Name - Snowpiercer
Released - 2013
Director - Bong Joon-ho

It was recommended to me in the comments of one of my previous posts and I got round to finish watching the movie yesterday on Netflix. I've also started watching the newer Netflix series too, which I will give my verdict on another post, however, back to the film. I didn't know what to expect, it is classified as a post-apocalyptic movie and it also seemed to be a bit of a hack-n-slash movie at times ala Kill Bill. However, I really love the genre! The post apocalyptic thrillers are pretty in rage at the moment and I think this film rates right up there with some great action.

It has quite an interesting apocalyptic twist to this one, not in the soylent green style or zombification of the world through a virus, but the climate change theme here, which is all the rage at the moment. Quite funnily, up steps the hockey stick scientists with a cure and cause an ice age which is pretty cool. You get some cool shots of the supposed cloud seeding that is going on and yeah, I do wonder if they wanted to admit to so much in a film. How much of the weather manipulation is really science fiction? Who knows.

The film gets even more interesting as you see the awesome train and like a typical episode of Downtown Abbey, the people are falling into their ranks according to their class or wealth. The film has some really cool ideas that it explores with many cool characters.

There are some top stars in the film like Ed Harris, John Hurt and Tilda Swinton who is brilliant in most things she does. Most give stellar performances. I was really surprised to see people living so well considering they are on a train non-stop and don't go outside. It reminds me of the covid times and not going out very much.

I really liked that the train travels around the world in 1 year, travelling the different parts of the world and people can see some different views but only once each year. I was thinking how they might be able to deal with any leaves or things on the tracks and who might do the maintenance.

The film did not have any dull moments for me, either you were seeing an interesting new part of the train or there was a great fighting action scene. This leads onto one of my favorite scenes in the film where the train is going around a bend and (albeit unrealistically), the good and bad guys have a shoot out against each other!

I generally like these post-apocalyptic films, so for me it was quite an enjoyable plot and a different twist to the usual fayre in this genre. I have now started the new netflix TV series and am interested to see how this compares to the film. It seems to go in a different direction and I really face-palmed the first episode so far as it reminds me of Ice-T in Law & Order, but on a train LOL. I hope it gets better.

Anyway, thanks for reading.

I have not watched the TV show but have watched the movie which had an interesting and unique concept.

I think the film is pretty much top notch, defo worth a watch. The verdict is still out on the series yet.

avatar

The series has Jennifer Connely and my favourite actor ever Sean Bean in it so I might watch it for Bean who knows but heard he plays an important role but shows him self for low periods of times sadly.

avatar

The movie is cool, saw s1 of the series and lost interest in next season..

avatar

Oh no, thats not a good sign for the series then. I was hoping for a bit more, perhaps I should have watched before the film which was cool.

I watched the film and I still found it quite acceptable for a post-apocalyptic story. The series was made later, I think, but I didn't watch it.

avatar

Yeah the series is more recent and looks ok initially, but not sure much unser the hood so far.

avatar

That film gave me the heeby jeepys. The ending was interesting. Did you watch Dune yet? I really loved those films.

avatar

Yeah, the ending was pretty cool, I was sad.to see the train that way though. I hope it gets repaired.

I've watched Dune and really liked it so far, gotta watch part 2.

avatar

Watched Part 2 last night and it was epic.

avatar

Nice one, I gotta catch it at the weekend then. Do you like it better than the original?

avatar

yeah the fact thst the characters were developed they could add in alot more

avatar

I've actually never seen the show or the movie, but I know of it. I just started watching Then Gentlemen and it has been great so far!

avatar

I can certainly recommend the film so far. Not seen enough of the series yet. I didn't hear of Then Gentlemen, do you make a post about it soon?

avatar

I'm not sure, I am only one episode in so far because I think my wife is going to want to watch it. Sorry, it's The Gentlemen. I typo'd last night!

avatar

I watched this movie from the beginning but then I decided to watch it in my spare time. Well I think this movie is good and worth watching

avatar

I agree, it really is worth watching. I might read the book too.

avatar

maybe ill watch this O.O. might be watching the kingkong godzilla thing next week.

avatar

Wait there's a movie of Snowpiercer... I've watched all the seasons of series and have no idea it even exist.

Trailer looks exact same thing as series but different characters.. It's one of my favorite survival show, been waiting for next season.. going to watch it!!

avatar

It's pretty good and definitely worth watching if you liked the series. Maybe more action and hard core!

avatar

apocalyptic

At first, I googled this term and then got to know that "something is is total destruction".
Well, I got to know a new genre and word.

Climate change

I should say "wow" because it's movie of recent issue. You raised a very legitimate question that weather manipulation is science fiction?
I think to get answer I should watch this movie.
Ahhh, I am crazy as I have added so many movies in my list but always remain entangled in course studies.

avatar

Good to share this new genre with you. Many of these films are fear porn, but they can be quite entertaining still. 😉

avatar

Wow - I didnt realise there was a movie of this. I've watched all of the TV series, and thought it was great (Sean Bean was brilliant in it). I'll have to look out for this.

avatar

I didn't realise he was in the tv series, I've only seen the first episode. Will keep watching now, Sean Bean is great.

avatar

I must be the one who recommended this movie to you. I'll be sorry if I'm not. It was one of my favorite movies. I thought the scene where the woman puts a shoe on the man's head was impressive. Glad you liked it man

avatar

Thanks for the recommendation. The shoe scene is quite ironic. I thought the guy was very calm about losing his arm. Travelling on a train can be nice for short journeys, but they are hard when longer, especially those overNight ones. I was thinking to do the trans Siberian, but so long on a train puts me off a little. Lol.
