Hey there, friends! Today I want to introduce the counterpart to my latest illustration, so I'm thrilled to share with you this pixel art of The Red Queen, the feared villain from the Alice in Wonderland universe.

To bring this illustration to life, I took inspiration from Tim Burton's 2010 version of The Red Queen, brilliantly played by the great British actress Helena Bonham Carter.

¡Hola, amigos! En esta ocasión quiero presentarles a la contraparte de mi última ilustración, por lo que es un gusto para mí compartir con ustedes este pixel art de La Reina Roja, esa temida villana del universo de Alicia en el país de las maravillas.

Para llevar a cabo esta ilustración, he tomado como referencia a la versión de La Reina Roja de la película de Tim Burton del año 2010, en la que fue interpretada por la gran actriz británica Helena Bonham Carter.

Creative Process 🎨 Proceso Creativo

This illustration shares a similar aesthetic with the previous one, as both characters belong to the same universe and feature that same Blythe doll-inspired style.

I did the sketch on a 203x203 pixel canvas. Here, I portrayed the Red Queen with her signature oversized head, sporting a tiny crown shaped like two hearts, large eyes that match her head's proportions, and heart-shaped lips. I crafted a royal gala gown, true to a queen from the Renaissance era, and just like her sister, the White Queen from my last piece, she is holding a heart in her hands.

Esta ilustración tiene una estética similar a la anterior, ya que ambos personajes son parte del mismo universo, además de compartir el mismo estilo tipo muñeca Blythe.

El boceto lo realicé en un lienzo base de 203x203 píxeles. En él he representado a la Reina Roja con su característica cabeza grande, en donde lleva una pequeña corona en forma de dos corazones, sus ojos grandes al igual que la cabeza y sus labios en forma de corazón. Creé un vestido de gala real, propio de una reina de la época renacentista, y en sus manos —al igual que su hermana, la Reina Blanca de la ilustración anterior— sostiene un corazón.

With the sketch ready, it's time to start the coloring process. This is where the real magic happens, as it allows me to bring out all the details that couldn't be captured in the initial linework.

I begin with the face by applying a light base coat and outlining the inner edges with soft shading to give the queen's face proper shape and proportion.

I use very bright, almost white highlights to achieve that signature paleness that defines the Red Queen.

Una vez con el boceto listo, procedo a dar inicio al proceso de coloreado. Es aquí donde ocurre la verdadera magia, porque es en donde agrego todos los detalles que no puedo delinear en el boceto.

Inicio con el rostro: agrego una base de color claro, delineando los bordes internos con sombras suaves que le dan proporción y forma a la cara de la reina.

Uso luces bastante claras, casi blancas, para darle esa palidez propia de la Reina Roja.

I contrast that pale skin with blue eyeshadow-style shading and the vibrant red of her heart-shaped lips.

To color the eyes, I applied a gray gradient, capturing that signature melancholy look found in Blythe dolls.

Esa palidez la contrasto con ese sombreado en tonos azules sobre sus ojos y ese rojo intenso de sus labios en forma de corazón.

Para el interior de los ojos usé un degradado de grises, dándole esa expresión melancólica propia de las muñecas Blythe.

Moving on to her hair—that unique, heart-shaped hairstyle.

I used a palette of reds for this part. I began with a base coat and then built up a pixel dithering technique to create volume and give it a fluffy, curly texture.
After that, I colored the crown on her head using gold and red tones.

Prosigo con el coloreado de su cabello, ese cabello extraño en forma de corazón.

Para ello utilizo tonos rojos. Comencé aplicando una base y luego fui añadiéndole un tramado de píxeles, con el fin de darle volumen y una textura esponjosa y rizada.
Luego pasé a colorear con tonos dorados y rojos la corona de su cabeza.

Next, I moved on to coloring the dress. I have to admit this was the most time-consuming part of the piece, as this character wears a highly detailed gown.

I used a palette of black, red, and gold. Since the black areas were already integrated during the sketching phase, I proceeded to apply a vibrant red base to the shoulders, sleeves, and skirt. Then, I added gold tones to the upper layers of the skirt and the corset.

To build volume, I started working on the base of the skirt by applying dark red shades to the edges; I did the same for the gown's layers and the corset, but using gold tones instead.

I patterned gold hearts all along the skirt and, as a final touch, I colored her gloves, the heart she holds in her hands, and a few other minor details on her dress.

Continué con el coloreado del vestido. Debo admitir que fue la parte que más trabajo me llevó hacer, ya que este personaje porta un vestido bastante detallado.

Para él utilicé negro, rojo y dorado. El color negro ya lo había integrado anteriormente dentro del boceto, por lo que continué aplicando un color rojo intenso de base en los hombros del vestido, las mangas y la falda, mientras que a las capas superiores de la falda y al corsé les agregué un color dorado.

Empecé a trabajar la base de la falda aplicando rojos oscuros en los bordes para darle volumen; también a las capas del vestido y al corsé, pero esta vez con dorado.

Estampé corazones dorados a lo largo de la falda y, por último, coloreé los guantes que lleva puestos y el corazón que sostiene en sus manos, además de colorear uno que otro detalle menor en su vestido.

For the background, I took the liberty of using the same one from the White Queen piece, featuring those heart-shaped green trees. However, I added a dark blue tone behind it this time; I couldn't leave it black, as I wanted to make sure it wouldn't wash out the dark areas of the Red Queen's dress.

Para el fondo me tomé la libertad de agregarle el mismo que a la ilustración de la Reina Blanca, con esos árboles verdes en forma de corazones, solo que a este le añadí un tono azul oscuro detrás, ya que no podía dejarlo en negro para que no opacara la parte oscura del vestido de la Reina Roja.
