Film Review: The Housemaid | A house with full of secrets. [ENG/ESP]

Hello, friends of the Movies & TV community. I hope you are having a good week. For some time now, I have been curious about the advertising and reviews for the film The Housemaid, released in 2025 and directed by Paul Feig. With two great actresses and a rather interesting plot, I had no idea that it was based on the book written by Freida McFadden. The thing is, the story looked good, but I wasn't convinced by the actors, mainly because I didn't have much faith that it would be as good as most people said it was. However, I looked it up and decided to see what the story was like, and I really loved it.

Desde hace tiempo veía con curiosidad la publicidad y las reseñas que tiene la película The Housemaid estrenada en 2025 y dirigida por Paul Feig. Con dos grandes actrices y una trama bastante interesante, no tenía idea de que era basada en el libro escrito por Freida McFadden, la cuestión es que la historia tenía pinta de ser buena pero no me convencía por los actores más que todo por qué no tenía mucha fe en que fuera tan buena como la mayoría de las personas decían, sin embargo, la busque y decidí ver que tal estaba está historia y la verdad me encantó.

The story centres on the life of Millie (Sydney Sweeney), a young woman who spends her days trying to survive after a past that still haunts her. Out of necessity, she looks for job offers and finds one where they are looking for a maid for a wealthy family. What better opportunity than to take the job? She would have good pay, a nice place to spend her time, and things would finally get back on track. She would find the stability and freedom she so longed for. What she doesn't know is that the Winchester family has some rather peculiar habits, and she will have to find a way to keep her job for as long as possible.

La historia se centra en la vida de Millie (Sydney Sweeney) una joven que pasa los días intentando sobrevivir luego de tener un pasado que aún la persigue, por temas de necesidad busca ofertas de trabajo y encuentra una donde solicitan a una sirvienta para una familia de bastante dinero y que mejor oportunidad que tomar el trabajo, tendría buena remuneración, un lugar lindo donde pasar el tiempo y además las cosas por fin se encarrilarian, encontraría la estabilidad y la libertad que tanto anhelaba. Lo que no sabe es que la familia Winchester tiene sus cosas algo curiosas y ella deberá buscar la manera de mantener el trabajo el mayor tiempo posible.

The film shows how Millie performs in an environment of wealthy people, with ways of acting and thinking that are very different from what she is used to seeing. However, her desire for a job and stability leads her to decide to work for the Winchesters, who are a perfect family, or at least that is what they appear to be. Both the wife, Nina Winchester (Amanda Seyfried), and the husband, Andrew Winchester (Brandon Sklenar), make an ideal couple. They have a dream home, and a ten-year-old daughter, and they couldn't be happier with their life until cracks begin to appear, especially in Nina's behaviour at home.

La película muestra como Millie se desempeña dentro de un ambiente de personas de dinero, con formas de actuar y de pensar muy distintas a lo que ella está acostumbrada a ver. Sin embargo, el deseo de tener un empleo y estabilidad le hacen tomar la decisión de trabajar para los Winchester quienes son una familia perfecta o al menos eso es lo que aparentan, tanto la esposa Nina Winchester (Amanda Seyfried) como el marido Andrew Winchester (Brandon Sklenar) hacen una pareja ideal, tienen una casa de ensueño, ambos tienen una hija de unos diez años y no podrían ser más felices con la vida que llevan hasta que las costuras empiezan a notarse sobre todo por el comportamiento de Nina en el hogar.

Nina is a woman who usually spends her time meeting with other local mothers and shows deep and selfless love for her husband and daughter. From the beginning, she makes Millie such a wonderful offer to work in the house that you feel something strange is about to happen over time. Nina's behaviour is very erratic; one day she can be the kindest and most charismatic person, and the next she is criticising Millie for not doing her job properly or showing her that she is superior because they are from different social classes.

Nina es una mujer que suele pasar el tiempo entre reuniones con otras madres del lugar y que muestra un amor profundo y abnegado hacia su esposo y su hija, desde el comienzo le ofrece una oferta tan maravillosa a Millie para trabajar en la casa que se siente que algo extraño está por ocurrir con el tiempo. The problem escalates when Nina, who wants to get pregnant, decides to have some tests done and finds out that she cannot have children. Andrew is the first to find out, and, gaining a little more confidence, he confides in Millie, whom he sees as a trustworthy person who continues to do her job despite the mistreatment she has received. From that moment on, Millie and Andrew begin to exchange glances and meet each other's eyes, as it is difficult not to be attracted to someone who is completely charming and always has a positive attitude, despite noticing that his wife does not behave well.

The film, which is based on the book by Freida McFadden, shows a rather intense and unexpected situation. You start out thinking you know what is going on inside that house, and then everything becomes increasingly darker. I imagine the book must be more shocking and intense in terms of the description of the characters and the situations they experience. I have no idea if it is a faithful adaptation of the book, but for me it was a pretty good film, although I didn't have high hopes, mainly because I thought it was more of a comedy and perhaps about infidelity, but no, it's more about psychological issues and falling into the hands of someone who is not right in the head and who then shows who they really are.

La película que está basada en el libro de Freida McFadden siento que muestra una situación bastante fuerte en inesperada, comienzas creyendo que sabes lo que está pasando dentro de esa casa y luego todo se torna más y más oscuro. El libro me imagino que debe ser más impactante y fuerte en cuanto a la descripción de los personajes y a las situaciones que viven, no tengo una idea de si es una adaptación fiel a lo que es el libro pero para mí fue una película bastante buena, aunque no tenía muchas esperanzas sobre todo porque creía que era una historia más sobre comedia y tal vez infidelidad pero no, va más a asuntos psicológicos y a caer en manos de alguien que no está bien de la cabeza y que luego demuestra quién es realmente.

The performances were quite good, especially Amanda Seyfried's, who demonstrates a dramatic and heartfelt character development, where she is more than just a woman with mood swings and an almost perfect life. Sydney Sweeney's performance is good, although she is not one of my favourite actresses, but in this story she shows that she can play more serious roles than she has done before. The performance of Brandon Sklenar, whom I had already seen in the adaptation of the book It Ends With Us, is acceptable, especially after the story changes course and more hidden things are revealed.

Las actuaciones estuvieron bastante bien, sobre todo hay que destacar la de Amanda Seyfried quien demuestra un desarrollo de personaje dramático y muy sentido, donde es más que una mujer con cambios de humor y una vida casi perfecta. La actuación de Sydney Sweeney es buena aunque no es de mis actrices favoritas, pero en esta historia demuestra que puede hacer papeles más serios que los que ya ha hecho. La actuación de Brandon Sklenar quien ya había visto en la adaptación del libro It Ends With Us, es aceptable sobre todo después de que la historia va cambiando de rumbo y se descubren más cosas que estaban ocultas.

There are probably better thriller films, but this one managed to hook me from the start. It gets more and more interesting, and the last half hour is totally unexpected. That's what impressed me the most and made me understand why so many people like this film. However, the ending, which I don't know how it is described in the book, was a bit bland, and I felt it lacked emotion and was rushed. I think that's what I liked least about the film itself, but overall it's quite good and has a good plot. It's worth noting that when you realise that not everything is as it seemed, you're left with the feeling of having seen a story full of successes and moments that really cause despair and intrigue. I'd like to know what you thought of this film. I liked it and I think it's one of Sydney Sweeney's best works so far.

Probablemente hay mejores películas de thriller, pero está logro atraparme desde el comienzo, se va poniendo cada vez más interesante y realmente la última media hora es totalmente inesperada, eso fue lo que más me impresionó y me hizo entender porque a tantas personas les gusto este film. Sin embargo, el final que no se como sea descrito en el libro, fue algo suave y sentí que faltó más emoción y no hacer todo de manera tan apresurada, creo que eso es lo que menos me gusto de la película en si, pero en general está bastante buena y tiene una buena trama, destacando que al darte cuenta de que no todo es como parecía, te llevas esa sensación de haber visto una historia llena de aciertos y de momentos que realmente causan desespero e intriga. Me gustaría saber que les pareció esta película, a mi me gusto y pienso que es de los mejores trabajos de Sydney Sweeney hasta ahora.
