Film Review: Boulevard (2026) | The boulevard of broken dreams and stories without happy endings 🥀 [ENG/ESP]

Hello, friends from Movies & TV, I hope you are doing well. Recently, the movie Boulevard was released, a romantic drama adapted from the book Boulevard published by Flor M. Salvador on the Wattpad platform. This website is well known for hosting all kinds of stories, from romance books, science fiction, and mystery, to fanfiction. A long time ago, I had a Wattpad account and used it to read some books that seemed interesting to me at the time, or simply to read without as many restrictions as the Wattpad app has now. This book was highly popular, and I feel it’s one of those that climbed the ranks incredibly fast on the platform, making Flor M. Salvador one of the most popular writers on the site.

The story had slipped my mind; I think I started reading the book at some point but never finished it. However, I feel it was very special to many people, and when I saw they had released the movie, I decided to watch it—even though I had little hope of it being good, considering it is already a teenage story, which can have many immature aspects and a lack of seriousness in certain topics it touches upon.

The movie takes us into the world of Hasley Weigel, a young teenager who spends her life moving from city to city because her mother doesn't have a stable job that allows them to settle down in one specific place. When they both arrive in a new city where they hope to have a more stable life, Hasley has to face meeting new classmates, a new high school, and people who will change her life in one way or another. Hasley is a shy young girl, and when she arrives, she catches the attention of many at her new school, including Matt and Luke. Two completely different young men who start to take an interest in Hasley and her somewhat angelic, "good-girl" aura.

This story was written by Flor M. Salvador, a young Mexican author who was inspired by fanfiction and originally wrote this story as a fanfic featuring Luke Hemmings, a member of the band 5SOS. Additionally, the title is inspired by the Green Day song: Boulevard of Broken Dreams. This is very common on the Wattpad app; most stories are inspired by real-life artists or simply start as a way for authors on the platform to show the world their love for writing.
Hasley has the typical traits of a teenager—she is pretty and free-spirited, so it is very easy for her to start catching people's attention at her new high school.

The only thing is that it's more of the same; she is the typical protagonist who ends up falling for Matt, the popular basketball player. In fact, she quickly starts a relationship with Matt, and we can tell this story is going to repeat the same cliché as others: the new girl falling for the popular guy, who also feels a certain curiosity about her from the very first moment he sees her.

But then there's his counterpart: Luke Hemmings is the typical guy with serious problems, and I feel this is portrayed very well in the movie, even if at first it seems normal or common for a teenager. Substance abuse is his addiction, along with music from bands like Green Day, Blur, and others. Luke has several interactions with Hasley, which creates a sort of friendship between them that later escalates into something more. Thus, the protagonist is left with the dilemma of choosing between the guy who shows her attention and seems special, and the other, who can bring her a load of trouble and is highly unstable, yet still attracts her more because he sparks her curiosity.

The story is nothing new; in fact, it gets quite tedious watching how the actors perform in the movie. I feel that most film adaptations of Wattpad books always end up being poorly made or downright cringey. I feel many people probably watched it out of curiosity, like I did, or because it brought back memories from their teenage years when they read the book. It's the kind of story that makes you wonder how they can keep making things like this in the world of film and TV, but in the end, it still manages to get a laugh out of you because of how bad the story can be.

The most redeeming part of the story is the slight suspense behind Luke's character, as he is traumatized by the loss of one of his brothers and carries the guilt resulting from this tragic event. This is likely what drives Luke to find refuge in drugs to try and numb the pain he feels for not being able to do more for his brother's life. He also seeks comfort in music, which is another positive thing that can be rescued from this movie; he has very good taste in music—or at least, similar to mine 😂.

I didn't like the actors at all; I just don't feel a connection with stories when they are made in Spain. I don't know if it's just me, but I feel they do things half-heartedly, as if the story weren't already cliché enough without adding a lackluster performance to the mix. I didn't feel much chemistry between the actors, and that is one of the most important things when making a film, especially in the romance genre. However, I liked that they included different couples, like Olivia and André, who had some very sweet scenes, even if they were few and far between since the story didn't really focus on them.

The cinematography and set design were quite good—Netflix almost always excels in this area, and I think those who read the book might have felt happy seeing the special place Luke always visited and later took Hasley to see. It’s a very special spot, filled with things that matter to Luke and special moments, as well as plenty of vinyl records since he collected them by the boatload. I loved seeing those scenes in that location because I feel it was the only thing that set this story apart from other teen romances. Seeing the ending was a very beautiful moment, even if it's not what you'd expect from a Wattpad love story, let alone a Netflix one, so you have to be prepared for the end because even though I had read some of the book, I didn't remember that little detail.

And well, I really enjoyed the music; there are several popular songs playing in the movie, as well as songs by Spanish artists that I wrote down because I liked them. I feel that even though the story is just another Wattpad and teen romance cliché, I could still feel a bit of the drama and the meaning of giving value to things while they are present in our lives. Especially when we don't know how long our happiness or good times will last. And allowing ourselves to be a bit weird too, because within that weirdness Luke had, there was also a lot of passion for the things he loved, like music, and that is a very beautiful thing to see. 💫

Salvador en la plataforma de Wattpad. Esta página es muy conocida por tener historias de todo tipo, desde libros de romance, ciencia ficción, misterio, hasta libros de fanfics. Hace mucho tiempo tenía una cuenta de Wattpad y la usaba para leer algunos libros que en esa época me parecían interesantes o simplemente para leer sin tantas restricciones como las que tiene ahora la aplicación de Wattpad. Este libro fue muy popular y siento que es uno de esos que escaló sumamente rápido en la plataforma, convirtiendo a Flor M. Salvador en una de las escritoras más populares dentro de la página.

La historia se me había olvidado, creo que alguna vez comencé a leer el libro pero nunca lo terminé. Sin embargo, siento que fue muy especial para muchas personas y cuando vi que habían sacado la película me decidí a verla aunque con pocas esperanzas de que fuese buena siendo ya de por si una historia de adolescentes, lo cual puede tener muchos aspectos inmaduros y falta de seriedad en ciertos temas que se tocan.

La película nos lleva al mundo de Hasley Weigel una joven adolescente que se pasa la vida de ciudad y en ciudad debido a que su madre no tiene un trabajo fijo que les permita quedarse en un lugar en específico. Cuando ambas llegan a una nueva ciudad en la que esperan tener una vida más estable, Hasley tiene que enfrentarse a conocer a nuevos compañeros de clases, a un nuevo instituto y a personas que van a cambiar su vida de una manera u otra. Hasley es una joven tímida y cuando llega capta la atención de muchos dentro de su nueva escuela, entre ellos la de Matt y la de Luke. Dos jóvenes totalmente diferentes que empiezan a tener interés en Hasley y en cómo ella tiene un aura un tanto angelical y de niña buena.

Esta historia fue escrita por Flor M. Salvador una joven de origen mexicano, que se inspiró en los fanfics y que habría escrito esta historia inicialmente cómo uno donde mencionaba a Luke Hemmings integrante de la banda 5sos y además también el título está inspirado en la canción de Green Day: Boulevard Of Broken Dreams. Esto es algo muy común dentro de la aplicación de Wattpad, la mayoria de las historias tienen como inspiración artistas reales o simplemente comienzan como una forma de mostrar al mundo el amor por la escritura que tiene cada uno de los autores que forman parte de esta plataforma.

Hasley tiene lo típico de una adolescente, es bonita y posee un espíritu libre por lo que es muy fácil que se de lo de que ella empiece a llamar la atención en el nuevo instituto. Lo único es que es más de lo que siempre se ha visto, es la típica protagonista que termina enamorándose de Matt, el chico que juega baloncesto y que tiene una gran popularidad. De hecho ella rápidamente comienza una relación con Matt, y podemos notar que esta historia va a repetir el mismo cliché de otras: la chica nueva que se enamora del chico popular y que éste además siente cierta curiosidad por ella desde el primer momento en que la ve.

Pero luego está la contraparte, Luke Hemmings es el típico chico que tiene serios problemas y siento que se puede observar muy bien en la película aunque al principio parezca algo normal o común por ser un adolescente. Las sustancias son su adicción además de la música de bandas como Green Day, Blur, entre otras. Luke tiene varios acercamientos con Hasley lo que hace que se cree una especie de amistad entre ellos y que luego esto escale a más. Entonces está el dilema de la protagonista entre decidirse por el chico que muestra cierta atención hacia ella y que parece especial y el otro, que es el que puede traerle una cantidad de problemas y que es bastante inestable pero aún así, siente más atracción porque le genera cierta curiosidad.

La historia no es nada nuevo, de hecho es bastante pesada al ver cómo actúan los actores dentro de la película, siento que la mayor parte de las películas adaptadas de libros de Wattpad siempre terminan siendo algo mal hecho o que da pena. Siento que muchas personas probablemente la vieron por curiosidad como fue mi caso, o por qué tuvieron ciertos recuerdos de su adolescencia cuando leyeron el libro. Es una historia que te hace preguntarte cómo pueden seguir haciendo cosas así en el mundo del cine y la televisión, pero que al final te saca una que otra risa de lo mal que puede estar la historia.

Lo más rescatable de la historia es el pequeño suspenso que hay detrás del personaje de Luke, ya que él tiene un trauma por la pérdida de uno de sus hermanos y la culpa que carga producto de este evento traumático. Esto hace que posiblemente Luke se refugie en las drogas para tratar de apaciguar el dolor que siente por no poder haber hecho más por la vida de su hermano. Y también busque consuelo en la música, que es otra de las cosas positivas que se pueden rescatar en esta película, tiene muy buenos gustos musicales o al menos parecidos a los míos 😂.

Los actores no me gustaron para nada, no siento que conecte bien con las historias cuando son hechas en españa. No sé si es algo que solo me pasa a mí pero siento que hacen las cosas como sin ganas, cómo si ya de por si la historia no fuese demasiado trillada como para también ponerle una actuación de poca importancia. No sentí mucha química entre los actores y esto es de las cosas más importantes cuando se hace una película sobre todo del género de romance. Pero, me gustó que incluyeran parejas diferentes, cómo la de Olivia y André que hicieron unas escenas muy bonitas aunque fuesen muy pocas porque realmente la historia no se centraba en ellos.

La escenografía estuvo bastante bien, casi siempre Netflix destaca en esta parte y creo que quienes leyeron el libro pudieron haberse sentido felices al ver el lugar especial donde Luke siempre iba y que luego lleva a Hasley a conocerlo. Es un lugar muy especial, lleno de cosas importantes para Luke y de momentos especiales además de mucha música en vinilos porque coleccionaba por montones. Ame ver esas escenas en ese lugar porque siento que fue lo único que hizo diferente la historia de las demás que tratan sobre romance adolescente. Fue un momento muy bonito el ver el final aunque no sea lo que se espera de una historia de amor de Wattpad y mucho menos de Netflix, así que tienen que estar preparados para el final porque ni yo que había leído algo del libro recordaba ese pequeño detalle.

Y bueno disfrute mucho de la música, hay varias canciones populares que suenan en la película y también canciones de artistas españoles que apunte porque me gustaron. Siento que aunque la historia es un cliché más de Wattpad y de los romances adolescentes, pude sentir un poco el drama y el significado de darle sentido a las cosas mientras se tengan presentes en la vida. Sobre todo cuando no sabemos por cuánto tiempo nos durará la felicidad o los buenos momentos. Y permitirnos también ser un poco raros porque dentro de esa rareza que tenía Luke también había mucha pasión por las cosas que amaba cómo la música y eso es algo muy bonito de ver. 💫
