The Old Guard (2020): Immortal action... but without much spark.

Hello to all my armchair friends, I hope you have your appetizers ready. Today I bring you the review of the movie The Old Guard (2020). I tell you that it all started with a simple search. I wanted to see what movies were coming for 2025. And between sequels, remakes and recycled superheroes, I came across a title that caught my attention: The Old Guard 2. I thought, there is already an original and I haven't seen it. And I asked myself the big question that I think we all have asked ourselves, when we come across a sequel: Was the original so good as to try a sequel? So without thinking twice I decided to play The Old Guard, a film directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and starring Charlize Theron.
What I found was that Netflix offers us a decent action movie, with a touch of fantasy, an interesting premise and some ideas hidden between bullets and swords. And while it didn't blow my mind, it didn't leave me indifferent either.

The film follows a group of warriors who share a very particular condition. They cannot die. Or, rather, they can't die “yet”. Because part of the charm of this reality is that immortals don't know how long their immortality will last. They can survive bullets, explosions and millenary wars, but one day, without knowing how or why, they simply stop healing. Sounds a bit disturbing, doesn't it?
Andy (Charlize Theron) is the leader of the group, and she's been alive longer than she can remember. Her team consists of Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts), Joe (Marwan Kenzari) and Nicky (Luca Marinelli), all with centuries of history behind them. And an absent warrior Quynh(Veronica Ngo) is an immortal who was formerly Andy's partner. She was captured and thrown into the sea in an iron maiden, where she has been continuously drowning for centuries.
After 200 years suddenly appears a new immortal Nile (KiKi Layne), a young Marine who must assimilate his new reality.
The plot reaches its climax when the group's existence is threatened by the greed of Merrick (Harry Melling), a pharmaceutical CEO obsessed with unlocking the secret of his immortality. From there, the film moves into chase mode with well-choreographed action sequences, as Nile adjusts to his new life and the team tries to stay in the shadows.

Let's see, if I'm being honest. “The Old Guard” fulfills its role of entertaining. The action scenes are competent, Charlize Theron brings charisma to her character and manages to convey an emotional weight behind that cold, distant stare. Andy isn't just a stunning heroine, she's someone who carries centuries of self-doubt, loss and disappointment. That's a more human vision, which is appreciated. For its part, the dynamic of the group of immortals has its interesting moments.
The immortal couple Joe and Nicky, whose love story transcends time. Their relationship is one of the different points in this type of film, it is a way of inclusion without being forced, it is shown naturally, without unnecessary underlining. The idea that these warriors, despite their long existence, still find solace and connection with each other is a different way of handling the loneliness attached to their condition. Let me give you a little spoiler. In one scene Joe expresses himself in such a sublime way of what Nicky means to him, when they try to minimize him as just her boyfriend. It makes you feel, you've never been loved with that intensity.
On the other hand, the quest for the burden of immortality, while present, does not go as deep as expected. We see glimpses of Andy's weariness and possible loss of immortality, as he notices that his wounds have lost the ability to heal instantly. Or Booker's sadness and loneliness, but it stays there. You don't get to really explore the emotional weight of living for centuries watching and feeling everything around you, including your loved ones, change and disappear.

If we have to talk about a relevant weak point for me it was definitely the villain, played by Harry Melling, he is functional as an antagonist, but lacks depth, poorly developed and without being a real threat, that is, not scary at all. I think the plot could have been more interesting, if he was the type of villain that arouses, a lot of resentment towards him. His motivation is pure and simple greed, without much nuance to make him memorable.
As for the action scenes, they are well coordinated and it is appreciated that they do not resort to the visual chaos typical of many films of the genre. However, towards the second half, these scenes do not show more variety and begin to feel somewhat repetitive. They don't bore, but they don't blow us away either.
Knowing that The Old Guard 2 is on the way, I think watching the first installment is reasonable. While not an unforgettable film, it does lay out a universe that could be broader and stronger in its sequel. Its open ending leaves some loose threads that could lead to more intense conflicts, and the post-credits scene the resurrection of Quynh. It's a hooking device that I feel sparks interest in the sequel.

The old guard is not the new revolution in action movies. And let's be clear, it doesn't try to be. But it has something that many similar productions do not offer: characters with emotional weight, and a very, very, light reflection on the burden of living forever, without a clear purpose. It also reminds us how dangerous excessive ambition is, when we encounter the unknown.
If I have to give it a score I give it 6 out of 10. It's not a movie I'll remember years from now, but it's not one I'll regret having seen either. I recommend it for an afternoon when you want action with a little something extra, and why not, to set the stage for, if you're itching to see what the sequel brings.
I would like to know what you think.
Thank you very much for making it this far. Take care of yourselves.
