Not the weekend movie. ‘No Road Back’ 1957.
This one should have gone up on Friday but mandatory day off, a religious festival and family duties stopped this from happening so here is your occasional Weekend Movie going up on a Monday afternoon instead of when it should have done.
‘No Road Back’ is a tight little British crime thriller from 1957. The plot revolves around a gang of criminals who meet up in a drinking club owned by a blind and death proprietress who is also involved in this gang. Her son, newly arrived back in the UK from the United States, is unaware of his mother’s criminal activities but the girl he loves who works for the club owner is aware and hates the criminal life that she’s been caught up in.
Warehouse theft appears to be the staple of this gang’s activities but they have their eyes on a bigger prize, a consignment of diamonds coming in from the Netherlands which will be held in the safe of a diamond merchant. It is this plan to steal the diamonds where things change for the gang, the club proprietress, the unaware son and the girl who really wants no part of the crime world.
This is obviously a ‘B’ movie destined to be a second feature at cinemas where there was once a main feature and a second movie. Despite that it’s a nice little tale of crime, suspicion and redemption. It was well worth an hour and sixteen minutes of my time.
