On the Count of Three - Film Review [ESP - ENG]

Siempre he creído en una frase personal la cual es "Nunca es tarde para ver una película" no importa cuánto tiempo tenga de estrenada, cuántas personas ya la hayan hecho reseña, no importa porque siempre existe el momento perfecto para decidir cuando verlas; esto personalmente tiene como factor muchas cosas por ejemplo si hay una abrumadora opinión sobre esa producción lo cual me hace esperar a que el hype disminuya y así decido verla, otra es que nunca pensé en ver, pero por alguna razón, por ejemplo son trabajos anteriores de algún actor o actriz, director o guionista del cual tienen producciones actuales que me hayan gustado, entonces decido darles una oportunidad y también está ese gran factor el cual es la facilidad para poder ver películas independientes que pocas veces consiguen tener alguna compañía que facilite su distribución fuera de Norteamérica; justamente esta última es la que encaja en el principal factor que me hizo esperar por casi un año el ver el film a qué hago reseña en esta publicación.

I have always believed in a personal phrase which is "It's never too late to see a movie" no matter how long it has been released, how many people have already reviewed it, it doesn't matter because there is always the perfect time to decide when to see it; this personally has as a factor many things for example if there is an overwhelming opinion about that production which makes me wait for the hype to diminish and so I decide to see it, another is that I never thought of seeing it, but for some reason, for example they are previous works of some actor or actress, director or screenwriter of which they have current productions that I have liked, then I decide to give them a chance and there is also that great factor which is the ease to see independent films that rarely get to have a company that facilitates its distribution outside North America; precisely this last one is the one that fits in the main factor that made me wait for almost a year to see the film I am reviewing in this publication.

"On the Count of Three" tuvo un estreno primeramente en el Sundance Film Festival 2021, para después tener un estreno en salas de cine y en formato video on demand en abril del pasado año; en esta película veremos la historia de dos amigos, "Val" y "Kevin", los cuales tiene vidas diferentes, pero con una similitud la cual es los problemas causados por la depresión y justamente esa etapa oscura que están padeciendo por diferentes razones los llevará a tomar una decisión la cual los hará cumplir con diferentes tareas para al final del día terminar con su sufrimiento.

Esta es una de las películas que más quería ver en el pasado año y no es por quien trabaja en esta producción, ya que uno de sus protagonistas, Jerrod Carmichael, quién hace su debut en la dirección con este film. El desempeño de Carmichael detrás de cámara es muy bueno, la fotografía es especial y hay muchas tomas, las cuales no importa lo sencilla que sean, tienen cierta hermosura para el tema principal del film. Existen escenas impactantes y es que esta película al tratar el tema del suicidio, algunas escenas pueden ser difíciles de lidiar para ciertas personas porque son impactantes y muy reales, son escenas dramáticas y a la vez tristes, aunque existe en momentos esa pizca de esperanza que seguramente cada persona que es familiar de alguien que padece de pensamientos suicidas espera que ocurra para así no sufrir ninguna perdida; con esto quiero hacer una gran referencia al trabajo de Carmichael quien capta el padecimiento de los personajes lo cual es muy importante para el relato de esta historia.

"On the Count of Three" had a premiere first at the Sundance Film Festival 2021, and then had a theatrical and video on demand release in April last year; in this film we will see the story of two friends, "Val" and "Kevin", who have different lives, but with a similarity which is the problems caused by depression and precisely that dark stage that they are suffering for different reasons will lead them to make a decision which will make them fulfill different tasks to end their suffering at the end of the day.

This is one of the films I most wanted to see in the past year and it's not because of who works in this production, since one of its protagonists, Jerrod Carmichael, who makes his directorial debut with this film. Carmichael's performance behind the camera is very good, the photography is special and there are many shots, which no matter how simple they are, have a certain beauty for the main theme of the film. There are shocking scenes and this film deals with the theme of suicide, some scenes can be difficult to deal with for some people because they are shocking and very real, they are dramatic scenes and at the same time sad, although there is at times that bit of hope that surely every person who is a relative of someone who suffers from suicidal thoughts hopes that it will happen so as not to suffer any loss; with this I want to make a great reference to the work of Carmichael who captures the suffering of the characters which is very important for the story of this story.

El guion es escrito por Ari Katcher y Ryan Welch y es genial, hay muchos factores que destacó en esta historia de dos amigos que padecen por situaciones muy difíciles, primeramente debo hablar sobre el humor que existe entre estos personajes y es que demostrar una amistad de tantos años, les da la confianza para enfrentar de manera humorística la depresión que padecen, eso es algo palpable y que ayuda a disfrutar de esta historia; lo segundo es el apoyo que se tienen entre ellos, la gran amistad y la gran confianza para decir y saber las verdades de cada uno; pienso que es importante demostrar lo buen amigo que son estos personajes y por último y lo más relevante de la historia, es como deben lidiar cada uno de ellos y otros personajes con respecto a la depresión, que activa el estado en que están, cómo deben lidiar con ese sentimiento, con pensamientos que ponen en peligro sus vidas, si existe o no esa preocupación de que pensará familiares o amigos de ellos por sus decisiones; en mi opinión, a pesar de tener aspectos de humor negro, yo la percibo cómo un gran drama con un tema muy importante para debatir.

La historia está relatada desde el punto de vista de "Val" el cual está interesado por Jerrod Carmichael, su actuación es muy buena y está es la primera vez que lo veo actuar en este tipo de producción, ya que anteriormente lo he visto en los especiales de comedia donde hace Stand Up; me gustó como interpreta a un hombre que en un momento todo lo que ha padecido en el pasado lo abruma y lo deja completamente solo, en una oscuridad tan pesada que pierde sentido a todo y que solo contempla una salida porque no sabe lidiar con nada de lo que está viviendo, su personaje es triste y es porque siente miedo y no sabe cómo expresarlo y en mi opinión es el caso de alguien que no sabe cómo pedir ayuda y que se convenció de que solo puede sufrir, que no debe sentir felicidad plena, Val es un excelente personaje y la Interpretación de Carmichael es excelente. El otro gran personaje, "Kevin" interpretado por Christopher Abbott, es aún más triste y afectado de lo que está "Val", su dolor es algo que motiva varios momentos en el film, muchos completamente locos, divertidos, demostración de amistad, de verdadero apoyo, pero otros dónde es imposible no demostrar el sufrimiento que padece por cómo un sistema le ha fallado y en vez de ayudarlo, lo que ha hecho es afectarle mucho más; Abbott hace un buen trabajo, su personaje es de mucha importancia para esta historia.

The script is written by Ari Katcher and Ryan Welch and it is great, there are many factors that stood out in this story of two friends who suffer from very difficult situations, first of all I must talk about the humor that exists between these characters and is that showing a friendship of so many years, gives them the confidence to face in a humorous way the depression they suffer, that is something palpable and that helps to enjoy this story; the second is the support they have between them, the great friendship and the great confidence to tell and know the truths of each one; I think it is important to show how good friends these characters are and finally and most relevant of the story, is how each of them and other characters must deal with depression, which activates the state in which they are, how they must deal with that feeling, with thoughts that endanger their lives, whether or not there is that concern about what family or friends will think of them for their decisions; in my opinion, despite having aspects of black humor, I perceive it as a great drama with a very important issue to discuss.

The story is told from the point of view of "Val" who is interested in Jerrod Carmichael, his acting is very good and this is the first time I see him acting in this kind of production, as I have previously seen him in the comedy specials where he does Stand Up; I liked how he plays a man who in a moment everything he has suffered in the past overwhelms him and leaves him completely alone, in such a heavy darkness that he loses sense to everything and only contemplates a way out because he does not know how to deal with anything he is living, his character is sad and it is because he feels fear and does not know how to express it and in my opinion it is the case of someone who does not know how to ask for help and who convinced himself that he can only suffer, that he should not feel full happiness, Val is an excellent character and the Interpretation of Carmichael is excellent. The other great character, "Kevin" played by Christopher Abbott, is even more sad and affected than "Val" is, his pain is something that motivates several moments in the film, many completely crazy, funny, demonstration of friendship, of true support, but others where it is impossible not to show the suffering he suffers for how a system has failed him and instead of helping him, what it has done is affect him much more; Abbott does a good job, his character is of much importance to this story.

Cómo dije anteriormente, la sinopsis de este film me llamo tanto la atención que se convirtió en una de las películas que más quería ver del pasado año, me pareció genial que las expectativas que tenía fueron respondidas por esta corta y directa película que no pierde tiempo en demostrar como la depresión puede acabar de manera rápida con la estabilidad mental de una persona; este tema lo representa el film en una historia sobre la gran amistad entre dos hombres que conocen todos sus secretos, todo lo que han padecido y que justamente por eso deciden apoyarse en cualquiera decisión que tomen aunque nunca dejarán pasar el momento para de una manera u otra dar una oportunidad más así sea para sumergirse en el dolor o para obtener una ayuda que le brinde un día más. En mi opinión, On the Count of Three, es un film muy bien escrito, dirigido y actuado, es un crudo relato sobre la depresión y el suicidio; demuestra lo duro que es para estas personas lidiar con un dolor que para ellos es difícil de superar; es un dramático film, pero también es una hermosa historia sobre la amistad. Sé que hay muchos films actualmente sobre la depresión como "Aftersun" o "The Wale", pero ojalá puedan dar una oportunidad a esta película en dónde mi única recomendación es si son sensibles a ciertas escenas donde personajes se hacen daño a sí mismos, entonces puede ser impactante ciertas escenas de este film, pero también debo decir que contiene mensajes de ayuda y esperanza para quienes sufren de cualquier padecimiento causado por la depresión.

As I said before, the synopsis of this film caught my attention so much that it became one of the films I most wanted to see last year, I thought it was great that the expectations I had were answered by this short and direct film that wastes no time in showing how depression can quickly end the mental stability of a person; This theme is represented by the film in a story about the great friendship between two men who know all their secrets, everything they have suffered and that is precisely why they decide to support each other in whatever decision they make, but never let the moment pass to give one more chance, whether it is to dive into the pain or to get help to give them one more day. In my opinion, On the Count of Three, is a very well written, directed and acted film, it is a raw account of depression and suicide; it shows how hard it is for these people to deal with a pain that for them is difficult to overcome; it is a dramatic film, but it is also a beautiful story about friendship. I know there are many films currently about depression like "Aftersun" or "The Wale", but hopefully you can give a chance to this film where my only recommendation is if you are sensitive to certain scenes where characters hurt themselves, then it can be shocking certain scenes of this film, but I must also say that it contains messages of help and hope for those who suffer from any ailment caused by depression.
