The MCU once again attempts to use horror to tell some of its stories with the premiere of the miniseries "Marvel Zombies," which consists of four episodes and serves as an extension or spin-off of the fifth episode of the first season of the animated series "What If. . It shows an alternate universe where, instead of falling to Thanos' invasion, Earth is destroyed by a zombie attack, as the infected include Earth's most powerful heroes. However, hope for salvation remains in the few survivors who must face this difficult threat. That episode ended with an excellent cliffhanger, which inevitably led to thoughts of developing a story that would expand the battle between heroes and zombies.

After four years, Marvel Animation released the very short miniseries that expands the universe in which the heroes of that comic book house must fight against The Avengers infected by a zombie virus. As I said before, the episode that kicked off the story of that universe ended with a major cliffhanger, although the reality was that the great threat did not come from space, but from a well-known and very powerful hero who, upon being infected, decides that the world is not enough and that it is time to expand his control using his hungry creatures. In my opinion, and without having read the original material on which this miniseries is based, I think this is the most appropriate approach, since, as is well known, with such powerful characters, it is to be expected that the hope for salvation may be slim or even non-existent; this characteristic is something I have always considered relevant in stories related to zombies.

Regarding the characters chosen to star in this story, I think they were all perfect, although it is true that once again the usual few are used to lead an MCU production. Unfortunately, the rejection that many of the current productions in this franchise have faced with regard to the characters chosen and the actors who play them may be what affects the acceptance of loyal fans, but I think that having young characters is really the right thing to do because if the story is based on the hope of salvation, I think that having "Kate Bishop," Riri Williams, and Kamala Khan as the main characters is a very good idea, since their youth and inexperience allow them to connect better with other heroes who will have the opportunity to star in this story, such as the forgotten Xu Shang-Chi and the first appearance in the MCU of Blade with a mystical version.

Now, regarding the important part, the terror that this story offers, I think that unfortunately it becomes repetitive, and possibly that is inevitable because the mission that the protagonists must fulfill and the quality of the villain they must face means that there is always a chase. The problem is that there is no right moment to generate terror and take advantage of the zombies, regardless of how long they have been dominating the Earth and how few survivors there are. I think there are few scenes, or rather episodes, where there is the tension generated by the battle against zombies. For example, the first episode is good, as is the second episode, but both the third and last episodes become full-on action, which isn't bad and is mainly due to the resolution of this short story. I think that one or two more episodes would have possibly made the horror, use of zombies, and character development work better, regardless of how well-known they are.

I don't consider Marvel Zombies to be a bad production. It's very entertaining, quick to watch, and personally, I never had any issues with the animation style, which was the same as the one used in "What If...?" I really liked the action scenes and the use of powers with the zombified characters, although the humor is very exaggerated and cartoonish. It's strange to say this about an animated production, but I think it detracts from the personalities of the protagonists and also reduces the drama and tension in scenes where those characteristics are necessary. Another drawback is the plot holes, which can be considered a problem since this is a miniseries and not a series, and I think it's necessary to make a season that could be a sequel or prequel, possibly both, to further develop this story. I know that perfection does not exist, but the discussion of high quality in MCU productions has become a debate for critics and fans. However, I think this miniseries works in terms of entertainment, and if that was the main objective, then it achieved its goal, although it is true that its potential is impressive and, unfortunately, it was not reached in the four episodes that make it up.

How's the style of animation? Usually these things look really cheap and I just can't deal with it

To be honest, I didn't dislike the animation, as I think the zombie design works very well. The problem lies in the design of some of the (living) characters, which is completely misguided, due to the need to make them look like their live-action counterparts.

There are many scenes where the animation stands out, especially in the final battle, where I think a lot more of the budget was spent.

What I do have to say is that if you're demanding or expecting high-quality animation, you probably won't find it in this miniseries. Personally, I would have liked it to be done like X-Men '97, where 2D and 3D animation are combined.

Wow, how interesting! I haven't seen it, but I was left wanting more after watching the episode of What If...? The cliffhanger you mention about the infected superpowered hero must have been epic. I think it's super risky, but cool, that they use younger characters like Kate Bishop, Riri Williams, and Kamala Khan as protagonists. It gives it an air of “new hope” or of seeing normal people (well, with powers) dealing with something so extreme. And Blade appears in a mystical version! That alone sold me.

Four episodes seems like too few to me! Maybe with a couple more they could have developed the characters and that mix of horror and action better. Let's see if they decide to make that sequel/prequel you mention, because the premise sounds very powerful. Thanks for the summary, you've made me want to see it!

It's a fun and entertaining miniseries, a good follow-up to the episode of What If... ? It expands much further on what happens in that universe where zombies rule. I think another season will be confirmed, and I hope so because there are still many questions to be answered in this story.

I hope you get to see it soon. It's very quick, with four 24-minute episodes.
