Name - Squid Game
Released - 2021
Director- Hwang Dong-hyuk

It has taken me a little while, but I finally got around to watching Squid Game on Netflix and I remember the media hype about it at the time and I have to say it lived up to it. It has been one of the best shows I have watched in a long time.

I was really not sure what to expect as usually hyped shows disappoint, but this one I thought was really good for many reasons.

What might at first seem mindless depravity, had actually some good moral lessons to learn in the show and I thought that was really well done.

I cannot watch dubbed shows, so it was also cool to watch in the original language with subtitles This made the show more authentic and you could appreciate it still, even with subtitles.

The show starts of slow as we get to know our main protagonists and you see the dire life situations they have got themselves into. This leads onto one of the first games which was a bit of a shocker if you hadn't heard about it before.

Alok - Let's Play - source

This is the pretty famous game Red Light, Green Light that you can see became quite iconic. The tune by Alok was also pretty cool made with the sample from the game.

The idea of the games was pretty cool and how they had some tragic twists in them was also at times heartbreaking. You even felt at times attached to some of the bad guys being forced to play the game.

However, as the game progresses, you soon quickly realise that the real things to value in life are not inate objects like money, but the people and relationships. Although, a hard situation to be in, the husband and wife team in the marble game was the high point of not believability as why would both join if only 1 could win?!

The super-rich being bored and looking for games is nothing new in film, but it was really well done here and somehow parodied the real world. The sets and use of colors and uniforms were really well done.

The best scene for me was probably the glass bridge game which was just horrific to how they thought of that and how it could work out.

It was also great TV, some of the twists at the end and the bonding of some characters. You could really imagine how you might be in the same situation, but hopefully wouldn't find yourself.

So far there it looks like there will be a season 2 and I will be looking forward to watching it, if the first season was anything to go by.

Have you seen Squid Game?

Thanks for reading.

Agree, it was great, surprised me too :)) And also watched it in the original language and I forgot about it, it was so good :))

I have seen this season and due to this one I Searched for others like this. I really loved this series.

My fav game was that (I can't exactly remember) in which they had to collect some pebbles or I think some small glass balls in bags (I watched it long ago).

I watched a similar season named Alice in the borderlands if you liked this one then you are definitely going to love it.

avatar

Yeah, the marbles game was a really hard one. Thanks for the recommendation , I will check it out.

I quite enjoyed Squid Game. On the whole it was pretty good, but I was sort of surprised about the plot line about the policeman looking for his brother, which sort of fizzled out. Maybe it'll get picked up in season 2 - cant wait for that !

Yeah, I was wondering how he managed to survive so long unnoticed! Lol

avatar

I never got around to watching Squid Game. It just never felt like something that appealed to me. Plus I still have a backlog of stuff to watch, so I am not sure where I would ever fit it in!

avatar

Hopefully you will find time, it's pretty good..agree loads of good stuff to watch right now though.

avatar

Woah you're late lol I watched this when it was out. If you're into Korean series I can share you more 🥳

avatar

I havent seen it yet but it was so popular that if Im not mistaken they coming up with a few more shows about it, my wife did mention she like it although she likes a lot of Korean tv shows, she is more related to Asian culture more than me even though we are not from Asia, I do plan to watch it, in fact we both have agree to watch more tv series and movies together on weekends now that our kids are growing we are starting to have more time together so Squid Games is on queue for me

avatar

Yeah a new series is coming soon and I am wondering how it will go. They have made a great show here.

avatar

I think I'm too old for that. My children watched it and were fascinated. I am not in any way horrified by it, but rather I think it is the height of madness of what television can offer to an audience that is demanding more and more. On the one hand, stupid reality shows have saved the survival of a medium like television, and on the other hand, completely crazy scenarios of the impossible just to keep attention. Yes, the Koreans are good at that.

Yeah I know what you mean, more and more to get your attention. I thought it might not be so Interesting, but it actually surprised me and was not so crazy as you might think.

Haven't got around to it yet, I'll have to make sure to put it on the list. There's just so much good stuff to watch and so little time...
!BBH

avatar

Yeah there is lots of good stuff on at the moment, but it's a good one.

avatar

Should I be ashamed of myself that I still haven't seen this show? Maybe yes. I want to watch it sometime because for a long time all the people talked about it and I'm sure it's good.

avatar

I was feeling the same and finally watched it and couldn't stop. It's really good and great ending!

avatar

Now you've made me even more curious. I'd better start watching as soon as possible 😅

avatar

yes I've seen it. it was a good movie. i think season 2 was already released but it is not the same as the season 1. season 2 is more like a realty tv show.

avatar

It was a Good show... I still remember the hype it had back then.. imo it's a bit overrated. Especially when squid game got Emmys instead of better call Saul..

avatar

Better Call Saul was another great show, it would be hard to choose the best one from the 2.

avatar

Yea, tho both fits in like different genre.. I like BSC more.

Waiting for squid game season 2. Seems like we'll see it this year.

avatar

There was a time... in the past, when I was fond of Korean movies (Kim Ki Duk and Wong Kar Way, to name the names; I even was a fan). But I was really scary to approach this one, haha. Did not see it and do not plan.

I was thinking that it would be not good, but was pleasantly surprised, although still too much blood often.

avatar

I watched this series a few months ago and really liked it because it brought originality and I enjoyed watching it.
They also made a game on Netflix with real people inspired by the movie and without blood and just simulated killings. I recommend you watch that one too, I also liked this real-life game show

I think you are right, it was a very refreshing originality to the show from all the usual reality type programmes.

Thanks for the tip, I will check that out about the simulated show. 😅👌

avatar

That’s one of the monsters interesting movies I have ever watched in my life but the only reason I don’t like it because they were just killing people anyhow.
What kind of games were those ones? Any little mistake then you die!

avatar

They are playing many simple childhood games and then if you lose, you die. It is pretty harsh.

avatar

I've only watched a couple of episodes and it was better than I expected it to be. The plot and the stories were really interesting and they have a knack of getting the viewer to resonate with the characters.

avatar

That's true, the character build ups and relationships were really well done.

avatar

I first heard about it I think some two years ago or so when it was used in a soccer meme, but I ever bothered to check it out, but maybe now I will because of your review. Thanks for bringing it to our attention and have a great day.

avatar

Thanks, I hope you will enjoy it. I was also unsure to check it out, but am really glad I did.

avatar

It's a nice TV show, but the ending of the season is very disappointing.

avatar

I thought it wasnt so bad, but I know what you mean, they could have made it a little cooler.

avatar

I instantly knew that I wanted to watch this after seeing the first trailer on Youtube way back and I loved the show now looking forward to what they will do with Season 2. However, I loved both Alice in Borderland seasons even more which is a similar type show.

avatar

I am also keen to see where they take it for season 2. I wonder what the red hair thing means! lol

I didnt see Alice in Borderland yet, but now it is on my watchlist.

avatar

If you enjoyed Squid Game, you will love Alice in Borderland. It's 2 seasons with a finished story that makes sense in the end. Season 1 starts out great, had somewhat of a dip after the middle as the setting changes a bit but it gets better again at the end of the season. I loved the 2nd season even more than the 1st and often had a smile on my face for ho inventive and fun some of the games were.

I just watched the trailer of season 1 but it doesn't do the series justice as it avoids giving anything away. I have no clue why Squid Game got so insanely popular while Alice In Borderland mostly was overlooked never getting any hype. I would love to be in a position where I had not watched it yet so I could enjoy the ride from scratch. Highly Recommended!

avatar

That sounds pretty cool. It is next on my to watch list, hopefully will grab a few episodes later. There are some great shows on lately which is cool, especially at this time of year.
