Film Review: Big World | The young man who defied all expectations regarding his disability 🎬 - El joven que desafió todo pronóstico de discapacidad 🥹 [ENG/ESP]

Hello fellow cinephile friends from Hive! It had been days since I last shared anything with the movies and series community, where I enjoy reading so much and showcasing all those films or series that I like or that catch my attention. Due to university matters and how busy I’ve been with homework and assignments that I've been given to bring to class, I hadn't been able to sit down and watch a movie. My mom told me about the story of Big World, an Asian film that carried a great message about people with disabilities, and the story of the actor who portrays a young disabled man and how he immersed himself in the role of someone who suffers in different ways, doing it in the best possible way. That is why I want to share my review of Big World, or in Spanish, Mi pequeño yo. 🥹

The plot tells us the story of a young man named Liu Chunhe, who suffers from a motor disability that makes it very difficult for him to lead a life like a normal young person. He is in his twenties and requires the help of his family, most of which he receives from his maternal grandmother, who is the person always by his side and who pushes him to do the things that either he or his mother are afraid of. I think this is very important for someone suffering from a condition, since feeling valued and knowing they can perform different activities—even if at a different pace than a healthy person—allows Liu Chunhe to open up and learn different things about life. Above all, it helps him learn about the world around him, about the things a normal adult usually does like working, studying, meeting people his age, and also learning what it feels like to experience love, happiness, and pride in his own abilities, which are many, even if it seems like he doesn't have them or if he himself believes he cannot achieve certain challenges in life.

Big World is a story of drama but also of overcoming obstacles. Liu Chunhe lives in a world where physical limitations prevent him from doing so many things that he, as a young person, would want to do. He has fears just like any human being and also suffers when seeing the contempt or discouragement of others towards him. He is someone with a lot of potential but was labeled as a non-functional person—something he heard throughout his life, especially from his mother. This made him more withdrawn, more afraid of the world, and made him feel a bit useless and also guilty for being born with a condition that affects not only him but his family as well, by not being able to fully fend for himself.

This story was directed by filmmaker Yang Lina, who captured the attention of actor Jackson Yee, a promising young talent who decided to take on this challenge of playing a quite complicated character. This is especially true because the actor, being a healthy person, had to learn how to walk, talk, express himself, and move like someone with a severe motor disability. Well, I heard that he won several awards for his excellent performance of the character, and it is no wonder; it was incredible the way he stepped into Liu Chunhe's shoes and how he developed a young man with a disability in a respectful way, yet deeply tied to the reality of people with this type of disability. He truly is a prodigy actor who is worth keeping an eye on in more movies or series, because he has so much to offer regarding his love for the characters he has been given.

In the story, which belongs to the drama genre—a genre I tend to watch quite often because I like to see different realities than the ones I perhaps perceive in my day-to-day life, but which always leave me with some reflection for my own life—you can see that it portrays a story that can be very common. People with disabilities are often hidden, brushed aside, marginalized, and even forgotten by the people who should care for them, such as their family. In Liu Chunhe's case, his mother was a woman who always carried the weight of the label of having a disabled son, and how this had changed her life forever. The mother's character is shown in many ways as very lacking in empathy, but as we approach the end, a scene provides more of an explanation about what she truly feels and the reasons why she behaves that way, which are often deeply rooted in her own fears.

As for the movie, it is a story that can help many people see that these types of realities exist, that there are people with different disabilities, but this does not mean they are completely limited from doing things. In fact, as the movie progresses, with his grandmother's help, Liu Chunhe starts setting aside his fears and prejudices a bit, and tries to do things that can change his life, such as looking for a job, meeting new people, and not always staying inside his own world. I think this helps people with a disability a lot; having the support of someone who believes in you and pushes you forward is extremely important for anyone, with or without a disability.

It is a tough story to watch, but it really is something that motivates you to find reasons to keep going, to take into account those people who may have difficulties and yet still have the will to want to get ahead, to want to improve their lives, and not to think that because they have a disability they are limited or won't be able to have a life like any other human being. Often, the strongest disability is the one in our minds, when we place limitations on ourselves and believe we won't be able to achieve our goals despite having all our senses and our motor skills in perfect condition. This story leaves you with a lot to reflect on, and if you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it; you will definitely not walk away with the same mindset after finishing it. 🫶🏼

Hola amigos cinéfilos de Hive, tenía días sin compartir nada para la comunidad de series y películas donde tanto disfruto de leer y mostrar todas aquellas películas o series que me gustan o que me llaman la atención. Por cuestiones de la universidad y lo mucho que he estado haciendo deberes y cosas que me han mandado para llevar a las clases, no había podido sentarme a ver una película. Mi mamá me comentó de la historia de Big World una pelicula asiática que tenía un gran mensaje sobre las personas con discapacidad y la historia del actor que representa a un joven discapacitado y como se metió en el papel de alguien que sufre de diferentes maneras, haciéndolo de la mejor manera posible. Es por ello, que quiero compartir mi reseña de Big World o en español Mi pequeño yo. 🥹

La trama nos cuenta la historia de un joven llamado Liu Chunhe, quien padece de una discapacidad motora que le hace muy díficil llevar una vida como un joven normal. Esta en sus veintes y requiere de la ayuda de su familia, más que todo la recibe de su abuela materna, quien es la persona que siempre está con él y que lo impulsa a hacer las cosas que a él o a la madre de el le dan miedo, pero que me parece es muy importante para alguien que sufre una condición, ya que sentirse valorado y que puede realizar diferentes actividades con tiempos diferentes a una persona saludable, hace que Liu Chunhe vaya soltandose y aprendiendo diferentes cosas de la vida, sobre todo del mundo que lo rodea, de las cosas que un adulto normal suele hacer como trabajar, estudiar, conocer a personas de su edad y también aprender lo que es sentir amor, felicidad y orgullo por sus propias capacidades que son muchas aunque parezca que no las tiene o que el mismo crea que no puede lograr ciertos retos de la vida.

Big World es una historia de drama pero también de superación, Liu Chunhe vive en un mundo donde las limitaciones físicas le impiden realizar tantas cosas que como alguien joven quisiera hacer. Tiene miedos como cualquier ser humano y también sufre al ver el desprecio o el desaliento de otros hacia el. Es alguien que tiene mucho potencial pero que fue etiquetado como una persona no funcional, algo que escucho durante toda su vida sobre todo por parte de su madre, lo que lo hizo ser más retraído, tener más miedo al mundo, sentirse un poco inútil y también culpable por nacer con una condición que no solo lo afecta a él sino también a su familia, al no poder valerse completamente por si mismo.

Esta historia fue dirigida por la cineasta Yang Lina quien captó la atención del actor Jackson Yee un joven promesa, que decidió tomar este reto de hacer un personaje bastante complicado sobre todo porque el actor al ser una persona sana, tuvo que aprender a caminar, hablar, expresarse y moverse como alguien con una fuerte discapacidad motora. Bueno, he escuchado que ganó varios premios por su excelente interpretación del personaje y no es para menos, fue increíble la manera en la que se metió en el papel de Liu Chunhe y como desarrollo a un joven con discapacidad de una forma respetuosa pero a la vez muy ligado a la realidad de las personas con este tipo de discapacidad. Realmente es un actor prodigio que vale la pena seguir viendo en más películas o series, porque tiene mucho que ofrecer en cuanto a su amor por los personajes que le ha tocado.

En la historia que es de género drama, un género que suelo ver bastante seguido porque me gustan ver realidades diferentes tal vez a las que percibo en mi día a día, pero que siempre me dejan alguna reflexión para mí propia vida. Se puede ver que es una historia que puede ser muy común, las personas con discapacidad suelen ser ocultadas, dejadas a un lado, marginadas, incluso olvidadas por las personas que deberían cuidar de ellas como lo es la familia. En el caso de Liu Chunhe su madre era una mujer que cargaba siempre con el peso de tener la etiqueta del hijo discapacitado y como esto había cambiado su vida para siempre. El personaje de la madre se muestra de muchas maneras muy poco empática, pero ya llegando al final se da más una explicación en una escena sobre lo que ella verdaderamente siente y las razones por las que ella se comporta de tal forma, muchas veces arraigada por sus propios miedos.

En cuanto a la película, es una historia que puede ayudar a muchas personas para ver qué este tipo de realidades existen, que hay personas con diferentes discapacidades pero esto no quiere decir que sean personas que están limitadas completamente para hacer las cosas. De hecho, Liu Chunhe mientras avanza la película, con la ayuda de su abuela va dejando un poco los miedos y prejuicios de lado, he intenta hacer cosas que pueden cambiar su vida como buscar un empleo, conocer a nuevas personas y no quedarse siempre en su propio mundo. Pienso que esto ayuda mucho a las personas con una discapacidad, el tener el apoyo de alguien que crea en ti y que te impulse es sumamente importante para alguien con o sin discapacidad.

Es una historia fuerte de mirar, pero realmente es algo que te motiva a encontrar razones para seguir adelante, para tomar en cuenta a esas personas que pueden tener dificultades y que aún así tienen la voluntad de querer salir adelante, de querer mejorar sus vidas, de no pensar que por tener una discapacidad están limitados o que no podrán tener una vida como cualquier otro ser humano. Muchas veces la discapacidad más fuerte es la que está en nuestra mente, cuando nos ponemos limitaciones y creemos que no podremos lograr nuestras metas teniendo todos nuestros sentidos y nuestras habilidades motoras en perfectas condiciones. Deja mucho que reflexionar está historia, y si no la han visto se las recomiendo, definitivamente no saldrán con el mismo pensamiento al terminar de verla. 🫶🏼
