Hello cinephile friends, I am happy to be sharing a new review with you again. On this occasion, the movie The Bride! by director and actress Maggie Gyllenhaal caught my attention. It is a film that has been out for a short time and I truly had no major idea what the plot was about; however, I wanted to see it because I had already seen The Secretary, also directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, and I think she is a woman with immense creativity and good ideas when it comes to bringing them to the cinema plane. This story is different and somewhat crazy, you might like it, so I invite you to read the review 🧟‍♀️👰🏼‍♀️💚.

The plot leads us to meet the famous character of Frankenstein in a new facet; he, being a zombie turned into a man, returns to the place where he was created to ask for a wish from the feelings that begin to bloom as if he were a human being. His wish is to be able to have a girlfriend or a wife who can spend time with him, as much as he has seen in all the movie scenes, which he enjoys so much while surrounding himself with human beings and feelings through the screen. This wish may be something impossible, but just as he was created, there also exists the possibility of finding a way for him to have a wife. And that is how, in the middle of a nearly abandoned building, a doctor and her assistant see the rebirth of a woman they take from a cemetery. And the craziest story you can imagine begins between Frankenstein and the woman who will now be named Penelope.

The story is truly fun but has a bit of everything, starting because the genre of the film is: Horror, Drama, Romance, and Science Fiction. The beginning may seem somewhat confusing, but then everything starts taking shape. Frankenstein, who is played by Christian Bale, is a being who demonstrates something more than fear or mystery, with a quite tired, battered appearance, and also full of scars. There is also a being who begins to have the desire to live like a normal human being. From there is born the desire to discover what love is, what it feels like to have a partner, and how it could be possible for someone like him to get that wish to become a reality.

When they look for the woman in the cemetery and return her to life, they truly do not know the level of danger they are facing. This woman, who is masterfully played by actress Jessie Buckley, wakes up and has a somewhat distorted way of seeing life. It is not for nothing; she was dead and then returns without any kind of idea of who she is and who she is with. However, she takes confidence in Frankenstein quickly and both begin their adventure as friends at first. Until Penelope's madness truly makes itself noticed and it is almost impossible to stop the level of impulses she has.

The story is handled very well between characters; it is not just a romance, a whole police search is created to catch the monsters, as the people of the city call them. They get into different problems, steal, murder, and flee so that they can live being whatever they want to be. But a limit exists and for them, things will not be simple; no one can come to see them as more than freaks. But the story is entertaining although quite long, it has a duration of two hours and at the end, they show more of what happened after the movie finishes. To me, it seemed incredible and I loved every scene I saw.

Besides the incredible scenic work, makeup, direction, and production, it must be highlighted that the actors make this movie a complete madness, but a madness that makes you keep watching it. Jessie Buckley's acting is phenomenal; I had already seen her in her work in Hamnet, but in this movie, she demonstrates that she is made for any type of roles they offer her. She demonstrates the madness of a woman who was revived against her will, who died in a tragic way, who lives with the feeling of rage for being a woman (even if she is literally a zombie) and having to face detestable and very sexist men.

And this was also what caught me about the movie: not only did the actors do an impeccable job, but also in the story, an era like the 30s is allowed to be seen. Where there existed much machismo, sexism, classism, among other things, and that it is not only a fiction story of two characters who in the end are not human, but who demonstrate having much more empathy and feelings than the people who are part of the story. It has messages that you discover while you are watching the movie, and I love that, and I know it is part of the ideas that Maggie Gyllenhaal always has present when doing a work of this style. It is worth mentioning that Jake Gyllenhaal also appears as a character who seems not to have much importance but who is relevant also as part of the story.

So I recommend it because it is one of those few movies of these times that makes you feel that you see something different, or at least that is how I felt watching it. The scenes go between drama, romance, passion, fear, cynicism, criticism, the absurd, rage, among so many things that allow the story to start well and end in an incredible way. I truly enjoyed watching it a lot, I loved it, and I would like to see more works by Maggie Gyllenhaal and Jessie Buckley, two women with a great capacity to demonstrate a talent that is seen very little in the world of cinema being women. Es una película que tiene poco tiempo de haber salido y que realmente no tenía la mayor idea de que iba la trama, sin embargo, quería verla porque ya había visto The Secretary también dirigida por Maggie Gyllenhaal y pienso que es una mujer con una creatividad inmensa y con unas buenas ideas a la hora de llevarlas al plano del cine. La trama nos lleva a conocer al personaje famoso de Frankenstein en una nueva faceta, el siendo un zombie convertido en hombre, regresa al lugar donde fue creado para pedir un deseo desde los sentimientos que empiezan a florecer como si se tratase de un ser humano. Su deseo es poder tener una novia o una esposa, que pueda pasar el tiempo con él, tanto como lo ha visto en todas las escenas del cine, lo que tanto disfruta mientras se rodea de seres humanos y de sentimientos a través de la pantalla. Este deseo puede ser algo imposible, pero tal y como el fue creado, también existe la posibilidad de encontrar la manera de que él tenga una esposa. Y es así como en medio de un edificio casi abandonado, una doctora y su ayudante, ven renacer a una mujer que sacan de un cementerio. Y comienza la historia más alocada que puedes imaginar entre Frankenstein y la mujer que ahora se llamará Penélope.

La historia es realmente divertida pero tiene de todo un poco, comenzando porque el género de la película es: Horror, Drama, Romance y Ciencia Ficción. El comienzo puede parecer algo confuso pero luego todo va tomando forma. Frankenstein quien es interpretado por Christian Bale, es un ser que demuestra algo más que miedo o misterio, con un aspecto bastante cansado, aporreado y también lleno de cicatrices. Se encuentra también un ser que empieza a tener ganas de vivir como un ser humano normal. De allí nace el deseo por descubrir que es el amor, que se siente tener una pareja y como podría ser posible para alguien como él, el conseguir que ese deseo se vuelva una realidad.

Cuando buscan a la mujer en el cementerio y le devuelven la vida realmente no saben el nivel de peligro al que se están enfrentando. Esta mujer quien es interpretada magistralmente por la actriz Jessie Buckley, despierta y tiene una manera algo trastocada de ver la vida. No es para menos, estaba muerta y luego regresa sin ningún tipo de idea de quien es y con quién está. Sin embargo, le toma confianza rápidamente a Frankenstein y ambos empiezan su aventura como amigos al principio. Hasta que realmente la locura de Penélope se hace notar y es casi imposible parar el nivel de impulsos que tiene ella.

La historia se maneja muy bien entre personajes, no es solo un romance, se crea toda una búsqueda policiaca para atrapar a los monstruos como los llaman las personas de la ciudad. Se meten en diferentes problemas, roban, asesinan, y huyen de manera que puedan vivir siendo lo que ellos quieran ser. Pero existe un límite y para ellos las cosas no serán sencillas, nadie los puede llegar a ver más que como adefesios. Pero la historia es entretenida aunque bastante larga, tiene una duración de dos horas y al final muestran más de lo que sucedió después de que se termina la película. A mi me pareció increíble y me encantó cada escena que vi.

Además del increíble trabajo escénico, de maquillaje, de la dirección y producción. Hay que destacar que los actores hacen que está película sea una completa locura, pero una locura que hace que te mantengas viéndola. La actuación de Jessie Buckley es fenomenal, ella ya la había visto en su trabajo en Hamnet, pero en esta película demuestra que está hecha para cualquier tipo de papeles que le ofrezcan. Demuestra la locura de una mujer que fue revivida en contra de su voluntad, que murió de forma trágica, que vive con el sentimiento de rabia por ser mujer (aunque sea literalmente un zombie) y que se deba enfrentar a hombres detestables y muy machistas.

Y esto también fue lo que me atrapó de la película, que no solo los actores hicieron un trabajo impecable, sino que también en la historia se deja ver una época como la de los años 30. Donde existía mucho machismo, sexismo, clasismo, entre otras cosas y que no solo es una historia de ficción de dos personajes que al final no son humanos, pero que demuestran tener mucho más empatía y sentimientos que las personas que forman parte de la historia. Tiene como mensajes que vas descubriendo mientras vas mirando la película, y eso me encanta y se que forma parte de las ideas que Maggie Gyllenhaal tiene siempre presente al hacer un trabajo de este estilo. Cabe mencionar que también aparece Jake Gyllenhaal como un personaje que parece no tener tanta importancia pero que es relevante también como parte de la historia.

Así que la recomiendo porque es de esas pocas películas de estos tiempos que te hace sentir que ves algo diferente o al menos asi me sentí yo al verla. Las escenas van entre el drama, el romance, la pasión, el miedo, el cinismo, la crítica, lo absurdo, la rabia, entre tantas cosas que permiten que la historia empiece bien y termine de una manera increíble. Realmente disfrute mucho al verla, me encanto y me gustaría ver más trabajos de Maggie Gyllenhaal y de Jessie Buckley, dos mujeres con gran capacidad de demostrar un talento que se ve muy poco en el mundo del cine siendo mujeres.
