Name - For All Mankind
Released - 2019
Creators - Ronald D. Moore / Matt Wolpert / Ben Nedivi

After finishing watching the second series of Foundation which had a pretty great ending, I decided to continue my sci-fi fix with For All Mankind. That was a mistake! OMG!

I had no idea what the series was when I first heard about it and was not sure what to expect. However, after watching a series based on the sci-fi ideas of Asimov, it would be a hard act to follow.

<< contains spoilers >>

So the first episode started and then I could see it is one of those revisionist sci-fi programmes where they try to make a twist on what happened, I sighed. Usually these are really bad to watch in my experience. They are seem designed to try to give credibility to the given narrative that is being twisted, which makes for some really cringeworthy TV.

So here, apparently the former Soviet Union has won the race to the moon and this is a revisionist version of what happened and how NASA felt about it. Considering they already sent the monkey into space, I can't see how this would have anyway been a big deal.

The first episode is then about how (badly) the NASA team took the news and they started hating on Russia, communism etc etc. and drank alot. Many of the astronauts are feeling down and glum and not sure they can continue now they weren't the first on the moon. How could America not win the space race?!

Ironically, this show paradoies real life and you can see how glum Armstrong looks after apparently landing on the moon supposedly for real. The astronauts in For All Mankind are really hard to like and get attached to their story. They dont have an Armstrong or Buzz appeal to them.

As the first episode progressed, my bordom level starting reaching danger levels and it was like watching paint dry a real Nasa rocket launch which is excruciatingly boring.

This was parodied in the Simpsons episode where they desperately try to change the channel from another boring space launch:

I found myself skimming through the episode to see if anything interesting would happen. It didn't. I then skimmed through some further episodes and the storylines looked even more boring than the first episode which takes some doing.

It is a shame, because there are some far more interesting storylines they could have pursued than this which just didn't work for me.

One of my favorite Nasa movies is the classic Capricorn One starring some Hollywood heavyweights like OJ Simpson and Elliott Gould who have a great storyline about Nasa faking the mars landing.

After watching this, I needed to go back and watch an episode of Buck Rogers to regain my sanity and feel better again. Luckily there are some more sci-fi shows on Apple TV and I am checking out Infiltration now.

Thanks for reading.

I had read some not so great things about that show, so I was hesitant to actually start watching it. Instead, I decided to watch Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and it has been great. I remember watching the old Godzilla movies as a kid, but I haven't really watched any of the newer ones. This show is quite good. There is a timeline if you want to watch the show in order along with the movies, but stand alone it has been easy to follow. I've only needed to do some light Googling.

Yeah, it seems the things you hear LD were true. It is really dull. The Monarch show looks good, I might give it a watch next time. Lots of good stuff to watch at the moment , no time for garbage like For All Mankind.

Oh looks like someone got really disappointed ☹️
No worries, there are many interesting and similar shows. I can suggest you one (animated it is and I watched it when I was in 8th grade). But believe me it was so interesting

Thanks man. I will give it a look..was a shame about this one.

avatar

Yeah sure. I would love to hear the feedback 😃

I ordered the 5 day-free Apple TV+ abo just to see Foundation. Glad I cancelled the prolongation in time :)

avatar

Yeah there isn't enough on there to subscribe. Foundation was good though, it started getting interesting the most at end of season 2.

avatar

I'll stick with The Simpsons, it sounds like that was one really bad show you were watching!

avatar

Yeah, it was pretty bad. The Simpsons are a much better choice.

Sorry about the disappointment
I’m sore there will be other shows that you can watch and you’d be satisfied by their performances

avatar

Thanks for the candid review, I viewed the trailer but didn't get quite hooked on it. I definitely agree that they were better storylines to explore than the one they chose.

avatar

Thanks, yeah, I think the trailer doesn't sell the series too much. I don't like to drop something when I start, but it was a must do this time.

avatar

Same here too! I like finishing what I start but I guess sometimes, dropping it makes much more sense than finishing it.

avatar

Oh, I haven't seen it yet when I heard about it I planned to watched. But after hearing your opinion, now I am heartbroken

avatar

Oh I hope I didn't put you off to much. Maybe check out the first episode and see if you like it.

avatar

According to your opinion, it was not so good. But still I will definitely give feedback after watching its first episode

avatar

Nor I was in the know of this serial, neither planned to watch it, but still. Now I definitely not gonna watch it!

NASA team took the news and they started hating on Russia, communism etc etc. and drank alot.

😝

"watching paint dry" - oh, a nice vocabulary, I am taking it.

You also mentioned 'Foundation' serial. I did not watch it either, but have read the source books like 3 times (a long ago, back in 90-es). And quite recently, I stumbled at a little critical review for said serial, and obtained some opinion without examining the actual stuff. I took it so, that producers were able to create a very nice looking picture, with effects, visuals, etc. But. Scenarists produced some pretty usual sh....t.

I clearly remember that Asimov created this cycle being under the impression of reading a classical studies about the fall of the Roman Empire, the flavor of that story is almost the main thing in his book. The second important, key feature is this new science invented by Seldon. What have remained of his 'science' in this serial? Ha! Actually, nothing. Just guesses and brilliant insights, foresights etc. Also called as 'magic'. Sci-fi series "Foundation" lol... guess which one word is the odd one out?

avatar

Those are really good points and I think the criticism is very well founded, especially with the lack of depth for the "Science", especially the cube which they tap 3 times to open 😅. However, there are some really great scenes and ideas of Asimov pursued that make the film enjoyable, although not covered as well as you might expect in a book by Asimov himself, you can still appreciate some of the thought-provoking ideas and enjoy the visualisation of some of them. The robotics part and AI are really thought provoking.

Real life parody - do you think Georges Lemaître had any inspiration from Asimov?
A Roman Catholic Priest created the theory of the expansion of the universe & created the big bang theory! What did the teach him at the Vatican! haha

avatar

Well, I am still intrested to examine the 'Foundation' serial - it just moved to the far shelf of the closet... maybe, some day, when I'd want to feed my mind with some space opera. 🙃
No idea about Georges Lemaître 's inspiration sources.

Well, as a sci-fi fan I can say that I don't like this For all mankind. Something missing there, for me to enjoy the story.
Btw: I don't finished yet The Foundation second season. I have two episodes more to watch. I read complete Asimov's saga about Foundation, robots and Empire, the ecranisation is different, but I like it.

avatar

Yeah, it is really missing something. The last episodes of Foundation are pretty good. I can't wait for season 3.
