilidad, opacando al resto de participantes, pero por sus traumas no tratados, evitan el contacto con los demás, negándose incluso a liderar en varias de las pruebas. Esta falta de desarrollo social es una red flag para los evaluadores, que lo ven como un potencial factor que puede influir en una misión real negativamente, por lo que meditan muy seriamente su continuidad en la prueba.

Candidate 81, played by Alan Richtson, is a physical prodigy, easily passing all the tests and outshining the other participants. However, due to untreated trauma, he avoids contact with others, even refusing to lead in several of the tests. This lack of social development is a red flag for the evaluators, who see it as a potential factor that could negatively impact a real mission, and therefore seriously consider his continued participation in the test.

En esta parte nos enteramos que 81 es un héroe condecorado, pues en los informes describieron como cargó en hombros a su hermano por kilómetros, para luego enterarnos de la verdad, por sus heridas se desmayó, no pudiendo salvar a su hermano. Esta parte me pareció la mejor, por el trato de síndromes psicológicos como el estrés post traumático, viendo como no podía dormir por la culpa, lo que no dejaba que se relacionará con los demás, por el miedo a fallar nuevamente, así como la decisión errada de querer honrar la memoria de su hermano al entrar en los Rangers, sin anteriormente darse un tiempo o terapia adecuada, para resolver estos conflictos, por lo que incluso, fue rechazado para las pruebas en ocasiones anteriores. A partir de aquí, hay que apagar el chip del sentido común, porque se va todo al trasto, jajaja.

In this part, we learn that 81 is a decorated hero, as reports described how he carried his brother on his shoulders for miles, only to later discover the truth: he fainted from his injuries and couldn't save his brother. This part seemed the best to me because of its treatment of psychological syndromes like post-traumatic stress, showing how he couldn't sleep due to guilt, which prevented him from interacting with others for fear of failing again. It also highlights his misguided decision to want to honor his brother's memory by joining the Rangers without first taking the time or getting proper therapy to resolve these issues, which even led to him being rejected for the tests on previous occasions. From here on out, you have to turn off your common sense, because everything goes to hell, jajaja.

Y es que apenas comienzan la misión final, ven como algo surca el cielo, y dado el contexto en el que están, piensan que fueron bengalas o algo similar, por lo que apenas le dan importancia. Su misión es eliminar una nave amiga en terreno enemigo, por lo que al conseguir "esa nave", colocan los explosivos, y esta se transforma en una especie de transformer, que escanea el lugar y empieza a eliminar a todo lo que se consigue por delante, utilizando rayos láser y bombas tipo granadas, con una puntería excelente, jajaja.

They've barely begun their final mission when they see something streak across the sky. Given the circumstances, they assume it's flares or something similar, so they don't pay it much attention. Their mission is to destroy a friendly ship in enemy territory, so once they get hold of "that ship," they plant the explosives. It transforms into a kind of Transformer, scanning the area and then blasting away everything in its path with laser beams and grenade-like bombs, with impeccable aim, jajaja.

Con la introducción del villano, inicia el escape, viendo como poco a poco, el robot elimina a los candidatos a Rangers, adaptándose fácilmente a casi cualquier terreno, lo que cada vez se vuelve menos lógico, pues 81 sobrevive a situaciones muy locas, como el volcamiento de un vehículo militar que apenas se podía mantener unido, levantándose con lesiones menores. Como buen protagonista, ideá un plan donde elimina al robot gracias a sus conocimientos en ingeniería, quedando con la suficiente energía para arrastrar a su único compañero sobreviviente, para que al llegar a la base, se enteré que fue a invasión mundial, y sin más, consiga su parche como Ranger.

With the introduction of the villain, the escape begins, showing how, one by one, the robot eliminates the Ranger candidates, easily adapting to almost any terrain. This becomes increasingly illogical, as 81 survives some truly bizarre situations, like a military vehicle flipping over and barely staying together, getting up with only minor injuries. Like a true protagonist, he devises a plan to eliminate the robot using his engineering skills, leaving him with enough energy to drag his sole surviving comrade to the base. Upon arriving, the comrade learns that he was part of a global invasion, and without further ado, he earns his Ranger patch.

En conclusión, la película es una opción para distraerte un rato un domingo por la tarde, tiene buenas escenas de acción, y más allá de la falta de profundidad de personajes, que hace que cada muerte sea irrelevante, u otros aspectos más lógicos en la trama, es entretenida. La conclusión también fue absurda, pues por más patriotismo o ego que tenga el protagonista, con lo herido que se encuentraba, no creo que nadie se sume a una misión suicida de ese calibre, ya que no sólo eres un peligro para ti mismo, sino para todo el equipo, viendo como hasta se queda dormido en el helicóptero recién despegado.

In conclusion, the film is a good option for a bit of entertainment on a Sunday afternoon. It has some decent action scenes, and despite the lack of character depth, which makes each death seem irrelevant, and other more logical aspects of the plot, it's entertaining. The conclusion was also absurd, because no matter how much patriotism or ego the protagonist has, with how injured he was, I don't think anyone would join a suicide mission of that magnitude, since you are not only a danger to yourself, but to the whole team, seeing how he even falls asleep in the helicopter just after takeoff.
