Film Review: Sentimental Value | Emotional wounds are difficult to heal. 🎬 [ESP/ENG]

Hola amigos cinéfilos, espero que se encuentren muy bien. Hace poco vi una película muy nominada en diferentes premios del mundo del cine: Sentimental Value es una obra de Joachim Trier con excelentes actuaciones de Stellan Skarsgård, Renate Reinsve y Elle Fanning. A mi me gusta ver una película que tenga mucho drama, que se exploren temas de la vida real y que los personajes tengan conflictos que puedan ser mostrados y explicados durante toda la historia. Esta película no fue la excepción, es realmente interesante y aunque puede llegar a ser algo pesada por lo larga tal vez podría gustarles.

La trama nos lleva a la vida de Nora (Renate Reinsve) una joven actriz de teatro que lleva una vida aparentemente normal y que tiene una buena relación con su única hermana, pero el problema está en la relación que tiene con su padre, que estuvo ausente la mayor parte de su vida y del que tiene solo tristes recuerdos. Esta herida la ha acompañado durante toda su vida y no es hasta que su padre Gustav Borg (Stellan Skarsgård) un hombre que se dedica al mundo del cine, decide buscarla para saber de ella pero más que todo para ofrecerle un papel en una nueva película que quiere dirigir. Esto crea un conflicto entre ambos que se irá desenredando durante la película para que podamos entender la gravedad de el abandono cuando se es joven, las heridas y la ira que se puede acumular producto de la falta de cercanía con la persona que debería haber cuidado de ti, en este caso de Nora y su hermana.

Esta historia es sumamente dramática, sobre todo porque en el papel de Nora vemos a una mujer aún lidiando con todos esos sentimientos hacia su padre, que son normales porque no es culpable de haber tenido a un padre ausente ni de lo que siente. La actuación de Renate Reinsve es increíble y muestra el dolor en cada escena incluso la manera en la que se desenvuelve en sus obras de teatro son de forma dramática, teniendo en ocasiones problemas de pánico escénico lo que le dificulta poder hacer lo que tanto ama. Nora es una mujer con las heridas de una niña y esa niña exige respuestas a sus interrogantes y a todo el dolor por el que ha tenido que pasar prácticamente sola.

La figura del padre Gustav Borg (Stellan Skarsgård) es la de un hombre que no tiene mucha conciencia de lo que ocasionó con sus propias decisiones hasta ese encuentro con su hija, es bastante dedicado a su propio mundo que es el cine y dentro de sus historias quiere reflejar en la nueva película, la historia de una mujer quien tiene un hijo y que sufre problemas emocionales tan fuertes que la llevan a pensar en tomar las peores decisiones y esto es algo que me causó curiosidad en la película, porque la primera parte se cree que la historia va por un camino y luego se van haciendo revelaciones hasta que llegas al final y al menos yo me sorprendí.

En esta historia también destaca Rachel Kemp (Elle Fanning), una joven actora que conoce a Gustav y se siente profundamente emocionada por su trabajo artístico. Gustav al no tener la opción de poner a Nora como la protagonista, le ofrece el papel a Rachel quien durante la película va aprendiendo poco a poco de que va la historia y un poco también sobre la vida del propio Gustav. Los tres hacen un papel impecable en la película y creo que es de esas que ves y luego no la olvidas porque algo te deja, con una sensación de emoción y también de nostalgia y tristeza.

Los vínculos familiares siempre van a tener pequeños descocidos donde existan partes de la historia en la que algunos salgan lastimados con o sin intención, sucede mucho en la relación de los padres hacia los hijos cuando llega el divorcio, pero más que todo se ve en los hombres el hecho de buscar una nueva vida y tal vez olvidar lo que fueron y a quienes dejaron atrás. Tal vez pega un poco más fuerte cuando vienes de una familia fracturada y te ves dentro de la historia como si fuera la propia, es una película increíble y pienso que los actores no solo destacan por lo bien que hacen su trabajo, sino que además hablan en una lengua extranjera (francés) y esto hace que el reto de hacer la película sea más grande. Deberían verla y si ya lo hicieron me gustaría saber que les pareció esta historia y las actuaciones.

Recently I watched a movie that has been highly nominated in different film awards: Sentimental Value is a work by Joachim Trier with excellent performances by Stellan Skarsgård, Renate Reinsve, and Elle Fanning. I enjoy watching films that have a lot of drama, that explore real-life themes, and where the characters face conflicts that can be shown and explained throughout the story. This movie was no exception—it is truly interesting, and although it can feel a bit heavy because of its length, you might really enjoy it.

The plot takes us into the life of Nora (Renate Reinsve), a young theater actress who leads an apparently normal life and has a good relationship with her only sister. The problem lies in her relationship with her father, who was absent for most of her life and of whom she has only sad memories. This wound has accompanied her throughout her life, and it is not until her father Gustav Borg (Stellan Skarsgård), a man dedicated to the world of cinema, decides to seek her out—not only to know how she is but above all to offer her a role in a new film he wants to direct. This creates a conflict between them that gradually unravels during the movie, allowing us to understand the gravity of abandonment in youth, the wounds and anger that accumulate from the lack of closeness with the person who should have cared for you—in this case, Nora and her sister.

This story is deeply dramatic, especially because in Nora’s role we see a woman still struggling with all those feelings toward her father, which are natural since she is not guilty of having had an absent father nor of what she feels. Renate Reinsve’s performance is incredible, showing pain in every scene—even in the way she performs in her theater plays, which are dramatic in nature. At times she suffers from stage fright, making it difficult for her to do what she loves most. Nora is a woman carrying the wounds of a child, and that child demands answers to her questions and to all the pain she has had to endure practically alone.

The figure of the father, Gustav Borg (Stellan Skarsgård), is that of a man who is not very aware of the consequences of his own decisions until that encounter with his daughter. He is deeply dedicated to his own world—cinema—and in his stories he wants to reflect, in the new film, the story of a woman who has a child and suffers such strong emotional problems that she considers making the worst decisions. This intrigued me in the movie, because at first you think the story is going in one direction, but then revelations unfold until you reach the end—and at least I was surprised.

Rachel Kemp (Elle Fanning) also stands out in this story. She is a young actress who meets Gustav and feels deeply moved by his artistic work. Since Gustav cannot cast Nora as the protagonist, he offers the role to Rachel, who gradually learns what the story is about and also a bit about Gustav’s own life. The three deliver impeccable performances in the film, and I believe it is one of those movies you watch and never forget, because it leaves you with something—a feeling of emotion, nostalgia, and sadness.

Family bonds will always have hidden cracks where parts of the story leave some hurt, whether intentionally or not. This often happens in the relationship between parents and children when divorce occurs, but it is especially seen in men who seek a new life and perhaps forget who they were and those they left behind. It may hit harder when you come from a fractured family and see yourself within the story as if it were your own. It is an incredible film, and I think the actors stand out not only for how well they do their work but also because they perform in a foreign language (French), which makes the challenge of making the movie even greater.
