Film Review: Small Things Like These | Pequeñas cosas como estas [ESP/ENG]

Hola amigos cinéfilos, espero que se encuentren muy bien. Hace poco vi una película que tenía pendiente donde Cillian Murphy hace de papel protagónico, la película se llama Small Things Like These y es un drama sobre la indignación de su personaje y las contradicciones que este tiene entre lo que es bueno y lo que no, abarcando el tema del abuso sexual y de las religiones, más que todo en aquellas iglesias de una época donde era muy perturbador y normalizado el que actos como estos fueran realizados mientras las personas se hacían los indiferentes por temor a represalias o ser duramente juzgados.

Hello, fellow film buffs, I hope you are all doing well. I recently watched a film I had been meaning to see, starring Cillian Murphy. The film is called Small Things Like These and is a drama about his character's outrage and the contradictions he faces between what is good and what is not, covering the topics of sexual abuse and religion, especially in churches of a time when it was very disturbing and normalised for acts like these to be carried out while people turned a blind eye for fear of reprisals or being harshly judged.

Bill Furlong (Cillian Murphy) es un comerciante de carbón en la época de 1985, donde se encarga de vender esto para poder subsistir y darle una mejor vida a su familia que está integrada por su esposa y cinco hijas. El es un hombre que realmente solo vive para su familia y su trabajo, es tranquilo y aunque tiene un pasado que le hace sentirse perturbado y del que poco habla; consigue poder vivir el día a día como cualquier persona de su pueblo. Sin embargo, durante una visita a la iglesia del pueblo, se encuentra con una joven que le revela cosas que le hacen dudar de si debería hablar sobre esto con otros o debería hacerse el indiferente. Es un gran dilema para el sobre todo porque sabe que la iglesia del pueblo es un lugar sagrado y revelar algo tan grave podría traerle fuertes consecuencias a él y a su familia.

Bill Furlong (Murphy) is a coal merchant in 1985, where he sells coal to make a living and provide a better life for his family, which consists of his wife and five daughters. He is a man who truly lives only for his family and his work. He is calm, and although he has a troubled past that he rarely talks about, he manages to live day to day like anyone else in his village. However, during a visit to the village church, he meets a young woman who reveals things to him that make him wonder whether he should talk about it with others or pretend he doesn't know. It is a great dilemma for him, especially because he knows that the village church is a sacred place and revealing something so serious could have serious consequences for him and his family.

Cillian Murphy como en otros de sus trabajos, hace un papel impecable como Bll un hombre que es modesto, que es correcto y que sabe que el mundo no es un lugar del cual se pueda esperar siempre lo mejor. Tiene un pasado en el que un miembro de su familia sufrió un evento traumático y terminó muerto, este recuerdo lo persigue, le llega a través de sueños y siente que en parte el fue culpable por no haber hablado, pero era tan solo un niño y en esos tiempos nadie le haría caso a lo que dijera o pensara. Es un proceso que ha llegado a traer grandes momentos de estrés como se ve en el personaje ya siendo un adulto y más aún cuando empiezan a ocurrir cosas extrañas en el pueblo.

Cillian Murphy, as in his other works, plays an impeccable role as Bill, a modest, decent man who knows that the world is not a place where you can always expect the best. He has a past in which a member of his family suffered a traumatic event and ended up dead. This memory haunts him, coming to him in dreams, and he feels that he was partly to blame for not speaking up, but he was just a child and in those days no one would have listened to what he said or thought. It is a process that has brought great moments of stress, as seen in the character as an adult, and even more so when strange things begin to happen in the village.

La religión es uno de los temas más delicados y polémicos en esta época y en la que se muestra en la película, en los años 80, era aún peor el tener que callar cosas o no hablar demasiado por temor a ser castigado o incluso denigrado por querer hacer las cosas bien. Algo que puede ser irónico porque hacer el bien debería ser lo correcto, pero hay ocasiones en las que se debe pensar muy bien si se debería decir la verdad o se debería callar. El personaje de Cillian sufre en silencio, llega a casa todos los días con la viva imagen de la joven que vio, con la imagen de su propia hermana y el de niño sin poder hacer nada por ella.

Religion is one of the most sensitive and controversial topics of our time, and in the 1980s, as depicted in the film, it was even worse to have to keep quiet or not speak too much for fear of being punished or even denigrated for wanting to do the right thing. This can be ironic because doing good should be the right thing to do, but there are times when you have to think very carefully about whether you should tell the truth or keep quiet. Cillian's character suffers in silence, coming home every day with the vivid image of the young girl he saw, with the image of his own sister and that of a child unable to do anything for her.

Es muy sabido que las iglesias sobre todo en esos tiempos eran vistas como lugares sagrados, al nivel de que si no formabas parte de la misma, entonces eras el peor ser humano, porque Dios quiere que las personas se acerquen a él pero aquellos que deberían promulgar correctamente las palabras del señor, son los que suelen a puertas cerradas cometer los peores actos, como abusos a menores de edad, llegando a amenazarlos para que no digan nada, causando un gran daño para siempre en ese pequeño o pequeña y llevándoles a entrar en conflicto con lo que son y con lo que creían que era el mundo, rompiendo la confianza que sentían, llegando a pensar que están desamparados.

It is well known that churches, especially in those times, were seen as sacred places, to the extent that if you were not part of them, then you were the worst kind of human being, because God wants people to come closer to him, but those who should be correctly spreading the word of the Lord are the ones who tend to commit the worst acts behind closed doors, such as abusing minors, threatening them not to say anything, causing great damage forever to that little boy or girl and leading them to conflict with who they are and what they believed the world to be, breaking the trust they felt, leading them to think that they are helpless.

La película es corta pero muestra de manera muy honesta las prácticas de las iglesias hacia jóvenes, en este caso a muchachas del pueblo que eran enviadas al convento para poder recibir una mejor educación, aprender un oficio y tener además un lugar donde poder crecer y aprender de la palabra de Dios. Algo muy importante para las familias, que sus hijos pudieran ser reconocidos como buenos jóvenes por estas personas que se encargan de recibirlos en los conventos. Es un drama que te lleva a sentirte indignado por la situación que vive el protagonista pero que deja un poco de esperanza con el final que se muestra. No todos son tan valientes para decir la verdad, ni para hacer lo que va en contra de lo que la sociedad ve como correcto y el personaje de Bill intenta no repetir la historia que lo persigue desde su infancia.

The film is short but shows very honestly the practices of churches towards young people, in this case girls from the village who were sent to the convent to receive a better education, learn a trade and also have a place where they could grow and learn the word of God. It was very important for families that their children could be recognised as good young people by these people who were responsible for receiving them in the convents. It is a drama that makes you feel indignant about the situation the protagonist is in, but leaves a little hope with the ending. Not everyone is brave enough to tell the truth, or to do what goes against what society sees as right, and the character of Bill tries not to repeat the history that has haunted him since childhood.
