Joy Ride - Movie Review [ES - EN]

De las muchas películas de comedias que he visto, diré que mis gustos son por producciones en dónde se caracterizan por tener chistes tontos, comedia física, situaciones locas, algunas políticamente incorrectas, películas en su mayoría protagonizadas por hombres porque para estas historias, son lo que tiene la posibilidad de experimentar locuras; creo que es eso lo que me ha hecho ver pocas películas cómicas lideradas por mujeres, pero eso no ha evitado que las pocas películas que he visto, las considere malas, por ejemplo puedo nombrar "Scary Movie" y "The Sweetest Thing" como un claro ejemplo de films en dónde la comedia es física, con bromas asquerosas, situaciones extrañas, cómicas y exageradas, producciones con las características que me gustan ver en una comedia, protagonizadas por mujeres y justamente eso es lo que me impulsó de ver el film al que reseño en esta publicación.

Of the many comedy movies I have seen, I will say that the ones I like the most are productions where they are characterized by silly jokes, physical comedy, crazy situations, some politically incorrect, movies mostly starring men because for these stories, they are what has the possibility to experience craziness; I think that's what has made me see few comic films led by women, but that has not prevented that the few films I've seen, I consider them bad, for example I can name "Scary Movie" and "The Sweetest Thing" as a clear example of films where the comedy is physical, with gross jokes, strange, funny and exaggerated situations, productions with the characteristics that I like to see in a comedy, starring women and that's exactly what prompted me to see the film that I review in this publication.

"Joy Ride", es una comedia que relata la historia de "Audrey" y "Lolo"; que desde temprana edad forjan una gran amistad por el hecho de ser chinas; ambas amigas con personalidades diferentes, deben enfrentar ciertas situaciones, en especial Audrey que al ser adoptada por una pareja blanca, siente que no pertenece a ningun mundo, justamente es eso lo que motiva a Audrey de resaltar siempre en todo lo que hace porque necesita la aprobación de otros, cosa contraria que su amiga Lolo, que vive de una manera muy diferente, con poca responsabilidad y sin importar mucho del futuro; a pesar de sus diferencias, ambas se complementan muy bien y más cuando Audrey necesita del conocimiento de la cultura China que tiene Lolo en su viaje a China para cerrar un gran contrato del bufete de abogados en dónde ella trabaja; este viaje no será solo entre ellas dos porque las acompañaran "Kat Huang", amiga de la universidad de Audrey y "Deadeye", prima de Lolo; un viaje originalmente de negocios que se convertirá en una misión en descubrir el origen de Audrey y eso las hará experimentar situaciones cómicas e hilarantes.

"Joy Ride", is a comedy that tells the story of "Audrey" and "Lolo", who from an early age forge a great friendship because they are Chinese. Both friends with different personalities, they must face certain situations, especially Audrey who, being adopted by a white couple, feels that she does not belong to any world, that is precisely what motivates Audrey to always stand out in everything she does because she needs the approval of others, contrary to her friend Lolo, who lives in a very different way, with little responsibility and without caring much about the future; Despite their differences, both complement each other very well and even more when Audrey needs the knowledge of Chinese culture that Lolo has in her trip to China to close a big contract for the law firm where she works; this trip will not be only between the two of them because they will be accompanied by "Kat Huang", Audrey's college friend and "Deadeye", Lolo's cousin; an originally business trip that will become a mission to discover Audrey's origin and that will make them experience funny and hilarious situations.

Este film significó el estreno en la dirección de Adele Lim, quien es reconocida por ser la guionista de "Crazy Rich Asians" y "Raya and the Last Dragon"; nunca trato de ser breve con mi explicación del desempeño en la dirección de un film, pero en esta oportunidad debo serlo y es que no encontré nada destacable en el trabajo de Lim en su primera vez detrás de las cámaras; puedo decir que su función es correcta al cumplir en diferentes aspectos como realizar tomas explorando la perspectiva tanto de los personajes como de los espectadores; lo otro que considero correcto es en las escenas de comedia en dónde se nota influencia de otras producciones, cumple con clichés por ejemplo el uso de diferentes tomas rápidas en una o diferentes situaciones en dónde estén involucradas las cuatro protagonistas; en mi opinión no es lo más destacable del film.

El guion está escrito por Cherry Chevapravatdumrong y Teresa Hsiao; ambas escritoras son reconocidas por su trabajo en "Family Guy"; también debo decir que Hsiao también trabajo en la otra serie animada de Seth MacFarlane, "American Dad!" y en la serie "Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens"; estas dos mujeres crearon situaciones cómicas que me gustaron, hay varias en específico que son excelentes y en algunas escenas se nota la influencia de las series antes descrita, pero la historia en sí no es solo de comedia sino de representación de una cultura, en este caso, cultura China y de como es percibida para los Chinos-Americanos y por supuesto para los Chinos. Me gustó que se tome el tiempo en explorar un tema que seguro es recurrente en Estados Unidos sobre la adopción de niños asiáticos y todo lo referente a si es necesario explorar sus verdaderos orígenes; creo que la motivación principal para el desarrollo de la historia es lo mejor del film junto a varias situaciones cómicas las cuales están muy bien desarrolladas para cuando sea el momento del punch line impacten.

This film was the directorial debut of Adele Lim, who is known for being the screenwriter of "Crazy Rich Asians" and "Raya and the Last Dragon"; I never try to be brief with my explanation of the performance in the direction of a film, but in this opportunity I must be and I found nothing remarkable in the work of Lim in her first time behind the cameras; I can say that his role is correct in fulfilling different aspects such as making shots exploring the perspective of both the characters and the viewers; the other thing that I consider correct is in the comedy scenes where you can see the influence of other productions, he complies with clichés for example the use of different quick shots in one or different situations where the four protagonists are involved; in my opinion it is not the most remarkable of the film.

The script is written by Cherry Chevapravatdumrong and Teresa Hsiao; both writers are recognized for their work on "Family Guy"; I should also say that Hsiao also worked on Seth MacFarlane's other animated series, "American Dad!" and in the series "Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens"; these two women created comic situations that I liked, there are several in specific that are excellent and in some scenes you can notice the influence of the series described above, but the story itself is not only of comedy but of representation of a culture, in this case, Chinese culture and how it is perceived for Chinese-Americans and of course for Chinese people. I liked that it takes the time to explore a topic that I'm sure is recurrent in the United States about the adoption of Asian children and everything related to whether it is necessary to explore their true origins; I think the main motivation for the development of the story is the best of the film along with several comic situations which are very well developed for when it's time for the punch line to make an impact.

Las actuaciones son normales, no son para destacar y alabar a todas, me gustan como están creadas porque cada una de las cuatro protagonistas cumplen con el cliché de este tipo de historias, por ejemplo "Audrey", protagonista principal, Interpretada por Ashley Park, es una mujer profesional, hermosa, inteligente, pero al no encajar en ningún mundo le crea desconfianza en sí misma y no le hace avanzar, "Lolo" que en mi opinión debió ser mejor interpretada por Sherry Cola, creo que su personaje no fue escrito para ella, sino para Awkwafina y es que no dejaba de pensar que la actitud de su personaje estaba más orientado a lo que ha demostrado esa actriz en otras producciones, el personaje que menos me gustó de la película, lo otro fue que al estar Stephanie Hsu como "Kat", creo que no había necesidad de "Lola" y eso es debido a que Kat la opaca completamente, son muy parecidas y creo que ambas se pudo escribir e interpretar mejor; por último, mi personaje favorito, la mejor de las cuatro, "Deadeye" Interpretada por Sabrina Wu, en mi opinión y salvando las diferencias, ella es la versión femenina de "Alan", me hizo reír mucho, creo que es la que conecta a todo el grupo y de no esperar nada de su personaje, es la más importante de todas.

The performances are normal, they are not to highlight and praise them all, I like how they are created because each of the four protagonists are part of the cliché of this type of stories, for example "Audrey", main protagonist, Played by Ashley Park, is a professional, beautiful, intelligent woman, but not fitting in any world creates self-doubt and does not make her move forward, "Lolo" who in my opinion should have been better played by Sherry Cola, I think her character was not written for her, but for Awkwafina and I kept thinking that her character's attitude was more oriented to what that actress has shown in other productions, the character I liked the least in the movie, the other thing was that with Stephanie Hsu as "Kat", I think there was no need for "Lola" and that is because Kat completely overshadows her, they are very similar and I think both could have been written and interpreted better; finally, my favorite character, the best of the four, "Deadeye" Played by Sabrina Wu, in my opinion and saving the differences, she is the female version of "Alan", she made me laugh a lot, I think she is the one that connects the whole group and not to expect anything from her character, she is the most important of all.

A pesar de que "Joy Ride" no es el mejor film, ya que tiene varios fallos, como por ejemplo el definir los motivos o dar mejor desarrollo a algunas de sus protagonistas o el tener un mejor cierre, debo decir que me entretuvo bastante, me hizo reír con muchas de las ocurrencias de sus personajes y eso lo valoro mucho en una comedia; no es el hecho solamente de crear una sonrisa sino carcajadas y eso lo experimente al ver esta historia con buenos momentos cómicos, simples y sencillos y otros en dónde se ríe de lo referente a la cultura de una nación, de lo correcto políticamente que se ha convertido la sociedad, pero no es solamente la comedia, sino que demuestra sin ser imponente, lo referente al empoderamiento de la mujer, algo muy bien hecho en este film; también trata de muy buena manera temas como la adopción y la amistad lo cual me ha gustado y creo que en eso se hace un buen balance en la historia. Este es un film regular, pero entretenido y eso algunas veces no se percibe en muchas películas, por eso si quieren ver una historia corta, directa, divertida, recomiendo este "Road Movie" liderado por Mujeres.

Although "Joy Ride " is not the best film, as it has several flaws, such as defining the motives or giving better development to some of its protagonists or having a better closing, I must say that I was quite entertained, it made me laugh with many of the occurrences of its characters and I value that very much in a comedy; It is not only the fact of creating a smile but laughter and I experienced that when watching this story with good comic moments, simple and simple and others where it laughs about the culture of a nation, how politically correct society has become, but it is not only the comedy, but it shows without being imposing, the empowerment of women, something very well done in this film; it also deals very well with issues such as adoption and friendship which I liked and I think that makes a good balance in the story. This is a regular film, but entertaining and that sometimes is not perceived in many films, so if you want to see a short, direct, funny story, I recommend this "Road Movie" led by women.
