Film Review: Secretary | Passion, love and a touch of madness 🎬 [ESP/ENG]

Hola amigos cinéfilos, espero que estén pasando una bonita Navidad. Hace un tiempo mi hermana me había recomendado una película de Steven Shainberg llamada Secretary, interpretada por dos grandes de la actuación: Maggie Gyllenhaal y James Spader. Esta película es de género romance y drama con el tema del erotismo en la historia dentro de la relación que se muestra, la única película que había visto de ese estilo eran Nymphomaniac: 1 y Cincuenta sombras de Grey. Así que no sabía que esperar porque mi hermana me dijo que le había gustado mucho la historia. Los invito a leer mi reseña de Secretary.

Hello, film buffs! I hope you are having a wonderful Christmas. A while ago, my sister recommended a film by Steven Shainberg called Secretary, starring two great actors: Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader. It is a romance and drama with an erotic theme in the story that is shown within the relationship. The only films I had seen of this style were Nymphomaniac: 1 and Fifty Shades of Grey. So I didn't know what to expect, because my sister told me she really liked the story. I invite you to read my review of Secretary.

Lee Holloway es una joven que viene de una familia aparentemente funcional, con una hermosa hermana a la que le tiene un poco de envidia porque a logrado cosas que tal vez ella no producto de sus problemas de salud mental. Recientemente sale de un hospital psiquiátrico y vuelve a su hogar, aparenta estar bien pero hay momentos en donde vuelve a tener pensamientos pesimistas y de autolesion, sus padres son precavidos en cuanto a ocultar cualquier tipo de objeto punzante que ella pueda usar para herirse. Sin embargo ella guarda una caja con ciertas herramientas que en ocasiones usa, hasta que decide buscar un empleo, su primer trabajo y se presenta en un lugar donde buscan una Secretaria, ella no tiene experiencia de ningún tipo pero está dispuesta a aprender, sobre todo después de que va conociendo más a su jefe el abogado Grey.

Lee Holloway is a young woman who comes from a seemingly functional family, with a beautiful sister whom she envies a little because she has achieved things that Lee perhaps has not due to her mental health problems. She has recently been discharged from a psychiatric hospital and returned home. She appears to be fine, but there are moments when she has pessimistic thoughts and urges to self-harm. Her parents are careful to hide any sharp objects she could use to hurt herself. However, she keeps a box with certain tools that she sometimes uses, until she decides to look for a job, her first job, and applies for a position as a secretary. She has no experience whatsoever but is willing to learn, especially after getting to know her boss, the solicitor Grey, better.

La película es de drama y romance pero muestra una relación entre Lee y Grey que va creciendo mientras tienen extranas dinámicas a las que Lee se adapta. El abogado Lee no es del todo un hombre normal, tiene sus manías y una de ellas es buscar siempre una secretaria para poder jugar con ella por un tiempo y cuando el miedo a sentirse atado sentimentalmente llega, no le queda más que dar un cheque y despedirlas, pero lo que no sabe es que Lee es resistente a sus rechazos y hará lo imposible por continuar trabajando y teniendo la dinámica de erotismo que se da en ocasiones dentro de la oficina de Grey.

The film is a drama and romance, but it shows a relationship between Lee and Grey that grows as they experience strange dynamics to which Lee adapts. Lawyer Lee is not entirely a normal man; he has his quirks, one of which is always looking for a secretary to play with for a while, and when the fear of feeling emotionally tied down sets in, he has no choice but to write a cheque and fire them. But what he doesn't know is that Lee is resistant to his rejections and will do everything possible to continue working and maintaining the erotic dynamic that sometimes occurs in Grey's office.

Siento que antes de que existiera Cincuenta sombras de grey y cualquier otra película con el tema de erotismo, está fue la primera en dejar un mensaje de una relación entre dos personas y las cosas que podrían permitirse o no hacer. La dinámica es pasional pero a la vez te dan ganas de reír porque aunque la que salió del psiquiatrico fue Lee, su jefe Grey muestra comportamientos demasiado extraños, no con lo del sadomasoquismo, sino con la forma en la que se comporta, pero esto no lo abordan a profundidad en la película, ya que la historia va a lo que va, mostrar una relación donde hay intercambios de poder y de fantasías sexuales.

I feel that before Fifty Shades of Grey and any other film with an erotic theme existed, this was the first to convey a message about a relationship between two people and the things they could or could not allow themselves to do. The dynamic is passionate, but at the same time it makes you want to laugh because even though Lee was the one who came out of the psychiatric ward, her boss Grey exhibits some very strange behaviour, not in terms of sadomasochism, but in the way he behaves, but this is not addressed in depth in the film, as the story goes where it goes, showing a relationship where there are exchanges of power and sexual fantasies.

Algo que me gusto mucho fue la actuación de James Spader como Grey, siento que fue demasiado serio para lo que estaba ocurriendo con Lee y que nunca cambiara su expresión durante la mayor parte de la película causa gracia, además de que es súper guapo y queda perfecto para ese papel de jefe con un tornillo algo suelto. Maggie Gyllenhaal también lo hizo muy bien en su papel de Lee, ella se muestra como lo que es, una joven un tanto ingenua pero a la vez no, con problemas de personalidad, que busca de alguna forma encontrar su lugar en el mundo y que al conocer a Grey se abre a un nuevo mundo donde ambos pueden ser ellos mismos.

Something I really liked was James Spader's performance as Grey. I feel like he was too serious for what was happening with Lee, and the fact that he never changed his expression throughout most of the film is funny. Plus, he's super handsome and perfect for the role of a boss with a screw loose. Maggie Gyllenhaal also did very well in her role as Lee. She shows herself as she is, a young woman who is somewhat naive but at the same time not, with personality issues, who is somehow trying to find her place in the world and who, upon meeting Grey, opens up to a new world where they can both be themselves.

Es una película que desafía cualquier tipo de prejuicios en cuanto al erotismo, que muestra de forma real pero un tanto dramática la relación de dos personas que se encuentran y que luego no pueden dejarse ir porque aunque son un tanto diferentes, tienen cosas que los vuelven como imanes atrayentes. Fue una película divertida y que me sacó unas cuantas sonrisas y a pesar de ser algo antigua está bastante bien estructurada y dirigida la historia así que si tenían pensado verla en algún momento, podrían hacerlo porque van a disfrutar de esta historia que a pesar de ser de romance tiene mucho drama de por medio y eso fue lo que más me atrajo a verla.

It is a film that challenges any kind of prejudice regarding eroticism, showing in a realistic but somewhat dramatic way the relationship between two people who meet and then cannot let go of each other because, although they are somewhat different, they have things that make them attract each other like magnets. It was an entertaining film that made me smile a few times, and despite being somewhat old, it is quite well structured and directed, so if you were thinking of watching it at some point, you should do so because you will enjoy this story which, despite being a romance, has a lot of drama in it, and that was what attracted me most to watch it.
