Film Review: Sound Of Metal | Reality can change in a matter of seconds, but having a condition does not necessarily mean you have a disability 🔊👂🏼 [ENG/ESP]

Hello, fellow cinephiles! I'm glad to be writing for this community once again. Not long ago, as a university assignment, we were asked to watch the movie Sound Of Metal. I had previously seen the movie's poster on the internet and it had caught my attention, but I never actually looked it up to watch it. My sister had seen it, though, and she told me it was a pretty good film. The important thing about the assignment was that it was related to my communication course, so the movie features many interesting points regarding both language barriers and psychological aspects.

Ruben (Riz Ahmed), a man dedicated to music—specifically playing the drums in a band—suddenly finds himself struggling to hear one day. This causes him a great deal of stress, along with questions and doubts about what is happening to him. He leads a rockstar life with his girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cooke), who is the lead singer of the duo they both form. However, after some time, Ruben begins to have hearing problems for no apparent reason, which prompts him to seek medical help to find out what is going on. It turns out to be much more serious than he ever imagined, and he begins a journey between accepting that there is massive auditory damage and searching for a solution to his problem, as he needs to get back to his normal life and keep playing because that is his passion.

The movie, directed by Darius Marder and released in 2019, surprised me a lot because I didn't think I would like it so much. It is worth noting that this film is Marder's directorial debut. It also features a performance by Riz Ahmed, who plays the main and fundamental role in this story. What's incredible is that I was reading about how the actor prepared by learning to play the drums, and what you can see at the beginning of the movie is that he does it like a professional. That speaks very well of his responsibility when stepping into a character with major problems and many things to fix.

The film focuses mostly on Ruben; he starts having hearing problems, which leads him to specialists who tell him that he has lost almost all of his hearing. This is extremely sad and a devastating answer for him, as he thinks about how he needs to keep doing concerts with Lou and continue with the life he has always led. Lou doesn't know about the problem at first, but later she finds out and suggests that Ruben look for help. They head to a rural area and there they find a religious community of deaf people, where their main mission is to teach others sign language and how to learn to live in silence.

Ruben goes through several stages: first, he has a lot of anger, not understanding why something like this happened to him; then he remains in denial about his situation, which puts him in an aggressive state, losing the ability to find any calm in such a complicated predicament. But somehow, he begins to interact within the community of people with hearing disabilities, and although he doesn't like the idea at first, he stays there because he has no other choice. It is difficult because he must learn to understand others and himself. I think the first part of the movie is mostly him in his state of denial, refusing to accept that he will no longer be able to do the things he used to do in the same way as someone who can hear.

I really liked this movie, perhaps because these types of reflective films that leave you analyzing the ending allow your thoughts to expand regarding what was seen in the story. I think the actor did an incredible job; he behaved so naturally in the face of an event that could have destroyed him, making every scene you watch feel completely believable. Furthermore, I feel that for the assignment it was necessary to understand how the topic of communication and the story of the film intertwine. Something I learned is that sign language is not a non-verbal language, because even though it has certain differences from the language we humans normally use, other ways of communicating among people with hearing loss truly do exist.

Quite simply, I think that if I had been in the protagonist's shoes, I would have reacted the exact same way. It is not the same to be born with a condition as it is for it to happen to you when you are already an adult and used to your normalcy. And something I really liked about the movie is that the gentleman who welcomes Ruben into the center for people with hearing disabilities tells him that nobody there sees the lack of hearing as a disability, but rather as a condition, and as such, they choose to see the positive side of things. Just because you lose a sense doesn't mean you have to stop doing the things you love, and that is something incredibly valuable. Faced with a difficulty like this, some people may choose to stay in denial, while others start living from a new reality. If you have the chance to watch it or if you like these kinds of movies, I assure you that you might really enjoy it.

Hola amigos cinéfilos, me alegra estar nuevamente escribiendo para esta comunidad. Hace poco como tarea de la universidad nos mandaron a ver la película Sound Of Metal. Ya antes había visto en internet la imagen de portada de la película y me llamaba la atención pero nunca la busque para verla. Mi hermana si la había visto y me comentó que era una película bastante buena. Lo importante de la tarea era que tenía que ver con la materia de comunicación, así que la película tiene muchos puntos interesantes tanto de las barreras del lenguaje como a nivel psicológico.

Rubén (Riz Ahmed) un hombre dedicado a la música, en especial a tocar la batería dentro de una banda, se encuentra un día con la dificultad para escuchar. Esto le genera mucho estrés, preguntas y dudas sobre lo que le está sucediendo. El lleva una vida de rockstar con su novia Lou (Olivia Cooke) quien es la cantante principal que ambos conforman. Sin embargo luego de un tiempo, Rubén empieza a tener problemas auditivos sin razón aparente, esto le hace buscar ayuda médica para saber que es lo que le sucede. Resulta que es mucho más grave de lo que se imaginaba y empieza una travesía entre aceptar que hay un daño muy grande a nivel auditivo y buscar una solución a su problema, ya que el necesita volver a su vida normal y seguir tocando porque esa es su pasión.

La película dirigida por Darius Marder y estrenada en el año 2019, me sorprendió mucho porque no pensé que fuese a gustarme tanto. Cabe recalcar que esta película es el debut de Marder como director de cine. Además cuenta con la actuación de Riz Ahmed quien hace el papel principal y fundamental de esta historia. Lo increíble es que estuve leyendo que el actor se preparó para aprender a tocar la batería, y lo que se puede ver al comienzo de la película es que lo hace como alguien profesional, eso habla muy bien de su responsabilidad al meterse dentro de un personaje con grandes problemas y muchas cosas que tiene que arreglar.

La película se centra más que todo en Rubén, el empieza con los problemas de audición y esto lo deriva a especialistas que le dicen que ha perdido casi la totalidad de su audición. Es sumamente triste y una respuesta negativa para el, ya que piensa en que debe seguir haciendo conciertos con Lou y continuar con la vida que siempre ha llevado. Lou al comienzo no sabe del problema pero luego se entera y le propone a Rubén buscar ayuda. Se dirigen a un pueblo y allí encuentran una comunidad religiosa de personas sordas, donde su misión principal es enseñarle a otros el lenguaje de señas y como aprender a vivir ante el silencio.

Rubén pasa por varios procesos, primero tiene mucha ira, no entiende porque algo así le sucedió a el, luego sigue en la negación de su situación, poniéndolo en modo agresivo, perdiendo la capacidad de encontrar algo de calma en su situación tan complicada. Pero de alguna forma empieza a interactuar en la comunidad de personas con discapacidad auditiva y aunque al comienzo no le agrada la idea, continua allí porque no tiene más opción. Es difícil porque debe aprender a entender a los demás y a si mismo, creo que la primera parte de la película mayormente es él en su estado de negación y de no aceptar que ya no podrá hacer las cosas que hacía antes de la misma manera que alguien que puede escuchar.

A mi me gusto mucho esta película, tal vez porque este tipo de películas que son reflexivas y que te dejan analizando el final permiten que se expandan las ideas en cuanto a lo visto en la historia. Creo que el actor hizo un papel increíble, se comportó de manera tan natural ante un hecho que lo pudo destruir, que se ve creíble cada escena que vas viendo. Además, siento que para la tarea era necesario entender cómo se entrelaza el tema de la comunicación y la historia de la película. Algo que aprendí es que el lenguaje de señas no es un lenguaje no verbal, porque aunque tengan ciertas diferencias con el lenguaje que usamos normalmente los seres humanos, si que existen otras maneras de comunicarse entre personas con problemas de audición.

Sencillamente creo que sí hubiera estado en el lugar del protagonista hubiera reaccionado de la misma manera. No es lo mismo nacer con una condición que, que te ocurra cuando ya eres alguien adulto y estás acostumbrado a tu normalidad. Y algo que me gustó mucho de la película es que el Señor que recibe a Rubén en el centro de personas con discapacidad auditiva, le dice que allí nadie ve la falta de audición como una discapacidad sino como una condición y como tal, deciden ver el lado positivo de las cosas. No por perder un sentido vas a dejar de hacer las cosas que te gustan, y eso es algo sumamente valioso, hay personas que ante una dificultad como está pueden decidir quedarse en la negación o empezar a vivir desde una nueva realidad. Si pueden verla o les gusta este tipo de películas les aseguro que les puede gustar.
