Film Review: Hamnet | The story that marked a turning point in Shakespeare's life. [ESP/ENG]

Hola amigos cinéfilos, espero que se encuentren muy bien. El día de hoy quiero compartirles mi impresión de la película Hamnet nominada en los Globos de Oro y también en los premios Oscar. Realmente quería ver esta película porque me parece maravilloso el trabajo de Paul Mescal, el es un actor bastante joven pero que ha logrado cautivar en grandes proyectos cómo Aftersun y Normal People, por nombrar algunas. Estuve emocionada, pero no sabía muy bien de que iba la historia y me vi la película son ninguna expectativa y sin saber de qué se trataba hasta terminarla.

Hello, fellow film buffs, I hope you are all doing well. Today I want to share my thoughts on the film Hamnet, which has been nominated for both the Golden Globes and the Oscars. I really wanted to see this film because I think Paul Mescal's work is wonderful. He is a fairly young actor, but he has managed to captivate audiences in major projects such as Aftersun and Normal People, to name a few. I was excited, but I didn't really know what the story was about, so I watched the film without any expectations and without knowing what it was about until I finished it.

Hamnet dirigida por Chloé Zhao y protagonizada por Jessie Buckley, Jacobi Jupe y Paul Mescal, es una historia que cuenta la vida desde lo más profundo de la historia de Shakespeare, el como conoció a quien fue su pareja y la madre de sus hijos, y como también ocurrió un hecho que cambiaría su vida para siempre. La película está ambientada en la época de los años 1580-1590 y nos muestra la vida de un joven profesor que se dedica a ser profesor de Latín, guiado por un padre bastante estricto y sintiendo siempre la presion de no ser lo suficiente para él, invitándolo a abandonar su pasión por las letras y queriendo que tuviera un trabajo "más ambicioso" que le diera la posiblidad de cambiar de estilo de vida, básicamente que dejara de ser tan soñador.

Hamnet, directed by Chloé Zhao and starring Jessie Buckley, Jacobi Jupe, and Paul Mescal, is a story that recounts life from the depths of Shakespeare's history, how he met his partner and the mother of his children, and how an event occurred that would change his life forever. The film is set in the 1580s and 1590s and shows us the life of a young teacher who is dedicated to teaching Latin, guided by a rather strict father and always feeling the pressure of not being good enough for him, urging him to abandon his passion for literature and wanting him to have a "more ambitious" job that would give him the opportunity to change his lifestyle, basically to stop being such a dreamer.

La fotografía es hermosa, muestra el lugar donde creció William Shakespeare en medio de inmensas zonas rurales, casas de estilo muy antiguo, las labores que cumplían los que hacían su vida en ese pueblo de pocas personas, pero donde tuvo la gran fortuna o casualidad de encontrarse a la mujer que lo haría dejar todo atrás, sus propios miedos y hasta librarse del yugo de su padre. Agnes quien había crecido también en el pueblo era una mujer muy curiosa, de profundas ideas y conexiones con el medio ambiente y también con un lado más místico, al conocer a William fue amor a primera vista aunque ella se rehusaba a que el amor entre ellos surgiera porque creía que no era lo correcto sobre todo porque ella no estaba al mismo nivel económico y no era de una familia prestigiosa, como esperaba el padre de William.

El amor de todas maneras surgió entre ellos, momentos donde se iban conociendo y aprendiendo uno del otro, hicieron que se creará una gran conexión entre ambos y que sintieran que debían estar juntos. William se enamoró de inmediato y no dudó en querer casarse y formar una familia con Agnes a pesar de la desaprobación de su padre, de las diferencias entre ambos y de lo que las personas decían acerca de la propia Agnes, donde básicamente la llamaban bruja y que nunca podría ser alguien digno debido a que tiene un pasado que también la marcó y que su forma de ver la vida es un tanto diferente y es muy fuerte de carácter y también al momento de tomar decisiones.

When she met William, it was love at first sight, although she refused to let their love blossom because she believed it was not right, especially since she was not of the same economic status and did not come from a prestigious family, as William's father expected.

Love blossomed between them anyway. As they got to know each other and learned about each other, a strong connection developed between them, and they felt that they belonged together. William fell in love immediately and did not hesitate to want to marry Agnes and start a family with her, despite his father's disapproval, the differences between them, and what people said about Agnes herself, where they basically called her a witch and said she could never be someone worthy because she had a past that also marked her and her way of seeing life was somewhat different and she was very strong-willed and decisive.

La familia termina unida entre William y Agnes, con un amor que terminó por darles tres hijos, dos hembras y un varón llamado Hamnet. Tuvieron que vivir procesos difíciles sobre todo al momento de Agnes dar a luz y todo el tema de que William no estaba ya muy presente en el hogar debido a sus viajes de trabajo. En esto pasaron mucho tiempo separados, mientras los niños crecían y Agnes iba y venía solo para darles un mejor futuro y que después pudieran mudarse del pueblo. La relación se mantenía pero ya habían cosas que fallaban como la falta de compañía y de atención, también el que William no estuviera tan presente para ver a sus hijos crecer.

Mi primera impresión fue que tanto Jessie Buckley como Paul Mescal tenían una química increíble, realmente se sentía el amor, una relación muy fuerte que cambió la vida de ambos de diferentes maneras. Las escenas son tan especiales que en las dos horas de película no sentí que fuera demasiado larga la película, algunos dijeron que no les pareció tan buena porque se enfocó demasiado la historia en la vida amorosa de William y en su esposa e hijos. Pero es algo que la hace aún más especial, el ver ese lado humano detrás de un gran personaje como lo fue Shakespeare, mostrando tanto sus debilidades como sus fortalezas. La actuación del pequeño Hamnet interpretado por Jacobi Jupe es estupenda, se siente el amor que refleja como un niño de su edad, lleno de ilusiones, una gran pasión por el teatro y un camino infinito por sus padres pero sobre todo por sus hermanas, el es clave de la historia que se ve en la película y que se pudiera decir es inspirada en él.

The family ended up united between William and Agnes, with a love that eventually gave them three children, two girls and a boy named Hamnet. They had to go through difficult times, especially when Agnes gave birth and William was not very present at home due to his work trips. They spent a lot of time apart, while the children grew up and Agnes came and went just to give them a better future so that they could later move away from the village. The relationship remained intact, but there were already things that were failing, such as the lack of companionship and attention, as well as William not being around to see his children grow up.

My first impression was that Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal had incredible chemistry; you could really feel the love, a very strong relationship that changed both their lives in different ways. The scenes are so special that in the two hours of the film, I didn't feel that it was too long. Some said that they didn't think it was that good because the story focused too much on William's love life and his wife and children. But that's what makes it even more special, seeing the human side behind a great character like Shakespeare, showing both her weaknesses and her strengths. The performance of little Hamnet, played by Jacobi Jupe, is wonderful. You can feel the love he reflects as a child his age, full of dreams, a great passion for theatre and an infinite path for his parents, but above all for his sisters. He is key to the story seen in the film, which could be said to be inspired by him.

El punto de la película también es una terrible muerte que ocurre y que cambia para siempre la relación que tiene Shakespeare con su esposa y con su vida entre el trabajo y su familia. Hay momentos de mucha tristeza, de enfrentar el dolor y de tratar de entender mediante el arte cómo se puede también honrar la memoria de quien ya no está. Tal vez por esa razón me gustó tanto, porque muestra con gran sensibilidad todo lo que vivió Agnes como mujer, esposa y madre, como llevo el dolor en sus hombros muchas veces en la ausencia de su hogar y cómo William también lo hizo pero de una manera diferente.

No es necesario saber demasiado sobre la película o sobre la historia de William Shakespeare ya que en esta película te muestra una de sus mejores etapas y también donde tuvo que aprender a estar en soledad, a amar en lejanía, a saber cuidar aunque no entendiera muchas cosas. Tanto Agnes como William fueron dos personas que vivieron con intensidad su relación, que amaron, que se lastimaron pero que aún después de todo lo que tuvieron que pasar, decidieron darle un valor a eso que les había pasado y que derrumbó los muros del amor que habían construido. El final de la película es nostálgico y da un cierre excelente para el dolor que sentían Agnes y William, demostrando que se puede saber atravesar el dolor y convertirlo en arte para honrar esos momentos que marcan la vida.

The film also focuses on a terrible death that occurs and forever changes Shakespeare's relationship with his wife and his life between work and family. There are moments of great sadness, of facing pain and trying to understand through art how one can also honour the memory of those who are no longer with us. Perhaps that is why I liked it so much, because it shows with great sensitivity everything that Agnes experienced as a woman, wife and mother, how she carried the pain on her shoulders many times in the absence of her home and how William did too, but in a different way.

It is not necessary to know too much about the film or the story of William Shakespeare, as this film shows one of his best periods and also where he had to learn to be alone, to love from a distance, to know how to care even though he did not understand many things. Both Agnes and William were two people who lived their relationship intensely, who loved, who hurt each other, but even after everything they had to go through, they decided to value what had happened to them and what had broken down the walls of love they had built. The ending of the film is nostalgic and provides an excellent closure to the pain felt by Agnes and William, showing that it is possible to work through pain and turn it into art to honour those moments that mark our lives.
