Orion and the Dark - Movie Review [ES - EN]

El "Coming of Age" es el género del cine del que más me agrada ver; las historias de personajes transitando por una etapa de la vida en dónde la necesidad de conectar, encajar, ser parte de algo, se convierte en prioridad para formar una personalidad en el futuro; creo que hay historias muy bien escritas que aunque mayormente usan otros géneros como la comedia o drama, siempre he pensado que funciona con otros más y es que por mucha fantasía o exageración que puede tener alguna de estas historias, siempre está presente ese toque de realidad lo cual hace que el público puedan sentirse identificado.

"Coming of Age" is the genre of cinema that I like to see the most; the stories of characters going through a stage of life where the need to connect, fit in, be part of something, becomes a priority to form a personality in the future; I think there are very well written stories that although mostly use other genres such as comedy or drama, I have always thought that it works with other genres and no matter how much fantasy or exaggeration that may have some of these stories, there is always that touch of reality which makes the public can feel identified.

"Orion and the Dark" es la más reciente producción animada de DreamWorks Animation y Netflix; este film relata la historia de "Orion", un chico de 11 años de edad, el cual está comenzando en transitar una etapa de su vida que lo podrá definir en su futuro; eso hace que el joven Orion sienta ansiedad y peor aún, sienta miedo por toda experiencia que pueda tener; justamente uno de sus grandes miedos es a la oscuridad lo cual es extraño porque no pierde la oportunidad de hacérselo saber y en una noche cuando la oscuridad es total, este chico tendrá la visita de su más grande némesis, pero para su sorpresa, encontrará de lo que más teme podrá ser el punto de partida de encontrar la valentía para enfrentar el futuro.

"Orion and the Dark" is the most recent animated production of DreamWorks Animation and Netflix; this film tells the story of "Orion", an 11 year old boy, who is beginning to go through a stage of his life that could define his future; that makes young Orion feel anxiety and even worse, feel fear for any experience he may have; precisely one of his greatest fears is the darkness which is strange because he does not miss the opportunity to let him know it and in a night when the darkness is total, this boy will have the visit of his greatest nemesis, but to his surprise, he will find what he fears the most could be the starting point to find the courage to face the future.

Este film es basado en el libro infantil del mismo nombre y que fue escrito por Emma Yarlett; su historia como otras producciones animadas se enfoca en ciertas dificultades que padece el personaje principal en el momento de comenzar su transitar por la adolescencia; un tema muy presente en este tipo de films, pero que en esta oportunidad presenta la particularidad de tener un buen relato de como los miedos podrá ser o no muy influyentes en las personas que seremos en el futuro; justamente ese es un tema que más me ha llamado la atención en esta película porque no solamente se enfoca en como los miedos afectan a alguien en una etapa de su vida, sino como pueden seguir estando presente en el futuro.

El guion fue escrito por Charlie Kaufman; justamente demuestra que se puede aprender a lidiar con el miedo, no hablo superarlo definitivamente porque la película demuestra que eso es imposible, pero que de igual manera se debe demostrar valentía al vivir las diferentes situaciones que debemos experimentar; ese mensaje es maravilloso y lo que me ha sorprendido en esta película que pareciera tener un transitar ya visto en otros films dentro del género Coming of Age, pero tiene una particularidad en el relato que le da cierta originalidad; estos aspectos hacen mucho más entretenida esta película en dónde la animación, la comedia, aventura y fantasía, no le resta a tener su porción de realidad.

This film is based on the children's book of the same name, written by Emma Yarlett; its story, like other animated productions, focuses on certain difficulties that the main character suffers at the time of beginning his journey through adolescence; a theme very present in this type of films, but that in this opportunity presents the particularity of having a good story of how fears may or may not be very influential in the people we will be in the future; precisely that is a theme that has caught my attention in this film because it not only focuses on how fears affect someone at a stage of his life, but how they can continue to be present in the future.

The script was written by Charlie Kaufman; it just shows that you can learn to deal with fear, I'm not talking about overcoming it definitively because the film shows that this is impossible, but that you should still show courage in living the different situations that we must experience; that message is wonderful and what has surprised me in this film that seems to have a transit already seen in other films within the Coming of Age genre, but has a particularity in the story that gives it some originality; these aspects make this film much more entertaining where the animation, comedy, adventure and fantasy, does not detract from having its portion of reality.

El diseño de los personajes y del mundo en dónde se desarrolla la historia es muy agradable, es bastante dinámico y a pesar de ser un film animado, debo decir que es bastante caricaturesco y eso es debido por la imaginación de "Orion", el cual a primer momento me hizo compararlo a "Charlie Brown", pero por supuesto con un inmenso temor a todo y por supuesto solitario; esta característica del personaje parece que a ciertas personas que han visto el film, le parece molesta, no les voy a mentir de que sí, es cierto, es molesta, pero también es necesaria para la historia, en realidad el comportamiento del personaje en un principio es importante para su evolución y para su relación con "La Oscuridad", el cual es un personaje fascinante, una entidad que se ha descrito como una imagen de la maldad, pero según él, es un elemento necesario para la vida; con La Oscuridad se explora el prejuicio, la soledad, la depresión, es un personaje que debe lidiar con una opinión errada hacia él y que debe encontrar a alguien que puedan entender su relevancia en la vida; es de los personajes escritos y diseñados de manera agradable tanto para adulto como niños.

The design of the characters and the world where the story takes place is very nice, it is quite dynamic and despite being an animated film, I must say that it is quite cartoonish and that is due to the imagination of "Orion", which at first made me compare him to "Charlie Brown", but of course with an immense fear of everything and of course lonely; this characteristic of the character seems that to some people who have seen the film, it seems annoying, I'm not going to lie that yes, it is true, it is annoying, but it is also necessary for the story, in fact the behavior of the character in the beginning is important for his evolution and for his relationship with "The Darkness", which is a fascinating character, an entity that has been described as an image of evil, but according to him, it is a necessary element for life; The Darkness explores prejudice, loneliness, depression, he is a character who must deal with a wrong opinion towards him and who must find someone who can understand his relevance in life; he is one of the characters written and designed in an enjoyable way for both adults and children.

Tenía tiempo que no veía una película que superaba las expectativas que me había hecho; Orion and the Dark es magnífica y no entiendo el porqué de su nula promoción, su estreno fue hace días atrás y poco he leído en las redes sociales sobre esta historia, una que si es cierto que usa elementos antes vistos, pero el trato a temas sobre el miedo y de como sucumbir a ese sentimiento puede afectar nuestro futuro y de quién nos rodea, es algo que pocas veces he visto; en eso ha demostrado originalidad y también la manera simple y directa sobre enseñar un mensaje relevante sobre cómo lidiar con ciertos problemas a una temprana edad en nuestro crecimiento; recomiendo enormemente ver esta película, la animación es magnífica en lo simple que es, sus personajes están muy bien escritos, su desarrollo es excelente y es parte de la sorpresa del film y por supuesto su historia, es un Coming of Age, lleno de fantasía, aventura y como dije al comienzo de la reseña, con una buena porción de realidad.

It's been a while since I've seen a movie that exceeded my expectations; Orion and the Dark is magnificent and I don't understand the reason for its lack of promotion, its premiere was a few days ago and I've read little on social networks about this story, it's true that it uses elements seen before, but the treatment of fear and how succumbing to that feeling can affect our future and who surrounds us, is something I've rarely seen; in that it has shown originality and also the simple and direct way of teaching a relevant message about how to deal with certain problems at an early age in our growing up; I highly recommend watching this movie, the animation is magnificent in how simple it is, its characters are very well written, its development is excellent and is part of the surprise of the film and of course its story, it is a Coming of Age, full of fantasy, adventure and as I said at the beginning of the review, with a good portion of reality.
