[ESP-ENG] Film Review: Sun Choke (2015) - A very disturbing psychological thriller.
Hola amigos de la comunidad de Movies & Tv, el día de hoy me puse a revisar mi cuenta de Letterboxd para ver las películas que tengo pendientes por ver y me llamo la atención una en particular por la trama psicológica.La película "Sun Choke", dirigida por Ben Cresciman, ofrece una trama psicológica intensa que queda marcada en la mente del espectador. Con una historia llena de giros y eventos desconcertantes, se adentra en la mente de la protagonista de una manera perturbadora. Es algo diferente de lo que suelo ver y en este post me gustaría contarles mi opinión sobre esta película no tan conocida del año 2015.
Hello friends of the Movies & Tv community, today I started to check my Letterboxd account to see the movies I have pending to watch and one in particular caught my attention because of its psychological plot. With a story full of twists and puzzling events, it delves into the mind of the protagonist in a disturbing way. It is something different from what I usually watch and in this post I would like to tell you my opinion about this not so well known movie from 2015.

La trama sigue a Janie, interpretada por la talentosa actriz Sarah Hagan, quien sufre de una enfermedad mental no especificada. Janie vive encerrada en una casa, bajo el cuidado de Irma (interpretada por la actriz Barbara Crampton), una mujer autoritaria y dominante. A medida que avanza la trama, nos damos cuenta de que Janie está siendo sometida a un intenso régimen de terapias alternativas, que incluyen rituales extraños y una vigilancia constante. Cuando nos adentramos en la mente de Janie, experimentamos su realidad distorsionada y su lucha interna. La película utiliza una mezcla de imágenes crudas y secuencias oníricas para representar la confusión mental de Janie. The plot follows Janie, played by the talented actress Sarah Hagan, who suffers from an unspecified mental illness. Janie lives locked up in a house, under the care of Irma (played by actress Barbara Crampton), an overbearing and domineering woman. As the plot progresses, we learn that Janie is being subjected to an intense regimen of alternative therapies, including bizarre rituals and constant surveillance. As we delve into Janie's mind, we experience her distorted reality and her internal struggle. The film uses a mix of raw imagery and dreamlike sequences to depict Janie's mental turmoil. These scenes can sometimes be uncomfortable, but they are effective in conveying the psychological state of the protagonist.
A lo largo de la película, se puede sentir una intensa tensión y una creciente rabia subyacente en la trama. A medida que Janie se enfrenta a sus demonios internos, el espectador también se ve empujado hacia los límites de su propia comodidad. Sin embargo, esta rabia y frustración no siempre se traducen en un clímax o una resolución satisfactoria, lo que puede dejar a algunos espectadores deseando más cierre y catarsis. Throughout the film, one can feel an intense tension and a growing rage underlying the plot. As Janie confronts her inner demons, the viewer is also pushed to the limits of her own comfort. However, this rage and frustration does not always translate into a climax or a satisfying resolution, which may leave some viewers wishing for more closure and catharsis. However, despite the intriguing psychological plot and focus on Janie's mind, the film left a few loose ends. While I personally appreciate a film that challenges the viewer, there were times in "Sun Choke" when I was frustrated by the lack of clarity in certain aspects of the plot. There were unanswered questions and poorly explained details, which made the overall experience not as satisfying as I had hoped.

"Sun Choke" es una película de thriller psicológico que explora la mente de su protagonista de una manera inquietante. Esta película me resultó interesante, aunque considero que hubo muchos aspectos que quedaron sin resolver. Se entiende que la protagonista sufre de un severo problema de salud mental, habiendo experimentado en algún momento un brote psicótico en el que perdió el control. Como consecuencia, ha pasado gran parte de su vida encerrada en su casa, convirtiéndose en una especie de ratón de laboratorio para Irma, la mujer que se ha encargado de su cuidado. Irma asegura que la protagonista no podrá estar bien si no sigue el tratamiento que ella le impone. Sin embargo, a medida que avanza la trama, nos damos cuenta de que estos tratamientos se alejan de lo que un experto en salud mental recomendaría y causan un malestar excesivo en nuestra protagonista. A pesar de ello, ella confía en que si sigue el tratamiento podrá alcanzar una vida normal y rehacerse, pero Irma, que también tiene problemas mentales, no tiene intención de permitirle la libertad que tanto desea.
"Sun Choke" is a psychological thriller film that explores the mind of its protagonist in a disturbing way. I found this film interesting, although I felt that there were many aspects left unresolved. It is understood that the protagonist suffers from a severe mental health problem, having at some point experienced a psychotic break in which she lost control. As a result, she has spent much of her life locked up in her home, becoming a sort of laboratory mouse for Irma, the woman who has taken over her care. Irma assures the protagonist that she cannot be well if she does not follow the treatment she imposes on her. However, as the plot progresses, we realize that these treatments are far from what a mental health expert would recommend and cause excessive discomfort in our protagonist. Despite this, she is confident that if she follows the treatment she will be able to achieve a normal life and rebuild herself, but Irma, who also has mental problems, has no intention of allowing her the freedom she so desires.
Existen escenas en la película que presentan vacíos en la trama, dando la impresión de estar viendo un caso presentado en un programa de televisión. No obstante, también hay escenas llenas de acción y mucha violencia, las cuales resultaron bastante incómodas para muchos de los espectadores. A pesar de eso, considero que algunas de estas escenas eran necesarias, aunque otras no tanto. Esperaba ver esta película por su temática relacionada con la psicología y cómo funciona la mente de una persona con una enfermedad mental, sin embargo, el tratamiento del tema dista de ser el adecuado y la protagonista se ve sometida a situaciones forzadas y exageradas. En mi opinión, le daría a esta película dos estrellas y media sobre cinco, ya que el final resultó bastante abrupto y se quedó con muchas cosas por explicar en cuanto a la historia y los problemas mentales de la protagonista. No recomendaría esta película a menores de edad ni a personas sensibles, ya que contiene escenas explícitas de sangre, violencia y contenido sexual.
There are scenes in the film that present gaps in the plot, giving the impression of watching a case presented on a television show. However, there are also scenes full of action and a lot of violence, which were quite uncomfortable for many viewers. Despite that, I felt that some of these scenes were necessary, although others not so much. I expected to see this film because of its subject matter related to psychology and how the mind of a person with a mental illness works, however, the treatment of the subject is far from adequate and the protagonist is subjected to forced and exaggerated situations. In my opinion, I would give this film two and a half stars out of five, as the ending was rather abrupt and left a lot of things unexplained in terms of the story and the mental problems of the protagonist. I would not recommend this movie to minors or sensitive people, as it contains explicit scenes of blood, violence and sexual content.
