Invincible (Season 4) - Series Review [ES - EN]

En el primer trimestre del año, el servicio de streaming de Prime Video estrenó la cuarta temporada de la que considero una de las mejores series basadas en un cómic, "Invincible". En esta nueva etapa explora diferentes situaciones de sus personajes, y hablo en plural porque en esta oportunidad el protagonismo no solo estará enfocado en "Mark Grayson/Invincible", sino en muchos otros, como por ejemplo el personaje de Nolan, quien inevitablemente deberá hacer frente a quienes él les hizo un irreparable daño, lo cual hará que su camino hacia la redención comience a tener significado; a eso también sumo la introducción de nuevos personajes que generan un impacto tan importante que cambiarán por completo la narrativa del joven héroe que debería ser el protector de la Tierra.

In the first quarter of the year, the Prime Video streaming service premiered the fourth season of what I consider one of the best comic-based series, "Invincible". This new season explores different situations involving its characters—and I say “characters” in the plural because this time the focus isn’t just on “Mark Grayson/Invincible,” but on many others as well, such as the character Nolan, who will inevitably have to confront those he has irreparably harmed, a process that will give meaning to his path toward redemption; I’d also add the introduction of new characters who make such a significant impact that they’ll completely change the narrative of the young hero who is supposed to be Earth’s protector.

Los primeros tres episodios funcionaron como un puente, primeramente para el relato del tema principal de la cuarta temporada y lo que seguramente sea el tema a desarrollar en la próxima, la cual ya está confirmada. Esas decisiones de tratar de abarcar diferentes tramas seguramente funcionen mejor en los cómics, en donde se pueden extender mucho más, pero en la versión de serie, contar con tan solo 8 episodios es donde se nota lo apresurado y hasta en momentos inconcluso de diferentes sucesos que pueden o no ser importantes para el protagonista, aunque de igual manera en esta temporada se encontró solución a finiquitar ciertas tramas usando a personajes secundarios.

The first three episodes served as a bridge, first to the main storyline of Season 4 and to what will likely be the storyline for the next season, which has already been confirmed. These decisions to try to cover different storylines likely work better in the comics, where they can be expanded much further, but in the TV series version, with only eight episodes, it’s evident how rushed—and at times even unresolved—various events feel, whether or not they’re important to the protagonist. That said, this season did find a way to wrap up certain storylines by using secondary characters.

El tema principal en esta temporada se basa en la llamada Guerra Viltrumita; ese suceso que ya se estaba desarrollando en las anteriores temporadas por fin se lleva a cabo gracias a la formación de la Coalición de Planetas para hacer frente al Imperio Viltrumita. Ese grupo de guerreros ofrece la oportunidad de que nuevos personajes tengan protagonismo en la historia, en especial Nolan, quien tiene la oportunidad de comenzar su viaje a la redención, un viaje lleno de equivocaciones y de buena voluntad, pero con un resultado nada favorable por sus acciones imperdonables; pero de igual manera sabe que tiene una oportunidad en demostrar a quien verdaderamente ama que está dispuesto a resarcir todo daño hecho hacia ellos; en mi opinión, el enfocarse en este personaje fue la mejor decisión para esa temporada.

The main theme of this season revolves around the so-called Viltrumite War; this event, which had already been building in previous seasons, finally comes to a head thanks to the formation of the Planetary Coalition to confront the Viltrumite Empire. This group of warriors provides an opportunity for new characters to take center stage in the story, especially Nolan, who gets the chance to begin his journey toward redemption—a journey filled with mistakes and good intentions, but with an unfavorable outcome due to his unforgivable actions; yet he knows he has a chance to prove to those he truly loves that he’s willing to make amends for all the harm he’s caused them; In my opinion, focusing on this character was the best decision for that season.

La historia es fascinante y más cuando relata la historia de los Viltrumitas como una raza guerrera, superior, dispuesta a dominar el universo, lo cual, desde su imagen de ser poderosos, les permitió vulnerabilidad. Todo ese relato del pasado y lo que ha generado en el presente es perfecto y encaja muy bien en la manera en que Mark siente que su lado alienígena está en toda razón en el momento de imponer justicia y orden, porque mientras él cree que dejando de lado su humanidad le hará más fuerte, ve que su padre ha decidido que lo que ha vivido en la Tierra lo define y por eso necesita acabar con todo lo que fue anteriormente, un plan formidable, pero que podrá generar graves e irreparables problemas en el futuro. Uno de los problemas, en realidad el gran problema a enfrentar en esta temporada y en las siguientes, es la gran aparición de Gran Regente Thragg, el verdadero antagonista de la historia, quien impacta con su gran poder. Es un gran y vil personaje que disfruté en cada momento que entraba en escena; es igual de divertido, malvado y convincente tal como lo fue "Conquest". Sus diálogos son elocuentes; aunque no raya en la locura, sí lo es mucho más convincente y eso es a causa del poder que irradia; no hay duda de que es un gran personaje.

The story is fascinating, especially when it portrays the Viltrumites as a warrior race—superior and determined to dominate the universe—which, despite their image of power, left them vulnerable. This entire narrative of the past and its consequences in the present is perfect and aligns very well with how Mark feels that his alien side is entirely justified in imposing justice and order, because while he believes that setting aside his humanity will make him stronger, he sees that his father has decided that his experiences on Earth define him—and that’s why he needs to eradicate everything he once was. It’s a formidable plan, but one that could lead to serious and irreparable problems in the future. One of the problems—in fact, the major problem to be faced this season and in the ones to come—is the grand appearance of Grand Regent Thragg, the true antagonist of the story, who makes a striking impression with his immense power. He’s a great and villainous character whom I enjoyed every time he appeared on screen; he’s just as entertaining, evil, and convincing as “Conquest” was. His dialogue is eloquent; while he doesn’t border on madness, he is much more convincing—and that’s because of the power he radiates; there’s no doubt he’s a great character.

La cuarta temporada presenta los problemas narrativos de abarcar mucho en el principio para después enfocarse en la trama principal de la temporada; diferentes usos de personajes que al principio se puede pensar que no tienen relevancia en la historia, pero después es entendible su uso porque funciona en el desarrollo del personaje principal; mi crítica hace referencia a que esos sucesos toman tiempo valioso porque equivalen hasta a 4 episodios, como sucede en esta temporada, para después dejar los cuatro últimos en el tema principal y, repito, se abarca mucho, se siente apresurado, sobrecargado y posiblemente sumando uno o dos episodios más se pueda dar un mejor impacto, pero creo que ese será el ritmo de la serie hasta el final y solo habrá que ver cómo siguen manejando cada amenaza para hacer ver a Mark como INVINCIBLE.

The fourth season faces narrative challenges in trying to cover too much ground at the beginning before shifting focus to the season’s main plot; characters are used in ways that may initially seem irrelevant to the story, but their role later becomes clear because it contributes to the main character’s development; my criticism is that these events take up valuable time—equivalent to as many as four episodes, as is the case this season—only to then devote the final four to the main storyline. And, I repeat, it covers too much ground; it feels rushed and overloaded. Perhaps adding one or two more episodes could have made a stronger impact, but I think that will be the pace of the series until the end, and we’ll just have to see how they continue to handle each threat to make Mark look INVINCIBLE.
