Film Review: This Time | Distance leaves memories if something was truly special. [ESP/ENG]

Espero que se encuentren muy bien, tenía un tiempo posponiendo —debido a falta de momentos para concentrarme y escribir—, mi reseña sobre una película que no es tan conocida y que probablemente a algunos que son de gustos más hacia los géneros de romance y un poco de drama, puedan llegar a disfrutar. La película se llama This Time del director Sebastien Tobler, una historia llena de recuerdos de la adolescencia y sobre todo de como el tiempo puede llegar a hacer que nos reencontremos con personas que fueron especiales para nosotros en algún punto de nuestra vida. Así que los invito a leer mi reseña sin dar spoilers 😅.

I hope you are all doing well. I had been putting off writing my review of a little-known film for a while due to a lack of time to concentrate and write. However, I think some of you who are more into romance and drama might enjoy it. The film is called This Time by director Sebastien Tobler, a story full of memories of adolescence and, above all, how time can bring us back together with people who were special to us at some point in our lives. So, I invite you to read my review without giving away any spoilers 😅.

This Time sigue la relación entre Laela y Colin, dos jóvenes de Indonesia quienes luego de haber estudiado juntos y tenido un romance fugaz, pierden el contacto por completo pero, la vida de alguna forma extraña y tal vez mágica, los vuelve a unir en la ciudad de Los Angeles en los Estados Unidos. El reencuentro trae viejos recuerdos, sensaciones y emociones de las cosas que vivieron juntos y también, de lo que son ahora, dos personas adultas que han vivido diferentes cosas que los han hecho cambiar y crecer. En este tiempo juntos ambos deciden darse la oportunidad de volver a conocerse y tal vez, ver si queda algo de esa química y ese amor adolescente que alguna vez sintieron y que los unió profundamente.

This Time follows the relationship between Laela and Colin, two young people from Indonesia who, after studying together and having a brief romance, lose contact completely but, in some strange and perhaps magical way, life brings them back together in the city of Los Angeles in the United States. The reunion brings back old memories, feelings and emotions from the things they experienced together and also from what they are now, two adults who have lived through different things that have changed and matured them. During this time together, they both decide to give themselves the opportunity to get to know each other again and perhaps see if there is anything left of that chemistry and teenage love they once felt and that brought them together so deeply.

Esta historia me recuerda un poco a la película de About Time, solo que en esta película ninguno de los protagonistas viaja en el tiempo o al menos no de la forma en la que se detalla en About Time. Laela es una mujer quien tiene una visión de la vida más aventurera, tiene más ese sueño de ser artista y de poder vivir de su arte, mientras que Colin ya ha estado en una relación seria, se ha separado de esta persona quién además es la mamá de su única hija. Ambos tienen visiones diferentes de la vida, pero al encontrarse es como si volvieran el tiempo atrás y recordaran su etapa más brillante y donde creció ese cariño que los unió.

This story reminds me a little of the film About Time, except that in this film none of the protagonists travel through time, or at least not in the way described in About Time. Laela is a woman who has a more adventurous outlook on life; she dreams of being an artist and making a living from her art, while Colin has already been in a serious relationship and has separated from this person, who is also the mother of his only daughter. They both have different outlooks on life, but when they meet, it is as if they turn back time and remember their most brilliant period and where the affection that brought them together grew.

La película va siguiendo a los protagonistas mientras visitan diferentes lugares de Los Angeles y, también se cuentan un poco de todo lo que han pasado hasta ese momento. Se siente muy íntimo y a la vez muy cercano verlos a ambos conversar como si no hubiese pasado el tiempo. Ambos se sienten algo apenados y a la vez, piensan que tal vez el destino les intenta decir que de alguna manera deberían estar juntos. ¿Por que si se reencontraron después de tantos años e incluso en un país que no es su país natal, eso no significaría que realmente había algo que al menos se tenían que decir, o que tenían que hacer para darle una continuación o un final a su historia?

The film follows the protagonists as they visit different places in Los Angeles and also recount a little of everything they have been through up to that point. It feels very intimate and at the same time very close to see them both talking as if no time had passed. They both feel somewhat saddened and, at the same time, think that perhaps fate is trying to tell them that somehow they should be together. Because if they met again after so many years and even in a country that is not their native country, wouldn't that mean that there was really something they had to say to each other, or that they had to do to continue or end their story?

Tal vez no es una historia de romance en donde ambos se reencuentran y viven felices para siempre, pero si que tienen el tiempo para poner cada pieza en su lugar, para hablar de las cosas que no se pudieron decir y para realmente darse una última oportunidad... Es algo lindo, dentro de todo el pensar que puedes volver a encontrarte con alguien que significó mucho en un momento determinado de tu vida, y que además aún te recuerda y aún sabe cosas que solo conocían ambos porque tenían esa conexión que solo el amor puede dar. Me parece que es algo lindo y hasta especial, sobre todo por parte de la vida, el darte ese tipo de oportunidades, incluso si las cosas no resultan como esperabas.

Perhaps it is not a romantic story where they reunite and live happily ever after, but they do have the time to put each piece in place, to talk about the things they could not say and to really give themselves one last chance... It's a beautiful thing, thinking that you can reconnect with someone who meant so much to you at a certain point in your life, and who still remembers you and knows things that only the two of you knew because you had that connection that only love can give. I think it's a beautiful and even special thing, especially on life's part, to give you that kind of opportunity, even if things don't turn out the way you hoped.

Los protagonistas: Leialani Nicol y Ken Kirby tienen suficiente química, para hacerte sentir que realmente son dos personas que de alguna manera se pensaron incluso con el pasar de los años. Ambos actúan muy bien, sobre todo en algunas escenas donde tienen momentos en soledad y silencio, donde las palabras se quedan cortas y el solo tenerse cerca es más que suficiente y es lo único valioso que existe en ese preciso momento. Fueron muy buenos interpretando a esta pareja con una historia que puede ser más común de lo que parece. Aunque también muestran la realidad de que a pesar de los sentimientos, el tiempo también hace que muchas cosas cambien.

The protagonists: Leialani Nicol and Ken Kirby have enough chemistry to make you feel that they really are two people who somehow thought of each other even as the years went by. Both act very well, especially in some scenes where they have moments of solitude and silence, where words fall short and just being close to each other is more than enough and is the only valuable thing that exists at that precise moment. They were very good at portraying this couple with a story that may be more common than it seems. Although they also show the reality that despite feelings, time also causes many things to change.

Ambos tuvieron la oportunidad de verse, de hablar y de poder tener esa conversación que había quedado pendiente. Tal vez se pensaría que el final sería diferente a lo que sucedió, pero para mí fue bastante realista, ambos habían cambiado, sobre todo habían madurado y ya no eran los mismos. Se conservó el cariño, los recuerdos e incluso el respeto por lo que cada uno se contaba y lo que hacía que tal vez, el final que tuvo sucediera. Tal vez a algunos no les gustó cómo terminó, pero para mí no fue una historia solo de romance, sino también de aprender que hay cosas que se viven y que tienen su tiempo, y que luego ya hay que dejar ir aún con el cariño que se tienen y con la ilusión de lo que vivieron como adolescentes. Me gustaría saber que piensan sobre esta película, que les pareció el desarrollo de la historia y el final, los estaré leyendo 🥹.

They both had the opportunity to see each other, talk and have that conversation that had been left pending. Perhaps one might think that the ending would be different from what happened, but for me it was quite realistic. They had both changed, above all they had matured and were no longer the same. The affection, the memories and even the respect for what each one told the other and what made the ending happen were preserved. Perhaps some people did not like how it ended, but for me it was not just a story of romance, but also of learning that there are things that you experience and that have their time, and that then you have to let go, even with the affection you have for each other and the excitement of what you experienced as teenagers.
