I watched this movie for the first time a couple of years ago, with my wife @healthymary while we were locked during the pandemic.
"Campeones" is a 2018 Spanish film directed by Javier Fesser. The film tells the story of Marco (the main character), an assistant coach for a professional basketball team who gets into a drunk driving accident and is sentenced to community service at a center for people with intellectual disabilities. Before the accident he was a well-known

Those of you that follow me know that I am involved in the Wheelchair basketball since 2009 and since then I got in touch with people with physical handicap, mental handicaps and combination of both.

The last year, this film inspired me to accept the task of becoming the coach of a Wheelchair basketball team in a city close to where I live.

After the accident, Marco was forced to do social works to redeem himself, and since the judge knew his story and acknowledged his ego, Marco was sent to a local basketball team, Los Amigos, that was made of people with different mental diseases.

Marco’s Ego at the beginning prevented him to work with his heart with the “Los Amigos” and in the first instance he even rejected the Community Service. Unfortunately for him, the President of the Team was a close friend of the Judge that sentenced him to that position, forcing him to accept.

The gym was in a very bad shape, ball were old and also the suites of the Team Members were “vintage”. Marco learnt to understand how to extract the most value from each single player, integrating all of them in what became a TEAM and not a simple Group of people. That idea is very close to my perception of Team, like I explained also in this article (https://ecency.com/hive-168869/@mikezillo/the-qualities-of-a-leader ), inspired to the redemption of a former athlete of the team I am coaching.

They managed to purchase a bus that they used for the games away from their home gym, and all the away-games became like a school-trip for the whole team with Marco as their coach, father, teacher, psychologist

Los Amigos, under wise and humble Marco’s coaching obtained one success after the other, reaching the final game on a Island that consisted for the whole team of a great trip.

Campeones is a very heart-warming film that transmit all the values that Marco could absorb from the team members on the importance of being humble, embracing simplicity and being welcoming.

He was also the victim of several harsh jokes about him being the coach of such a team, but there he acknowledge all the human values he was absorbing.

On the other hand, also the clear signs of happiness and evolution for the team members are an important sign of how much value can be brought through sport in general.

Sport is here intended just a tool of evolution of all the involved parties and not as a simple competition. And that is so important that every coach, President and other managerial rols should understand before starting their adventure into sport.
