Predator: Badlands - Movie Review [ES - EN]

La franquicia cinematográfica de "Predator" es, junto a la de "Alien" de las que me considero un fiel seguidor; en estos últimos años mis expectativas aumentaron con el estreno de "Prey" (2022), esperando ver más del mundo que está creando el director y guionista Dan Trachtenberg con respecto a la especie alienígena conocida como "Yautja", ya que en el pasado año, Trachtenberg estrenó no solo una, sino dos películas que expanden su visión de esa franquicia de acción, terror y ciencia ficción. El primer film estrenado en el 2025 fue "Predator: Killer of Killers", una producción animada que relataba el ya conocido enfrentamiento entre los cazadores alienígenas y humanos; el segundo film llamado "Predator: Badlands" es una producción más ambiciosa, ya que en esta oportunidad la historia es relatada desde el punto de vista de un Yautja, quien es visto como el más débil de su clan y que deberá someterse a una gran prueba en un planeta letal para ganar el reconocimiento de sus superiores.

The "Predator" film franchise, along with the "Alien" franchise, is one of those I consider myself a loyal fan of; in recent years, my expectations have risen with the release of "Prey" (2022), as I look forward to seeing more of the world that director and screenwriter Dan Trachtenberg regarding the alien species known as the "Yautja," since last year, Trachtenberg released not just one, but two films that expand his vision of this action, horror, and science fiction franchise. The first film, released in 2025, was "Predator: Killer of Killers," an animated production that recounted the well-known confrontation between the alien hunters and humans; the second film, titled "Predator: Badlands", is a more ambitious production, as this time the story is told from the perspective of a Yautja who is viewed as the weakest of his clan and must undergo a grueling trial on a lethal planet to earn the recognition of his superiors.

"Badlands" se estreno en noviembre del pasado año y su historia generó gran expectativa entre los fans de la franquicia, ya que es la primera vez en que la versión cinematográfica se explora muchos ambitos de los Yautja, me refiero a lo que es su vida como una raza de cazadores que se rige por la ley del más fuerte y que justamente ese título de ser el mejor de su clan siempre está aprueba, en eso no se diferencia de la historia de otros films, porque nuevamente veremos a un cazador llegar a un planeta para así reclamar el premio después de vencer a la criatura más fuerte de ese lugar, pero como ya he dicho con anterioridad, la gran diferencia es que en esta oportunidad el protagonista principal es quien anteriormente era visto como el villano, y eso hizo que esta producción fuera llamativa, porque en el formato de comics es donde se ha escondido el mundo de Predator y es en el pasado año donde en el formato del cine se dio esta gran oportunidad.

"Badlands" premiered last November, and its story generated a lot of excitement among fans of the franchise, since this is the first time the film adaptation has explored many aspects of the Yautja—I’m referring to their life as a race of hunters governed by the law of the strongest, and how that title of being the best in their clan is always up for grabs. In that sense, it doesn’t differ from the storylines of other films, because once again we’ll see a hunter arrive on a planet to claim the prize after defeating the strongest creature there. But as I’ve said before, the big difference is that this time the main protagonist is the one who was previously seen as the villain, and that’s what made this production stand out, because the world of Predator has been hidden away in the comic book format, and it was only last year that this great opportunity arose in the film format.

A pesar de lo necesario y acertado en relatar la historia desde el punto de vista del Yautja, la historia es bastante simple; personalmente no percibí una gran profundidad o dramatismo en la historia del protagonista aunque si es cierto que los temas como lazos familiares, en especial la hermandad, es importante en la historia y lo cual puede generar o ser el motivo de secuelas; creo que esas características son en momentos opacadas por la necesidad de hacer una producción entretenida, divertida, directa y personalmente la decisión de usar humor me desconectaron un poco, pero al entender la manera del relato de esta historia, que la difiere de otras películas y que la hace muy parecida a "Killer of Killers" me hizo captar que esta es la vía que Trachtenberg quiere transitar para esta etapa de la franquicia: convertirla en puro entretenimiento, lo cual, en mi opinión, ha acertado en las tres películas estrenadas bajo su dirección.

Although it was necessary and effective to tell the story from the Yautja’s perspective, the plot is fairly simple; personally, I didn’t sense much depth or drama in the protagonist’s story, though it’s true that themes like family ties—especially brotherhood—are important to the story and could serve as the basis for sequels; I believe those elements are at times overshadowed by the need to create an entertaining, fun, and straightforward production, and personally, the decision to use humor disconnected me a bit. However, understanding the narrative approach of this story—which sets it apart from other films and makes it very similar to Killer of Killers—helped me realize that this is the direction ** Trachtenberg** wants to take for this stage of the franchise: turning it into pure entertainment, which, in my opinion, he has succeeded in doing in the three films released under his direction.

El entretenimiento que ofrece este film es causado por las escenas de aventura en la cacería que lleva a cabo el protagonista, creo que existe mucha influencia de "Star Wars", "Indiana Jones" y hasta puedo decir "Guardians of the Galaxy", en el estilo de acción y humor y es una característica que no esperaba de ver en un film de Depredador, pero entiendo en qué su personaje principal, "Dek", al ser tan joven e inexperto, presenta dificultades al explorar un planeta con tanto peligro y al ser está una producción con la categoría de PG-13, era de esperar que el tono fuera más suave que las anteriores películas, pero de igual manera, Trachtenberg hace que sea un film divertido, dinámico con muchas secuencias acción desde el segundo acto hasta el final. Existe otra importante característica y es que no todos los focos están dirigidos a "Dek", ya que otros personajes como "Thia" y "Bud" tienen mucha relevancia en la historia; no son un simple relleno, sino que tienen un aporte vital tanto en el relato como en las escenas de acción.

The entertainment value of this film comes from the adventure scenes in the protagonist’s hunt. I think there’s a strong influence from Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and even Guardians of the Galaxy in the style of action and humor—a trait I didn’t expect to see in a Predator film, but I understand that since the main character, "Dek," is so young and inexperienced, he faces difficulties exploring such a dangerous planet. And since this is a PG-13-rated production, it was to be expected that the tone would be softer than in previous films. Nevertheless, Trachtenberg makes it a fun, dynamic film with plenty of action sequences from the second act through the end. There’s another important aspect: the spotlight isn’t solely on “Dek,” as other characters like “Thia” and “Bud” play significant roles in the story; they aren’t mere fillers but make vital contributions to both the narrative and the action scenes.

Este debe ser el primer film "para toda la familia" dentro de la franquicia de Depredador; cuando hice comparación a otras películas de aventuras, en dónde están protagonizadas por personajes percibidos como rechazados, que por alguna razón se reúnen formando un geupo disfuncional para así demostrar su fuerza, es lo que mayormente sucede en muchas películas actuales de corte heroico y esto era algo que no esperaba de ver en esta franquicia de ciencia ficción y créanme que esto no es una queja o una crítica negativa, creo que es una manera de expandir esta historia y no volverla tan repetitiva y eso lo aprecio porque se que de esta franquicia da para mucho más y eso me genera expectativa en lo que deben ser las secuelas de ambas películas estrenadas el pasado año, pero también necesito un film que siga explorando o profundizando en los diferentes clanes de los yautja, como pueden ver, algo más crudo y violento. No tengo ninguna duda de que Predator tiene un gran potencial y solo queda esperar que se sigan tomando buenas decisiones para así generar producciones de buena calidad.

This must be the first "family-friendly" film in the Predator franchise; When I compared it to other adventure films—where the protagonists are characters perceived as outcasts who, for some reason, come together to form a dysfunctional group in order to prove their strength—that’s what mostly happens in many current heroic-style films, and this was something I didn’t expect to see in this sci-fi franchise. And believe me, this isn’t a complaint or a negative critique; I think it’s a way to expand this story and keep it from becoming repetitive, and I appreciate that because I know this franchise has so much more to offer, which builds my anticipation for the sequels to both films released last year. But I also need a film that continues to explore or delve deeper into the different Yautja clans—as you can see, something a bit more raw and violent. I have no doubt that Predator has great potential, and we can only hope that they continue to make good decisions to produce high-quality films.
