[EN/ES] Film Review: The Starling Girl 🎬 | How dangerous can religious fanaticism be?

Hello friends of the Movies & Tv community, I hope you are well. I recently saw the movie The Starling Girl directed by Laurel Parmet and released in the year 2023, a story of drama and forbidden romance in the midst of the complicated issue of belonging to a religion. I was expecting a good story but it stood out mainly because it was much more intense than I thought and also the actors were amazing in playing a forbidden relationship because of religion and age difference.

The plot takes place in the Kentucky town where the Starling's live, a family very attached to religion and that although it seems on the outside very devout has its imperfections like any other family, only in the case of the Starling's they pretend to be the most perfect and decent in town and that is where the main story of the oldest of the Starling's, Jem (Eliza Scanlen) who is a seventeen year old girl is very sure she wants to follow the path of good and what God has destined for her until she meets the desire in person comes in: young pastor Owen (Lewis Pullman).

For a young woman like Jem it is important to know how to take care of what is most precious to her, which is her bond with God, but that does not prevent her from having doubts about what she needs, wants or desires for her future. When Jem meets Owen begins a kind of game in which it is not possible for her to repress the desire to want to be with him even though many times she prays to God to take away those emotions that make her feel attracted to Owen, however, everything is gradually escalating until they begin to have a kind of relationship hidden from everyone and fearing to be discovered.

The theme of religion is very clear in this film, beyond leading people to live in a way in which they do not harm themselves or others and where they can exist, they end up being fanatics of religion and feeling a tremendous guilt for any action they wish to perform. In Jem's case she was experiencing what it was like to be attracted to and in love with a man who despite not being her age and making the mistake of allowing her to get close to him, kept getting close and it was hard for both of them to say no to what they felt.

The family environment was also very destroyed, Jem's father seemed to have some kind of addiction to alcohol and other substances and although Jem's mother tried to pretend that it was nothing serious, we can see the deterioration of his father who later tells that basically his life was frustrated by not following the world of music that he loved so much and fight for that dream, plus the death of a close friend made everything worse. And Jem's mom also seemed to have problems because she was on some medications that they never mentioned what they were for but give a hint that they could be for anxiety or mental health.

It is a movie that shows how being in a religion can lead you to have contradictory ideas with what you really want to be as a person, beyond worshiping God I think if we seek to do good and not live a life that we regret is the best way to make God feel happy and at the same time have a better relationship with him. It is not necessary to be part of a religion to be a decent person, however we see so many cases where the cruelest people hide behind religion to commit horrible acts.

This movie is very entertaining and invites you to think about what you would have done if you were Jem, how much you would allow others through religion to tell you what is right and wrong. I really liked the chemistry and acting of Lewis and Eliza, they both made the story feel very real and the drama in their relationship felt beyond the screen. If you have some time you can't miss this movie that is not so well known and really worth seeing, see you soon ☺️.

Hola amigos de la comunidad de Movies & Tv, espero se encuentren bien. Hace poco ví la película The Starling Girl dirigida por Laurel Parmet y estrenada en el año 2023, una historia de drama y romance prohibido en medio del tema tan complicado como lo es pertenecer a una religión. Esperaba una historia buena pero se destacó sobre todo porque fue mucho más intensa de lo que pensé y además los actores fueron increíbles en interpretar una relación prohibida por la religión y la diferencia de edad.

La trama se desarrolla en el pueblo de Kentucky donde viven los Starling, una familia muy apegada a la religión y que aunque parece por fuera muy devota tiene sus imperfecciones como cualquier otra familia, solo que en el caso de los Starling ellos fingen que son los más perfectos y decentes del pueblo y es ahí donde entra la historia principal de la más grande de los Starling, Jem (Eliza Scanlen) quien es una joven de diecisiete años tiene muy seguro que desea seguir el camino del bien y lo que Dios tenga destinado para ella hasta que se encuentra con el deseo en persona: el joven pastor Owen (Lewis Pullman).

Para una joven con Jem es importante saber cuidar de lo más preciado que es su lazo con Dios pero eso no evita que como cualquier joven se encuentre teniendo dudas sobre lo que necesita, desea o quisiera para su futuro. Cuando Jem se encuentra con Owen empieza una especie de juego en el que no es posible para ella reprimir el deseo de querer estar con él a pesar de que muchas veces ora a Dios para que le quite esas emociones que la hacen sentirse atraída por Owen, sin embargo, todo va poco a poco escalando hasta que empiezan a tener una especie de relación a escondidas de todos y con temor a ser descubiertos.

El tema de la religión es muy claro en esta película, más allá de llevar a las personas a vivir de una forma en la que no se hagan daño a si mismos ni a los demás y dónde puedan existir, terminan siendo fanáticos de la religión y sintiendo una culpa tremenda por cualquier acción que desean realizar. En el caso de Jem estaba experimentando lo que era sentirse atraída y enamorada por un hombre que a pesar de no tener su edad y cometer el error de permitir que ella se le acercara, mantuvo el acercamiento y fue complicado para ambos poder decir que no a lo que sentían.

El entorno familiar también estaba muy destruido, el padre de Jem parecía tener una especie de adicción al alcohol y a otras sustancias y aunque la madre de Jem intentaba aparentar que no era nada serio, podemos ver el deterioro de su padre quien más adelante cuenta que básicamente su vida fue frustrada al no seguir el mundo de la música que tanto amaba y luchar por ese sueño, además la muerte de un amigo cercano hizo que todo empeorara. Y la mamá de Jem también parecia tener problemas debido a que consumía unos medicamentos que nunca mencionaron para que eran pero dan una insinuación de que podrían ser para la ansiedad o la salud mental.

Es una película que muestra cómo el estar en una religión te puede llevar a tener ideas contradictorias con lo que realmente deseas ser como persona, más allá de adorar a Dios pienso que si buscamos hacer el bien y no vivir una vida de la cual nos arrepintamos es la mejor forma de hacer que Dios se sienta feliz y a la vez tener una mejor relación con él. No es necesario ser parte de una religión para ser una persona decente, sin embargo se ven tantos casos donde las personas más crueles se escudan a través de la religión para cometer actos horribles.

Está película es muy entretenida y te invita a pensar en que hubieras hecho si fueras Jem, en qué tanto permitirias que otros a través de una religión te digan lo que está bien y lo que no. Me gustó mucho la química y la actuación de Lewis y Eliza, ambos hicieron que la historia se sintiera muy real y que el drama en su relación se sintiera más allá de la pantalla. Si tienen un tiempo no se pueden perder de ver está película que no es tan conocida y que realmente vale la pena verla, nos vemos pronto ☺️.
