A principio de este año, el cineasta mexicano Guillermo del Toro hablo sobre cómo el cine surgió después de experimentar una época muy dura a causa de la pandemia; alabó el hecho de que el pasado año hubo momentos para grandes, pequeñas y en sus palabras, hasta intimas producciones, pero también hizo referencia a un estilo o género como es el de la animación; del Toro para cerrar su opinión dejó claro de que la animación que es una manera de hacer cine para todo público y no solamente para niños y creo que en este año, muchos de los films que compiten por los grandes premios al cine más que nada están referidos para cada que quien esté dispuesto a ver más que un diseño de un personaje, que están dispuestos a disfrutar de historias que pueden conectar con quién sea.

Earlier this year, Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro spoke about how cinema emerged after experiencing a very hard time because of the pandemic; he praised the fact that last year there were moments for big, small and in his words, even intimate productions, but he also made reference to a style or genre such as animation; Del Toro closed his opinion by making it clear that animation is a way of making films for all audiences and not just for children and I think that this year, many of the films competing for the big film awards are more than anything else, they are aimed at those who are willing to see more than a character design, who are willing to enjoy stories that can connect with whoever they are.

"Marcel the Shell with Shoes On" es un film estrenado el pasado año, el cual usa la animación de stop-motion junto a escenografías reales para relatar la historia de "Marcel", una concha marina quien vive junto a su abuela "Connie" (otra concha marina), en un hogar que pareciera estar abandonado, pero un día con la llegada de un nuevo inquilino llamado "Dean", sus vidas cambiarán porque este nuevo amigo tendrá la maravillosa idea de documentar la vida de este pequeño ser; justamente esa idea de mostrar la vida de Marcel al mundo, le dará posibilidades de ser motivado a descubrir y conocer el mundo, salir de esa zona de confort, de no tener más excusa y así poder finalmente crecer.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On" is a film released last year, which uses stop-motion animation with real scenery to tell the story of "Marcel", a sea shell who lives with his grandmother "Connie" (another sea shell), in a home that seems to be abandoned, but one day with the arrival of a new tenant named "Dean", their lives will change because this new friend will have the wonderful idea of documenting the life of this little being; Just this idea of showing Marcel's life to the world, will give him the possibility to be motivated to discover and know the world, to get out of his comfort zone, to have no more excuses and to finally grow up.

Este film está basado en una serie de tres cortos los cuales se estrenaron entre los años 2010-2014 y los cuales fueron dirigidos por Dean Fleischer Camp, el cual es un director que su carrera está regida por shorts films y películas para TV y que con esta producción se convierte en la primera vez que dirige un largometraje. En esta oportunidad pareciera que hace un trabajo simple, pero en mi opinión es muy detallista y eso es debido a lo muy pequeño de su personaje principal y eso hace que debemos estar pendiente de cada ocurrencia de Marcel.

La historia es lo que más me ha gustado, me parece genial como usan algo tan poco real para relatar una hermosa historia sobre un ser que tiene el potencial de hacer cosas maravillosas para él y para quien quiera estar a su lado; es un genial y muy bien realizado coming of age. Me gusta la manera del trato que se da sobre cómo prepararse a dar un paso adelante y salir de una zona de confort, dejar atrás una o varias excusas que pueden retraer una etapa de madurez necesaria para enfrentar al mundo, prepararte mejor para enfrentar cualquier situación, sea mala o buena.

This film is based on a series of three short films which were released between 2010-2014 and which were directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, which is a director whose career is ruled by shorts films and TV movies and with this production becomes the first time he directs a feature film. In this opportunity he seems to do a simple job, but in my opinion it is very detailed and that is due to the very small of his main character and that makes that we must be aware of every occurrence of Marcel.

The story is what I liked the most, I think it's great how they use something so unreal to tell a beautiful story about a being that has the potential to do wonderful things for him and for whoever wants to be by his side; it's a great and very well done coming of age. I like the way the treatment is given about how to prepare yourself to take a step forward and get out of a comfort zone, to leave behind one or more excuses that can retract a stage of maturity necessary to face the world, to better prepare yourself to face any situation, whether bad or good.

La animación es excelente, no trata de innovar o revolucionar lo hecho en lo que es el stop-motion, pero eso no significa que el diseño de "Marcel" y "Connie" sean muy buenos. La película en sí al usar escenografías reales hace que el trabajo se vea fácil al principio, porque después hay un mayor dificultad y pienso que fue inteligente usar esas pocas escenas en el último acto aunque es perfecto para la historia porque de esa manera nos enfocamos en cómo es Marcel y lo que representa para este film y eso sí que me gustó; me pareció genial mostrar a un personaje tan pequeño, pero decidido, valiente, leal, no filtros, muy directo y creo que eso lo hace ser tan auténtico; en una parte del film tiene un diálogo muy importante la cual él se acepta y ama por lo que es y eso me pareció tan poderoso aunque sí, es un personaje con cierto miedo y eso es causado por el trauma de haber perdido tanto, pero al final existe esa demostración de entendimiento y fuerza que hace que sea conmovedor saber que está preparado para dar un siguiente paso.

The animation is excellent, it doesn't try to innovate or revolutionize what is done in stop-motion, but that doesn't mean that the design of "Marcel" and "Connie" are very good. The film itself by using real scenery makes the work look easy at the beginning, because later there is a greater difficulty and I think it was smart to use those few scenes in the last act although it is perfect for the story because that way we focus on how Marcel is and what he represents for this film and I really liked that; I thought it was great to show a character so small, but determined, brave, loyal, not filters, very direct and I think that makes him so authentic; in one part of the film he has a very important dialogue in which he accepts and loves himself for who he is and I found that so powerful although yes, he is a character with some fear and that is caused by the trauma of having lost so much, but in the end there is that demonstration of understanding and strength that makes it touching to know that he is ready to take the next step.

Posiblemente, vean o sientan que este film no es para niños y creo que posiblemente eso sea cierto aunque en mi opinión, es un film familiar, una historia que pregona valores correctos, enseña muchas cosas en dónde primeramente es la presión y temor de crecer, de perder la motivación para seguir adelante, de alcanzar un verdadero potencial y eso es algo muy importante tanto para los adultos como para los adolescentes; también enseña el comprender muchas cosas, como es la confianza, la necesidad de pedir ayuda y de aprender de vivencias o experiencias de otras personas; en realidad que este simple film es muy bueno, es directo, es una buena historia muy bien escrita, dirigida, con personajes muy especiales y aunque sé que seguramente no ganen en los próximos Premios a la Academia, en mi opinión deben ver Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.

Possibly, you see or feel that this film is not for children and I think that may be true but in my opinion, it is a family film, a story that proclaims correct values, teaches many things where first of all is the pressure and fear of growing up, of losing the motivation to move forward, to reach a true potential and that is something very important for both adults and adolescents; It also teaches to understand many things, such as trust, the need to ask for help and to learn from other people's experiences; in reality this simple film is very good, it is direct, it is a good story very well written, directed, with very special characters and although I know that surely it will not win in the next Academy Awards, in my opinion you must see Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.
