Hello Movie fans!

This is my entry into the CineTV contest 56, Favorite Heist Movie The link is here.

Name - Heat
Released - 1995
Director - Michael Mann

The last CineTV contest that I entered was 44 and I have been wanting to get back into them and this was the perfect one that I could not pass up on, because there is one best heist movie of all time, way ahead of all the others, and that is Heat.

We are stepping back in time though around 28 years. Where did the time go? It is hard to imagine, but this film still manages to hold its own after all this time.

It packs some serious Hollywood heavyweights with De Niro facing off against Pacino. I think it was the first time these two legends had been in a film together. De Niro famous for amongst other films but particularly Goodfellas and Pacino was brilliant in Donnie Brasco, Dog Day Afternoon and lets not forget the Godfather.

Not only that, it stars the Ice Man himself, Val Kilmer who is really cool as ice in the movie. His gambling addiction, problems with his wife and being short of cash despite his successful criminal career was played so well.

The film has multiple fascinating storylines that keep you captivated from the start to the finish. The first one is of course the rivalry between De Niro and Pacino.

This leads up to the brilliant coffee shop scene where the two protagonists face off with each other. There ensues a great dialogue between them before they go their separate ways. Although I think Pacino is brilliant, especially in this role, I was always rooting for De Niro as he was always so cool and calculated. Although now it sounds quite silly, to my immature self, I was impressed.

This storyline comes to a crescendo between them at the very end of the film, but which one will win? I won't spoil it for you in case you have not seen it, but it is a gripping battle of wits throughout the film between them.

A great thing about the film, although it portrays an exciting subject, it still manages to maintain a level of morality that crime doesn't really pay for many of the characters and that there are many life sacrifices if you go down that path, many heartbreakingly tragic. You also see how close-nit the police are, training day style but not corrupt like in that film.

There is then some cat and mouse games between the detectives and the criminals which is quite entertaining to watch which leads upto..

..the really great thing about Heat is that it has the best ever heist scene in movie history. What is so great is the tempo of the heist and the SOUND literally blows you away and gets your adrenaline running.

The moment Val Kilmer starts shooting with his automatic weapon it all kicks off with some amazing scenes in the getaway car and lets not forget about the story of the driver. There are some great moves between the bad guys as they try to get away from the cops, taking out a great many of them. I don't think I have seen such a well filmed realistic bank heist shoot out like this before and anything better since then.

The main detectives are also well played and are iconic in their roles that you don't want anything bad to happen to them. Alas with the amount of firepower unleashed in this battle, fatalities were inevitable.

What I found surprising is that the Police decided to confront them in the first place with so many innocent people around and perhaps this is what made the film feel so realistic but also so crazy with the machine gun fire on downtown streets in LA. I have never been to LA and could not say if this is a normal occurence to expect something like this, but the heist and the preceding shoot out are really memorable.

Overall, this film is the best heist film ever made, you should watch it if you haven't seen it yet.

Thanks for reading.

What a great movie!

De Niro and Pacino were in the same movie together before Heat and that was Godfather II but this was the first one they shared a scene.

I was always rooting for De Niro too and his 30-second rule. I was a bit disappointed when Pacino won the shootout. Speaking of shootouts, the one in the front of the bank when Kilmer opens fire, must be one of the greatest shootouts in Hollywood history - after The Wild Bunch ending of course. ;)

That's right, it was the first scene together, I knew it was something like that. The ending was a real twist with the shootout, but I guess they couldn't let him run off into the sunset. 😅 The shootout with Kilmer is the best shootout I think, just sneaking ahead of The Wild Bunch 😅🤣 I think a good contender for a heist movie was also The Italian Job:

Oh, man! Italian Job is great. When I saw the topic of the contest the first one that came to my mind was The Usual Suspects. Haven't seen it in ages but I remember it making a huge impact back in the day.

avatar

That is another good one for sure, gotta love Verbal!!

avatar

Yeah! Spacey was on fire back then! Not so much these days.

avatar

It's a very good movie full of suspense.

avatar

Heat is still on my need to watch , heist movies hmm oceans 11 or the italian job both the old and newer versions

avatar

Heat is worth to watch. The Italian Job films are classic, Michael Caine was always great to see.

De Niro was something else in his time... His class is incredible in movies even tho have watched some of his like godfather in 21st century still enjoyed it.

Haven't got a chance to watch this one.. sounds quite interesting and gonna add it to watch list. Awesome review, Got me convinced when I heard about cast.

avatar

Thanks, yeah De Niro was a legend back in the day, so many great movies. Although superceded by some Guy Ritchie movies in modern times, the older ones are great.

avatar

Yea, still have left many to watch later.. mostly older one's are Great. Storyline, plot, acting is something Nice.

CineTV has its own front end cinetv.blog. I always usually post there as I try to collect 1000 CINE tokens for the badge. few hundred left to go! lol

avatar

Oh are those the badges where you have on your hive profile kind of thing? I never really understood the badges in hive. are they useful in anyway or just purely for show :P

avatar

yes it is like a badge or something. there isnt any usecase for them, i just like the cinetv community. :)

avatar

I see over the bigger movie one?

avatar

i think it is a good community, but i have always posted in cinetv until now and didnt check it out. maybe i look once you have posted there!

avatar

Haha alright I see I see. No worries man I was just curious if there was any difference

avatar

Heat seems like a nice movie to watch but I rarely see movies that are from the 90's.

I like the way you aired your views and at the same time, did a review for the movie.

avatar

Thanks for checking it out. I think many movies from this era look quite dated now, but some are still good.

avatar

I agree that some are still good. I've seen some recommendations that were fire! Thanks for drawing my attention to this ✨

avatar

I dont think I've ever seen that. Sounds good, and looks good from the youtube advert - think I'll check it out - cheers !
