Film Review: Project Hail Mary ☄️[ENG/ESP]

Hello, fellow movie buffs! I hope you are all doing great. Today, I want to share a review of one of the best movies I’ve seen so far this year, 2026. Project Hail Mary is a sci-fi drama that connects us with two completely different characters. One comes from Earth: a man passionate about science and education who is selected to lead this project; the other, despite being from another planet, somehow finds a bond with the protagonist, creating a relationship that will allow them to stay alive and, furthermore, save humanity, which is the main theme of the story.

Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) is a school teacher who, after being evaluated by the group in charge of Project Hail Mary, is chosen as the key piece to go into space and save the planet from a catastrophic end. Eva Stratt, the strict mission commander, is certain that Grace is capable of keeping the world from meeting its end. However, the situation is complicated for him, as he doesn't believe he is capable of accepting such a huge responsibility. Despite his doubts, he ends up in space, and that is where the movie begins: waking up in the middle of a spaceship without knowing who he is or why he is there.

In the middle of what feels like a nightmare, Grace discovers that he is not alone, although the other crew members unfortunately did not survive. This leads him to explore the ship and familiarize himself with the environment that is now his home. What he doesn't know is that there is more life in deep space; through a message sent by a strange object, he finds a peculiar-looking being with whom he begins to develop a connection.
After spending so much time with this rock-like creature, he decides to name him Rocky. At first, it seems like Rocky cannot express himself, but Grace gets closer to him and teaches him how to communicate, learn new words, and know more about planet Earth.

Rocky looks like a simple rock, but he is the character that stands out the most in the story. Although he is not human, his way of interacting with Grace restores his hope of returning home alive and saving the world from a catastrophe. The relationship between Grace and Rocky is deeply moving. Both develop a specific system to communicate and accompany each other while searching for a solution to the problem threatening Earth. Furthermore, Rocky confesses that he misses his own people, who are in an unknown location. This closeness keeps the movie in a sweet spot of mixed emotions; it is beautiful to see them interact with so much empathy, as if they were both human. Rocky has a big heart (even if he doesn't have a real one), and Grace learns so much from him that his vision of the mission changes forever.

It is a two-hour movie that is completely worth watching. I loved the choice of Ryan Gosling as the protagonist; the connection he transmits with Rocky feels deep and real, even though they come from different worlds. The story is incredibly moving; it made me cry, especially in a scene where they exchange words. When one says, "I have given you nothing," and the other replies, "You have given me everything," it truly broke my heart and gave me goosebumps. It was a beautiful moment, even if it completely opened the floodgates for me.

Ryan Gosling is a great actor. Although I had only seen him in Blue Valentine (with Michelle Williams) and Drive, here he shows a very natural way of reaching the audience, without forcing or overacting his performance. I feel this production should win at least one major award because his interpretation is incredible. Moreover, despite being a long feature film, the pacing of the story keeps it from feeling slow. It is a beautiful piece of work that balances the drama of saving Earth with Grace's dilemma of whether to stay with Rocky or return to his home.

Rocky's character is extremely special; I don't think I had ever felt so much joy and sadness at the same time for a digital or fantasy character. He is unique, and I was surprised to discover that he was created using practical effects (a real puppet moved by a human crew) and not just computer graphics (CGI). This adds enormous value to the production, to the point where it is already being compared to Interstellar. I loved watching this story; it was different from what I usually consume, and I would have loved to enjoy it in theaters, as it must have been a beautiful visual experience. In conclusion, I highly recommend giving it a chance as soon as you have time; it is a story that, beyond the space drama, leaves us with a great lesson about friendship and empathy.

Uno viene de la Tierra: un hombre apasionado por la ciencia y la educación que es seleccionado para liderar este proyecto; el otro, a pesar de ser de otro planeta, encuentra de alguna forma un lazo con el protagonista, creando así una relación que les permitirá mantenerse vivos y, además, salvar a la humanidad, ya que ese es el tema principal de la historia.

Rocky parece una simple piedra, pero es el personaje que más destaca en la historia. Aunque no es humano, tiene una forma de interactuar con Grace que le devuelve la esperanza de volver a casa con vida y salvar al mundo de una catástrofe.

La relación entre Grace y Rocky es profundamente emotiva. Ambos desarrollan un sistema específico para poder comunicarse y se acompañan mientras buscan la solución al problema que amenaza a la Tierra. Además, Rocky confiesa que extraña a su propia gente, que se encuentra en un lugar desconocido. Esta cercanía mantiene la película en un punto de emociones encontradas; es muy hermoso verlos interactuar con tanta empatía, como si ambos fueran humanos. Rocky tiene un gran corazón (aunque no posea uno real) y Grace aprende tanto de él que su visión de la misión cambia para siempre.

Es una película de dos horas que vale totalmente la pena ver. Me encantó la elección de Ryan Gosling como protagonista; la conexión que transmite con Rocky se siente profunda y real, a pesar de que vengan de mundos distintos. La historia conmueve muchísimo; a mí me hizo llorar, sobre todo en una escena donde intercambian palabras. Cuando uno dice: "No te he dado nada", y el otro responde: "Me lo has dado todo", realmente me rompió el corazón y me erizó la piel. Fue un momento hermoso, aunque abriera los grifos por completo.

Ryan Gosling es un gran actor. Aunque solo lo había visto en Blue Valentine (con Michelle Williams) y en Drive, aquí demuestra una manera muy natural de llegar al espectador, sin presionar ni exagerar su actuación. Siento que esta producción debería darle al menos un premio importante, porque su interpretación es increíble. Además, a pesar de ser un largometraje largo, el ritmo de la historia evita que se sienta lenta. Es una obra bellísima que equilibra el drama de salvar la Tierra con el dilema de Grace entre quedarse con Rocky o regresar a su hogar.
