“I’m here to learn how to avoid being raped”

Tenía un tiempo esperando por ver esta miniserie y aprovechando la oportunidad de la retransmisión de sus doce episodios por parte de HBO, decidí por fin ver una historia en la cual relata las diferentes situaciones que personas, en especial mujeres, deben sufrir a causa de la sexualización de la sociedad. En esta miniserie veremos la historia de "Arabella", una mujer de más de veinte años de edad quien consiguió la fama en Twitter y eso la hizo escribir su primer libro llamado "Chronicles of a Fed-Up Millennial" ; en la actualidad está sufriendo para poder escribir su segundo libro y eso la hace por momentos alejarse del mundo de la responsabilidad y entrar en uno que es pura diversión, pero justamente en uno de esos escapes de ser adulto, ella será víctima o tendrá la noción de haberse convertido en una porque después de una noche salvaje, tendrá recuerdos de un ataque y eso la hará atar cabos hasta descubrir una terrible verdad que cambiará su vida.

I had been waiting for a while to see this miniseries and taking the opportunity of the rebroadcast of its twelve episodes by HBO, I finally decided to see a story in which tells the different situations that people, especially women, must suffer because of the sexualization of society. In this miniseries we will see the story of "Arabella", a woman in her twenties who achieved fame on Twitter and that made her write her first book called "Chronicles of a Fed-Up Millennial" ; She is currently suffering to be able to write her second book and that makes her at times move away from the world of responsibility and enter one that is pure fun, but precisely in one of those escapes from being an adult, she will be a victim or will have the notion of having become one because after a wild night, she will have memories of an attack and that will make her tie up until she discovers a terrible truth that will change her life.

Está miniserie fue escrita, co-dirigida y protagonizada por Michaela Coel, ella hace un gran trabajo mostrando las diferentes facetas de vida de Arabella, momentos de su adolescencia, otros antes de sufrir el ataque y cómo debe lidiar con todo lo que lamentablemente le sucede; para eso Coel muestra diferentes estilos, escenarios y colores, dependiendo el lugar en dónde son cada escena , eso es algo que me gustó porque todo depende del momento que vive este personaje, desde tener una vida llena de disfrute a después vivir uno con tristeza, miedo y una valentía llena de rabia y es que aparte de la muy buena dirección de los episodios, la historia es sin duda lo mejor de esta producción; todo lo que le sucede a Arabella y sus amigos pienso que le puede suceder a cualquiera y creo que no sentía tanta preocupación como desde el momento que ví la serie "Euphoria"; en esta historia de doce episodos vemos como el tema sexual es relatado desde diferentes puntos de vista, de como personas se favorecen de todo lo referente a lo sexual para obtener poder sobre otros, vías para volver un objeto a una persona solo para satisfacer sus retorcidas necesidades y no para el disfrute de quienes estén envueltos en ese acto. Cada descubrimiento de lo sucedido crea una reacción en estos personajes y eso hace que podamos tener escenas tristes, fuertes, crudas y hasta cómicas, vuelvo con el tema de la comedia porque en esta ocasión no es base de la historia, sino un mecanismo de defensa para poder enfrentar una grave situación, creo que todos tenemos esa relación de sufrir o ver a alguien padecer de un evento traumático y tener la reacción de usar cualquier medio para hacer reír y no digo de que en esta historia se cómica o cree una burla sobre un hecho lamentable cómo es una violación, sino que muestra como por momentos buscamos minimizar hechos tristes con tan solo buscar algo que nos haga reír; en realidad pienso que está historia está muy bien escrita, desarrollada porque no esconde nada porque trata por momentos temas como la infidelidad, racismo, homosexualidad, feminismo, machismo, abuso de drogas y abuso sexual, pero a todo esto también desarrolla temas como compresión, valor, amistad, compañerismo, superación, todos motivos para vivir, para ser fuerte y sobreviviente.

This miniseries was written, co-directed and starred by Michaela Coel, she does a great job showing the different facets of Arabella's life, moments of her adolescence, others before suffering the attack and how she must deal with everything that unfortunately happens to her; for that Coel shows different styles, sceneries and colors, depending on the place where each scene is, that's something I liked because everything depends on the moment this character lives, from having a life full of enjoyment to later living one with sadness, fear and a bravery full of rage and apart from the very good direction of the episodes, the story is undoubtedly the best of this production; Everything that happens to Arabella and her friends I think it can happen to anyone and I think I did not feel so much concern as from the moment I saw the series "Euphoria"; in this story of twelve episodes we see how the sexual theme is told from different points of view, how people take advantage of everything related to sexual matters to gain power over others, ways to turn a person into an object just to satisfy their twisted needs and not for the enjoyment of those involved in that act. Each discovery of what happened creates a reaction in these characters and that makes that we can have sad, strong, raw and even funny scenes, I return to the theme of comedy because this time it is not the basis of the story, but a defense mechanism to cope with a serious situation, I think we all have that relationship of suffering or seeing someone suffer from a traumatic event and have the reaction to use any means to make people laugh and I am not saying that this story is comical or creates a mockery of a regrettable event such as a rape, but it shows how at times we seek to minimize sad events by just looking for something to make us laugh; I really think that this story is very well written, developed because it does not hide anything because it deals at times with issues such as infidelity, racism, homosexuality, feminism, sexism, drug abuse and sexual abuse, but also develops themes such as understanding, courage, friendship, companionship, overcoming, all reasons to live, to be strong and survive.

La actuación de Michaela es excelente, como dije anteriormente, está miniserie pasa diferente facetas de "Arabella" y las que debe interpretar está actriz es algo muy bien hecho; me gusta que primeramente haga de una mujer que disfruta el mejor momento de su vida, que sea completamente feliz y que parece que tiene todo el control y sí eso la hace disfrutar de momentos en dónde llega a un extremo o más allá, pero creo que al mostrar esa faceta no es para ser juzgada sino para ver cómo un hecho como una violación puede destruir la vida de una persona; ya cuando tiene que hacer frente a lo ocurrido como la negación, acepta el hecho de que fue violada, sentirse culpable, recibir el apoyo de sus seres queridos, de tener valor y alzar su voz, hasta después encontrar una verdadera vía de denuncia y ayuda y con todas esas facetas pienso que Coel hace un excelente trabajo porque siente en realidad todos esos obstáculos, la lucha para superarlos cada uno para por fin sentirse curada, me sorprendió gratamente su trabajo y espero muy pronto poder ver otros proyectos en dónde pueda tratar temas tan verdades y crudos como los que vemos en esta miniserie. De sus co-protagonistas, Weruche Opia que interpreta a "Terry" la mejor amiga de "Arabella", para mí ella es como un tipo de héroe, ella siempre está ahí para apoyar y ayudar de forma incondicional a su amiga y eso hace que aporte la comedia a la historia aunque habrá momentos en dónde deba descubrir cosas por ella misma y deba encontrar valor para hacer frente a lo que ha vivido; su actuación es exepcional, es muy buena; también debo nombrar a Paapa Essiedu como "Kwame", a pesar de tener breves escenas, creo que sí historia personal está a la par de lo que sucede a Arabella, la situación que vive por cómo tiene una gran actividad sexual lo hace experimentar hechos lamentables en donde de forma inesperada lo hace convertirse en una víctima, su actuación va de mostrar ser una persona fuerte a pasar a ser una contrariada y después una en donde tiene control y calma; con todo esto debo decir que cada uno de estos personajes tienen un problema de atención y usan la sexualidad para poder sentirse amados y queridos y eso los lleva a caer en la trampa de otros que también usan la sexualidad, pero de una manera errada, mala.

The performance of Michaela is excellent, as I said before, this miniseries shows different facets of "Arabella" and the ones that this actress has to play is very well done; I like that first of all she plays a woman who enjoys the best moment of her life, who is completely happy and seems to have all the control and yes that makes her enjoy moments where she goes to an extreme or beyond, but I think that by showing that facet is not to be judged but to see how an event like a rape can destroy the life of a person; When she has to face what happened as denial, accept the fact that she was raped, feel guilty, receive the support of her loved ones, to have courage and raise her voice, until then find a real way to denounce and help and with all these facets I think that Coel does an excellent job because she really feels all these obstacles, the struggle to overcome each one to finally feel healed, I was pleasantly surprised by her work and I hope very soon to see other projects where she can deal with issues as true and raw as the ones we see in this miniseries. Of her co-stars, Weruche Opia who plays "Terry" the best friend of "Arabella", for me she is like a kind of hero, she is always there to support and help unconditionally her friend and that makes her bring comedy to the story although there will be moments where she must discover things by herself and must find courage to face what she has lived; her performance is exceptional, she is very good; I must also mention Paapa Essiedu as "Kwame", in spite of having brief scenes, I think that his personal story is on par with what happens to Arabella, the situation he lives because of how he has a great sexual activity makes him experience regrettable events where unexpectedly makes him become a victim, his performance goes from showing to be a strong person to become a disgruntled one and then one where he has control and calm; with all this I must say that each of these characters have a problem of attention and use sexuality to feel loved and wanted and that leads them to fall into the trap of others who also use sexuality, but in a wrong, bad way.

I May Destroy You es una de las mejores miniseries que he visto, me agrada cómo va relatando diferentes etapas que debe vivir una mujer después de ser víctima de una violación; lo resaltante de esta historia es como demuestra no solo como vive una víctima, sino lo que va sucediendo en su entorno, en amigos que no son amigos, en cómo debe afrontar a su trabajo, la explotación sobre la noticia de la violación, el hecho de enfrentar a su pareja, a sus padres, es algo con un gran peso emocional que muy difícilmente podrá una sola persona superar y que deberá recibir toda ayuda para que en algún momento puede no volver hacer la de antes, sino una versión mejor y así convertirse en una ayuda para otras que como ella puedan ser víctimas de depredadores y sus crueles prácticas; está es una historia que muchas personas deberían ver, pienso que es educativa, tanto para generaciones actuales como pasada y futuras, es alarmante, pienso que enseña a enfrentar muchas cosas, es una historia muy bien escrita y no me canso en decir eso porque en todos sus episodos podemos darnos cuenta que cualquiera puede estar en esa misma situación que sufre cualquiera de estos personajes y muchas veces podrán ver los signos de un peligro cuando ya es tarde. Para finalizar no diré que está es una historia para crear paranoia, sino para ser cuidadoso, para elegir bien a tus amistades, saber con quién te relacionas, nadie es libre de sufrir algún problema, sea grave o pequeño, solo que algunos pueden ser evitados de una u otra forma.

I May Destroy You is one of the best miniseries I have seen, I like how it tells the different stages that a woman has to go through after being a victim of rape; The highlight of this story is how it shows not only how a victim lives, but what is happening in her environment, in friends who are not friends, how she must face her work, the exploitation of the news of the rape, the fact of facing her partner, her parents, it is something with a great emotional weight that is very difficult for a single person to overcome and that she must receive all the help so that at some point she can not become the one she was before, but a better version and thus become a help for others who like her may be victims of predators and their cruel practices; this is a story that many people should see, I think it is educational, both for current, past and future generations, it is alarming, I think it teaches to face many things, it is a very well written story and I never tire of saying that because in all its episodes we can realize that anyone can be in the same situation that any of these characters suffer and many times they can see the signs of danger when it is too late. Finally, I will not say that this is a story to create paranoia, but to be careful, to choose your friends well, to know with whom you relate, no one is free to suffer any problem, whether serious or small, only that some can be avoided in one way or another.
