Decision to Leave - Film Review [ESP - ENG]

Antes de finalizar este mes en el cual se cerró la temporada de premios al cine; quise ver películas las cuales son consideradas por muchos como las olvidadas por todos estos premios; normalmente opino que el terminado "películas olvidadas" las uso para que las que entraron en las nominaciones, pero no recibieron ningún premio; creo que hay listas de películas que cada año podemos decir que no se hizo justicia por lo que representan y justamente en ediciones anteriores he notado que esto es más habitual, claro esto es una opinión personal, pero no deja de ser anecdótico que existan films muy bien hechos y que no reciban reconocimientos; en esta temporada, en especial en los premios Oscar, creo que se cometió una gran injusticia al olvidar completamente a un film que debió ser considerado para estar dentro de esa lista de Mejor Película y que en esta publicación hago reseña.

Before the end of this month in which the film awards season closed; I wanted to see films which are considered by many as the forgotten by all these awards; normally I think that the term "forgotten films" is used for those who entered the nominations, but did not receive any award; I think there are lists of films that every year we can say that justice was not done for what they represent and just in previous editions I have noticed that this is more common, of course this is a personal opinion, but it is still anecdotal that there are very well made films that do not receive recognition; this season, especially in the Oscar awards, I think it was a great injustice to completely forget a film that should have been considered to be within the list of Best Picture and that in this publication I review.

"Decision to Leave" film Surcoreano que primeramente fue estrenado en el Cannes Film Festival cómo competidor y del cual su director Park Chan-wook ganó el premio a Mejor Director. Está película narra la historia de "Hae-Jun", un detective de la ciudad de Buscan, muy dedicado a su trabajo, casado y que está rodeado de compañeros de trabajo más jóvenes que él; un día se le es asignado un caso en dónde debe investigar lo sucedido con el fallecimiento de un retirado oficial de inmigración el cual su cuerpo es encontrado cerca de una montaña usada para la práctica de escalar; dicha investigación lo llevará a conocer a quien era esposa del fallecido, "Seo-Rae", una mujer hermosa, joven de decencia China que no habla muy bien el idioma coreano; desde el primer momento ella atraerá la atención de Hae-Jun que de manera inexplicable encontrará una conexión con esta misteriosa mujer y usará la investigación para poder acercarse a ella; eso hará que ambos crean un lazo que se tornará más como una amistad aunque existe la sensación de haber algo más; esto hará que Hae-Jun sienta que su vocación como detective y esposo cree un conflicto en dónde una posible felicidad este en peligro por secretos que no deben ser revelados.

El único film que he visto de Park Chan-wook es "Oldboy" (2003) una de las tres películas que conforman el llamado "Vengeance Trilogy" creado por Park. Después de una pausa de seis años, este director Surcoreano regresa a la gran pantalla con esta historia que está dentro del género del romance y misterio; puedo anexar que tiene mucha influencia de producciones conocidas como Film Noir. La manera de dirigir diferentes escenas me pareció genial siempre teniendo presente la perspectiva de su personaje principal, Hae-Jun; el hecho de seguir sus pensamientos o su narración de diferentes hechos es algo que caracteriza a este tipo de films dónde debemos ser parte de la investigación de un crimen; eso junto a muchas otras escenas donde son parte la persecución y dónde se demuestra los diferentes niveles de estrés y tranquilidad de su protagonista son las que más me han gustado junto a toda la secuencia que cierra la historia.

"Decision to Leave" South Korean film that first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival as a competitor and whose director Park Chan-wook won the award for Best Director. This film tells the story of "Hae-Jun", a detective in the city of Buscan, very dedicated to his work, married and surrounded by younger colleagues; one day he is assigned a case where he must investigate the death of a retired immigration officer whose body is found near a mountain used for climbing; this investigation will lead him to meet the wife of the deceased, "Seo-Rae", a beautiful, young woman of Chinese decency who does not speak very well the Korean language; From the first moment she will attract Hae-Jun's attention and he will inexplicably find a connection with this mysterious woman and will use the investigation to get closer to her; this will make them both create a bond that will become more like a friendship although there is a feeling that there is something more; this will make Hae-Jun feel that his vocation as a detective and husband creates a conflict where a possible happiness is in danger because of secrets that should not be revealed.

The only film I have seen by Park Chan-wook is "Oldboy" (2003) one of the three films that make up the so-called "Vengeance Trilogy" created by Park. After a break of six years, this South Korean director returns to the big screen with this story that is within the genre of romance and mystery; I can add that it has a lot of influence of productions known as Film Noir. The way of directing different scenes seemed great to me always keeping in mind the perspective of his main character, Hae-Jun; the fact of following his thoughts or his narration of different facts is something that characterizes this type of films where we must be part of the investigation of a crime; that along with many other scenes where the chase is part and where it shows the different levels of stress and tranquility of its protagonist are the ones that I liked the most along with the whole sequence that closes the story.

El guion escrito por el mismo Park demuestra como este tipo de films puede ser más profundo en dónde usa el romance el cual es el complemento perfecto para la historia de un crimen; posiblemente esta película en manos de otro guionista pueda enfocar la relación de los dos personajes principales en una relación apasionada, llena de desenfreno que los lleva por un camino con muchas dificultades sin un final agradable, pero lo hecho por Park demuestra que dos personas con vidas diferentes pueden conectar y forjar una relación en dónde el entendimiento es lo primordial, junto a la confianza y el apoyo entre ambos; justamente eso es la base de esta historia y hace que todo lo demás funcione tal como es los temas de investigación, misterio, humor y drama.

Las actuaciones son un factor importante del film; el trabajo realizado por Tang Wei cómo "Song Seo-rae", me pareció excelente; su hermosura y sencillez le da un toque especial a su personaje porque puede pasar desapercibida en cualquier lugar, pero si llegas a notar su presencia descubrirás lo hermosa que es; me gustó que fuera percibida por algunos como una víctima, pero en realidad es una sobreviviente, una mujer muy inteligente, decidida, fuerte, pero a la vez triste y solitaria; es un buen personaje y la actuación de Tang es perfecta para rol que debe practicar. La actuación de Park Hae-il es muy buena; me gusta como su personaje fue escrito y por supuesto como él lo interpreta; el detective "Jang Hae-jun" es un hombre determinado y enfocado en su trabajo; pareciera ser obsesivo por hacer lo correcto y eso parece ser un karma que debe sufrir; su vital característica es que es una buena persona, es un hombre sencillo, tranquilo, pero creo que como dije, su necesidad de ser correcto crea en él una presión que lo lleva a una silenciosa depresión que posiblemente vea superada al momento de conocer a "Seo-rae", ella complementa o le da un nuevo sentido a su vida y eso se nota con un simple gesto al saludar a sus compañeros de trabajo; es una buena actuación.

The screenplay written by Park himself demonstrates how this type of film can go deeper where it uses romance which is the perfect complement to a crime story; possibly this film in the hands of another screenwriter could focus on the relationship of the two main characters in a passionate relationship, full of debauchery that leads them down a path with many difficulties without a pleasant ending, but what is done by Park shows that two people with different lives can connect and forge a relationship where understanding is paramount, along with trust and support between them; just that is the basis of this story and makes everything else work as it is the themes of investigation, mystery, humor and drama.

The performances are an important factor of the film; the work done by Tang Wei as "Song Seo-rae", I thought it was excellent; her beauty and simplicity gives a special touch to her character because she can go unnoticed anywhere, but if you get to notice her presence you will discover how beautiful she is; I liked that she was perceived by some as a victim, but in reality she is a survivor, a very intelligent, determined, strong woman, but at the same time sad and lonely; she is a good character and Tang's acting is perfect for the role she has to practice. The acting of Park Hae-il is very good; I like how his character was written and of course how he plays it; the detective "Jang Hae-jun" is a man determined and focused on his job; he seems to be obsessive about doing the right thing and that seems to be a karma he must suffer; his vital characteristic is that he is a good person, he is a simple, quiet man, but I think that as I said, his need to be right creates in him a pressure that leads him to a silent depression that he may see overcome when he meets "Seo-rae", she complements or gives a new meaning to his life and that is noticeable with a simple gesture when greeting his coworkers; it is a good performance.

No hay duda de que Decision to Leave es una de las mejores películas del pasado año y que debió obtener reconocimiento por el trabajo no solo de su director y guionista, Park Chan-wook, sino por los dos actores que protagonizan el film, edición, música, cinematografía, en fin por muchas categorías pudo ser nominada y en vez de eso fue complemente olvidada. Personalmente, creo que el cine asiático es un lugar donde cada vez más se debería ver porque desde hace varios años nos dan historias muy bien hechas que pueden tocar temas profundos como la tristeza, el desamor, la confianza, la presión y miedo del cambio, la responsabilidad, hay muchas historias que tienen una gran narración, actuación, dirección y lo que se percibe de esta producción es justamente eso y repito, es una lástima que no obtenga la promoción que se merece. Siempre he dicho que no soy un fan del género del romance, pero la manera en que Park realizó está película, narró la historia de estos personajes, me hace pensar que es perfecta, me gusta cada demostración de comprensión que tiene sus dos protagonistas y que la creencia de uno de ellos, puede privar de sentir una nueva felicidad, pero como dije anteriormente, la responsabilidad o obligaciones es algo que se convierte en presión y evita que estos personajes sean libres de expresar sus emociones; todo eso me deja está gran película, la cual disfrute por completo y espero que tengan la oportunidad de verla y disfrutarla tal como yo lo hice.

There is no doubt that Decision to Leave is one of the best films of last year and should have been recognized not only for the work of its director and screenwriter, Park Chan-wook, but also for the two actors who star in the film, editing, music, cinematography, in short, for many categories it could have been nominated and instead it was completely forgotten. Personally, I think Asian cinema is a place where more and more should be seen because for several years they have been giving us very well made stories that can touch deep themes such as sadness, heartbreak, trust, pressure and fear of change, responsibility, there are many stories that have great storytelling, acting, direction and what is perceived from this production is just that and I repeat, it is a pity that it does not get the promotion it deserves. I have always said that I am not a fan of the romance genre, but the way Park made this movie, narrated the story of these characters, makes me think it is perfect, I like every demonstration of understanding that has its two main characters and that the belief of one of them, can deprive to feel a new happiness, but as I said before, the responsibility or obligations is something that becomes pressure and prevents these characters to be free to express their emotions; all that leaves me with this great movie, which I enjoyed completely and I hope you have the opportunity to see it and enjoy it as I did.
