Hello, fellow cinephiles! How is your week going? I hope you’re doing wonderfully. Here in Venezuela, we’ve been dealing with severe power outages for several months now, which often prevents us from doing any task that requires electricity. I spent two days trying to watch The History of Sound, directed by Oliver Hermanus, as I hadn’t had the time—or the power at home—to finish it until today. I finally did it! I’ve wanted to see this film for a while since Paul Mescal is one of my favorite actors, and he’s one of the leads in this historical romantic drama. So, I persisted and kept watching despite it being quite long—about two hours. I’d love to invite you to read my review of this marvelous film. 🏚️🎞️

The story tells us about the life of Lionel (Paul Mescal), a young prodigy born with a natural gift for music. He has a very close relationship with it, partly because his father also loved music in general. However, Lionel possesses a sort of sixth sense; he doesn't just listen to or sing a song—he can truly hear every sound. Whether it’s a person’s voice, the chirping of birds, or the sounds of animals, he perceives them in his mind as if he were listening to live music. His way of perceiving music is truly special. This perspective allows him to grow up in a small town while always intending to steer his life wherever music leads him. That is when he meets David (Josh O'Connor), a young man who shares his passion for music, sparking a story between them that goes far beyond just a shared love for songs and instruments.

First, it is worth noting that this film is based on a short story by Ben Shattuck. It isn't a "true story," nor is it a narrative someone wrote exactly as it appears on screen. I assume the director read the story and extracted what he felt was most relevant to the tale he wanted to tell, crafting the film from a more dramatic and romantic point of view. This is a story about two men in the 1910s and 1920s who shared a deep connection—not just an intermittent relationship, but a genuine appreciation for each other's talent and their mutual love for music.

The chemistry between the actors is remarkable and believable. Paul Mescal always stands out in dramatic roles; he knows how to portray the emotions of his characters and make them unique in a way that allows the audience to connect with both him and the story on a more human and sensitive level. I only know Josh O'Connor from this film, though I know he has appeared in other works, and I feel that here he portrays a man deeply passionate about music but also somewhat troubled by his circumstances and the relationship that develops over time with Paul Mescal. Both did an excellent job, and you can truly feel a connection to the intense emotions in certain scenes.

The film is set in the early 1900s, an era when everything was stricter. People had to follow certain rules and societal roles; homosexuality and same-sex relationships were not spoken of openly. Because of this, the romance shown in the film is perceptible but subtle. There aren't many scenes of the protagonists showing overt affection, but the ones that exist are enough to show a bond much larger than just music. It is a story that reflects two men trying to be happy within their own lives, aside from what they shared. While the film might feel a bit slow at the beginning, the production design is highly enjoyable and very true to the era—locations set among vast mountains, cities that haven't been modernized yet, and people with very formal, distinguished clothing and appearances.

It’s lovely to see how they appreciated the aesthetic of that time. Furthermore, the film shows how the characters understand each other in a way that only happens when you meet the person who changes your world forever. It is also about romance, so it focuses mostly on music and the forbidden, intermittent love between Lionel and David. Music is a fundamental part of the story—the foundation of its beginning and end. The variety of songs and the stories behind them make the film special and truly justify its title.

I suppose this isn’t a movie for everyone, as some people may not feel comfortable watching stories featuring LGBTQ+ characters. However, same-sex relationships have always existed, and in this story, rather than showing "wantonness," it portrays how two men suffered in a way that only they could understand. The story is truly sad; it leaves you with a heavy feeling, a sense that things won't end well—and they don't. It doesn't have a happy ending; that's all I can say, at least not for the protagonists. There are also many lingering questions regarding an event that happens which isn't fully explained, but I suppose everyone can find their own meaning in it. Personally, I liked it and found it different—especially seeing actors like Paul Mescal and Josh O'Connor inhabit characters so passionate about music yet troubled by their own desires.

Hola amigos cinéfilos, ¿Cómo están pasando su semana? Espero que muy bien. Aquí en Venezuela llevamos varios meses con graves problemas de energía eléctrica lo que impide muchas veces realizar cualquier labor que requiera de este servicio tan necesario. Estuve dos días intentando ver la película The History of Sound del director Oliver Hermanus, ya que no había tenido el tiempo ni tampoco luz en mi casa para poder terminarla, hasta hoy que lo logré! La película tenía tiempo queriendo verla ya que uno de mis actores favoritos es Paul Mescal y el es uno de los protagonistas de esta historia de género drama, romance e historia. Así que insistí y continúe viéndola porque es bastante larga, dura unas dos horas. Y bueno me gustaría invitarlos a leer mi reseña sobre esta maravillosa película. 🏚️🎞️

La historia nos cuenta la vida de Lionel (Paul Mescal) un joven prodigio que nació con un don natural para la música, tiene una relación muy cercana con esta debido a que su padre también le gustaba la música en general. Pero él tiene como un sexto sentido, en el que no solo puede escuchar o cantar una canción, el realmente puede escuchar cualquier sonido, ya sea la voz de una persona, el sonido de los pájaros, el sonido de los animales, y puede sentir en su cabeza que suenan como si estuviera escuchando música en vivo. Es realmente especial su manera de ver la música y esto hace que crezca en un pequeño pueblo, pero siempre con la intención de guiar su vida a donde la música lo lleve. Y es allí cuando conoce a
David (Josh O'Connor) un joven que también comparte su pasión por la música, y comienza una historia entre ambos que va más allá de solo la pasión por las canciones y los instrumentos.

Para empezar cabe destacar que esta película está basada en el relato corto de Ben Shattuck, no es una historia basada en la vida real ni es una historia que alguien realmente escribió tal cual como la muestran en la película. Supongo que el director leyó el relato y de allí saco lo que creía más relacionado a la historia que quería contar, e hizo la película desde un punto de vista más dramático y romántico. Esta es una historia de dos hombres que en los años 1910 - 1920 estuvieron juntos de una manera más profunda, no solo compartieron un relación intermitente sino que también supieron apreciar el talento del otro y el amor que tenían hacia la música.

La química entre los actores es notable y creíble, Paul Mescal siempre se destaca por sus papeles dramáticos en donde sabe cómo mostrar las emociones de sus diferentes personajes y hacerlos únicos de una manera en la que la audiencia pueda conectar tanto con el como con la historia de forma más humana y sensible. Josh O'Connor solo lo conozco de esta película, aunque se que ha aparecido en otras cintas, siento que en esta muestra a un hombre sumamente apasionado por la música pero también un poco perturbado por las situaciones que tuvo que vivir y por la relación que se forma en el tiempo con Paul Mescal. Ambos hicieron un buen trabajo y hasta se puede sentir que conectas con las emociones tan intensas de algunas escenas.

La película se centra en esa época de 1900, unos años en donde todo era más estricto, había que cumplir ciertas normas, ciertos roles en la sociedad, no se hablaba abiertamente de la homosexualidad ni de una relación entre una pareja del mismo sexo. Es por eso que el romance que se muestra en esta película es perceptible pero de una forma sutil, no hay mayores escenas en donde se vean a los protagonistas dándose muestras de afecto, pero las que hay son suficientes para decir que realmente había un vínculo mucho más grande que no solo fue por la música. Se ve una historia que refleja a dos hombres intentando ser felices en medio de sus propias vidas a parte de lo que vivían en común.

Aunque al comienzo se pueda llegar a sentir un poco lenta la película, se disfruta mucho de la escenografía que es muy de la época, lugares en medio de grandes montañas, ciudades que aún no han sido modernizadas, personas con vestimenta y apariencia muy formal y distinguida. Es bonito ver que supieron apreciar lo que reflejaba esa época estéticamente hablando. Además, también muestran que los personajes se entienden de una manera que solo ocurre cuando conoces a la persona que cambia tu mundo para siempre. Es sobre romance también, así que va más que todo enfocada en la música y el romance prohibido e intermitente de Lionel y David. La música es parte fundamental de la historia, es la base del comienzo y el final de la misma, hay todo tipo de canciones y de historias detrás de ellas, lo que hace especial y que se apoye más aún en el nombre del film.

Supongo que no es una película para todo el mundo ya que habrán personas que no están cómodas viendo estas historias con personajes de la comunidad LGBTQ, pero se sabe que siempre ha existido las relaciones del mismo sexo y en esta historia más que mostrar una forma de supuesto "libertinaje" entre los personajes, se puede ver cómo dos hombres sufrían de una forma que solo podía ser entendida por ellos mismos. La historia es realmente triste, te hace sentir pesado, como que sabes que las cosas no van a terminar bien y así sucede al final. No tiene un final feliz es lo único que puedo decir, no al menos para los protagonistas. Y quedan muchas dudas con respecto a algo que sucede y que no se termina de entender, pero supongo que cada quien puede darle el sentido que prefiera al verla. A mi me gustó y me pareció diferente, sobre todo ver a actores como Paul Mescal y Josh O'Connor en estos personajes tan apasionados por la música, pero perturbados por sus propios deseos.
