Perfect Days - Movie Review [ES - EN]

A pesar de haber transcurrido un mes de la finalización de la temporada de premios al cine, todavía me falta por ver películas que obtuvieron reconocimiento al ser nominadas y hasta ser premiadas; justamente uno de esos films fue el representante de Japón en festivales y en muchos premios, el cual expone desde un relato muy simple el tema de la soledad como un estilo de vida.

Even though a month has passed since the end of the film awards season, I still have yet to see films that got recognition by being nominated and even being awarded; precisely one of those films was the representative of Japan in festivals and in many awards, which exposes from a very simple story the theme of loneliness as a way of life.

"Perfect Days" film estrenado primeramente en mayo del pasado año en el "Cannes Film Festival" en donde obtuvo dos premios y posteriormente se estrenó en diciembre de ese mismo año, relata la vida de "Hirayama"; un hombre solitario al cual le acompañamos en cada una de sus actividades cotidianas, sea en su trabajo como limpiador de urinarios públicos o en su hobby, la fotografía o el de escuchar música; actividades normales, simples, reales las cuales le conectará con personas en el presente, sin tener expectativas de lo que pueda suceder en el futuro.

"Perfect Days" film premiered firstly in May last year at the Cannes Film Festival where he won two awards and later released in December of the same year, we will witness the life of "Hirayama"; a lonely man who we accompany him in each of his daily activities, either in his work as a cleaner of public urinals or in his hobby, photography or listening to music; normal activities, simple, real which will connect him with people in the present, without having expectations of what may happen in the future.

Este film fue dirigido por el director alemán Wim Wenders, quien cuenta con obras reconocidas como "Paris, Texas" (1984) y "Wings of Desire" (1987), entre muchas otras; en esta oportunidad entra en la historia del cine japonés al ser el primer extranjero en dirigir un film que representa al Japón en festivales y premios del cine; Wenders desde lo simple y monótono de la historia, decide mostrar cada vivencia del protagonista desde lo cómodo y solitario de su hogar, hasta lo transitado de las múltiples zonas en donde trabaja; muestra lo hermoso de una gran ciudad, así como lo de una zona rural, pero lo que más me ha gustado es donde proliferan grandes árboles lo cual da calma y paz de una historia muy tranquila.

El guion escrito por el mismo Wenders junto a Takuma Takasaki, seguramente puede ser considerado como aburrido por relatar una historia que se repite en la primera hora del film lo que lleva a mostrar la monotonía de la vida del protagonista; posiblemente sea la manera más extensa en que se introduce a un personaje en un film, pero creo que es necesario para el desarrollo de ese mismo personaje, una ruptura necesaria de la historia para brindar un contexto sobre un pasado que la misma historia no necesita para funcionar. Por supuesto que este film se trata temas como la soledad, pero creo que también la necesidad de conectar con otras personas, no de crear lazos profundos con todos a quien debes conocer, pero si ser útil, un apoyo inmediato o tal vez en el futuro, eso es excelente la manera el cómo está demostrado en esta película.

This film was directed by the German director Wim Wenders, who has recognized works such as "Paris, Texas" (1984) and "Wings of Desire" (1987), among many others; in this opportunity he enters the history of Japanese cinema by being the first foreigner to direct a film that represents Japan in festivals and film awards; Wenders**_ from the simple and monotonous of the story, decides to show every experience of the protagonist from the comfortable and lonely of his home, to the busy of the multiple areas where he works; shows the beauty of a big city, as well as a rural area, but what I liked most is where large trees proliferate which gives calm and peace of a very quiet story.

The script written by Wenders himself together with Takuma Takasaki, can surely be considered boring for telling a story that repeats itself in the first hour of the film which leads to show the monotony of the protagonist's life; it is possibly the most extensive way in which a character is introduced in a film, but I think it is necessary for the development of that same character, a necessary break in the story to provide a context about a past that the same story does not need to work. Of course this film deals with issues such as loneliness, but I think also the need to connect with other people, not to create deep bonds with everyone you should know, but to be useful, a support immediately or maybe in the future, that is excellent the way it is demonstrated in this film.

El actor, Kōji Yakusho, es todo en este film, desde el momento en que sale de su hogar, ve al cielo y sonríe, nos va mostrando una serie de sentimientos solamente con el uso de gestos faciales; su Interpretación de "Hirayama" nos demuestra la comodidad de soledad, alguien que crea y se rige por ciertas reglas la cual práctica de una manera metódica y así disfruta de su día a día; esto es importante para este personaje, él disfruta en todo lo que hace, se puede sorprender por ciertos comportamientos, pero no juzga a nadie, creo que eso hace a Hirayama una buena persona, no perfecta, pero si alguien que no busca el daño de otros; esas características son muy bien interpretadas por Yakusho lo cual le llevó a ganar el Premio a Mejor Actor en el Festival de Cannes.

The actor, Kōji Yakusho, is everything in this film, from the moment he leaves his home, sees the sky and smiles, he is showing us a series of feelings only with the use of facial gestures; his interpretation of "Hirayama" shows us the comfort of solitude, someone who creates and abides by certain rules which he practices in a methodical way and thus enjoys his day to day; This is important for this character, he enjoys everything he does, he may be surprised by certain behaviors, but he does not judge anyone, I think that makes Hirayama a good person, not perfect, but someone who does not seek to harm others; these characteristics are very well interpreted by Yakusho which led him to win the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival.

La manera en como Wenders concibió este film, da como una sensación de estar viendo un documental, algo que también se percibió en "The Zone of Interest" la cual ganó premios como Mejor Película Extranjera, pero creo que en esta oportunidad, Perfect Days está más apegado a ese estilo que el otro film antes citado o posiblemente al hecho de mostrar la vida de un hombre que a pesar de tener un pasado algo problemático, se enfoca en demostrar que podemos tener buenos días, cumpliendo con nuestras obligaciones y manteniendo la cordura con ciertas y gratificantes actividades; eso es lo que me parece genial de esta historia que no necesita del conflicto, del problema a resolver, del villano a superar, para ser una historia con alta notoriedad, solo se necesitó a un personaje que le gusta su trabajo, beber, comer, leer un buen libro, tomar fotografías y escuchar muy buena música para de alguna manera tener días perfectos.

The way Wenders conceived this film, gives a feeling of watching a documentary, something that was also perceived in "The Zone of Interest" which won awards for Best Foreign Film, but I think this time, Perfect Days is more attached to that style than the other film mentioned above or possibly the fact of showing the life of a man who despite having a somewhat troubled past, focuses on demonstrating that we can have good days, fulfilling our obligations and maintaining sanity with certain and rewarding activities; that's what I think is great about this story that doesn't need the conflict, the problem to solve, the villain to overcome, to be a story with high notoriety, it only needed a character who likes his job, drinking, eating, reading a good book, taking pictures and listening to great music to somehow have perfect days.
