Hello, friends! I hope you are all doing well. I wanted to do something different, so I've been trying out different brushes in my drawing app and found one that really caught my attention because of its slightly distorted shape. You know, I like that kind of art that looks weird, where the strokes aren't perfect, smooth, or defined, so I started doing some tests to see what would come out of it.

The brush is called a cube brush and, as its name suggests, when you make a stroke, it creates a line made of cubes, small cubes, large cubes, but they are all cubes, mixed together, one on top of the other.

As for the illustration, I decided to do a portrait, as it had been a while since I had done one. I chose an actress named Fairuza Balk as my model and took the reference photo from a Pinterest account. I chose her because I really loved her performance as Nancy Down in the movie The Craft (1996). That evil witch was completely fascinating to me.

I created this illustration in stages. I did not use a sketch as such; I simply drew the shape of the face, leaving space for the eyes and mouth. Then, on a layer above, I highlighted the eyes and the shape of the nose, and then on the layer below, I began to apply the shading and highlights.

Choosing the color palette I used for this was a bit complicated because this brush has a mixture of colors and you have to know how to choose well so that they all combine with each other. I did this by trying out color after color to see which one was more or less suitable for the base, the shadows, and the highlights.

Quería hacer algo diferente, asi que estos días me puse a probar uno que otro pincel en mi app de dibujo y encontré uno que atrapó mucho mi atención, por esa forma algo distorsionada que daba, saben, me gusta ese tipo de arte que se ve raro, dónde los trazos no son perfectos, suaves o definidos, así que me puse a hacer algunas pruebas a ver qué salía de todo esto.

El pincel se llama pincel cubo y como su nombre lo indica, al realizar un trazo, crea una linea hecha de cubos, cubos pequeños, cubos grandes, pero todos son cubos, mezclados entre si, unos encima de otros.

En cuanto a la ilustración me animé a hacer un retrato, tenía tiempo que no hacía uno, escogí a una actriz que se llama Fairuza Balk como modelo, tomé la foto de referencia de una cuenta de Pinterest. La escogí a ella porqué realmente me encantó su interpretación de Nancy Down en la película The Craft (1996). Esa bruja malvada era completamente fascinante para mí.

Ok, esta ilustración la hice por partes, no usé un boceto como tal, simplemente hice la forma de la cara, dejando espacio para los ojos y la boca, luego en una capa superior, remarque los ojos y la forma de la nariz, para después en la capa de abajo comenzar a aplicar el sombreado y las luces.

Escoger la paleta de colores que usé para esto fué algo complicado, porque este pincel tiene una mezcla de colores y hay que saber escoger bien, para que puedan combinar todos entre si. Esto lo hice probando color a color y ver cuál más o menos era el adecuado para la base, para las sombras y para las luces.

Once I knew how the colors worked, I did the rest of the illustration, continuing with the neck and blouse, leaving the hair for last.

Una vez que ya sabía como funcionaba lo de los colores, hice el resto de la ilustración, así que proseguir con el cuello y la blusa, dejando de último lugar al cabello.

I should mention that at some point, I had to reduce the thickness of the brush, in cases such as the eyes, which is a fairly small area, and part of the hair, also to define the edges of the face a little.

Debo mencionar que en algún momento, tuve que bajarle al grosor del pincel, en casos tales como los ojos, que es una zona bastante pequeña y en parte del cabello, también para definír un poco los bordes del rostro.

The curious thing about this portrait is that at first glance it seems quite ordinary, but if you look closely enough you can see the hundreds of cubes that make it up, simulating techniques such as pointillism, divisionism, or perhaps a digital mosaic, a clear example of contemporary art.

Lo curioso de este retrato es que a simple vista parece algo bastante común, pero si lo acercas lo suficiente puedes notar los cientos de cubos que lo conforman, simulando así técnicas tales como el puntillismo, el divisionismo o tal vez la de un mosaico digital, una muestra clara de arte contemporáneo.
