Pretty Lethal - Movie Review [ES - EN]

Desde hace varias semanas he visto que se han estrenado una serie de películas tanto en servicios de streaming como en salas de cine donde el tema o el género base para sus historias es el de **"sobrevivir". Este es un género que en particular me gusta porque, en la mayoría de las veces, estas producciones cinematográficas están protagonizadas por mujeres que deberán demostrar valentía, fuerza y fiereza para poder superar cualquier enemigo a enfrentar. Es por eso que en estos días haré reseñas de las nuevas películas estrenadas en los últimos meses, empezando por uno de los últimos estrenos originales de Prime Video.

For several weeks now, I’ve noticed that a number of films have been released—both on streaming services and in theaters—whose central theme or genre is “survival.” This is a genre I particularly enjoy because, more often than not, these films feature women who must demonstrate courage, strength, and tenacity to overcome whatever enemies they face. That’s why, over the next few days, I’ll be reviewing the new films released in recent months, starting with one of Prime Video’s latest original releases.

"Pretty Lethal" es un thriller de acción que relata la historia de un no tan unido grupo de bailarinas de ballet que, al momento de viajar a Budapest para una importante presentación, tienen un grave problema de traslado, lo cual les hace desviarse del camino y lamentablemente llegar a un lugar donde la vida tiene muy poco valor, y es en ese justo momento en que este grupo disfuncional de chicas deberá dejar atrás cualquier problema, lo cual les hará realizar una presentación especial en contra de un grupo de asesinos.

"Pretty Lethal" is an action thriller that tells the story of a not-so-close-knit group of ballet dancers who, while traveling to Budapest for an important performance, encounter a serious transportation problem that forces them off course and, unfortunately, leads them to a place where life is worth very little, and it is at that very moment that this dysfunctional group of girls must put aside their differences, leading them to put on a special performance against a group of assassins.

Estoy plenamente convencido de que esta película no es la que todos quieren ver, ni mucho menos, y eso es debido posiblemente al tonto de la sinopsis y, por supuesto, por lo poco creíble, pero justamente esa, en mi opinión, son las virtudes de este film al cual no hay que tomarse en serio. Este film, dirigido por Vicky Jewson, directora inglesa que cuenta con tan solo cuatro largometrajes (contando este film), impuso un ritmo trepidante para el relato sobre esta historia de supervivencia por parte de este grupo de bailarinas. Esta es una producción con un desarrollo rápido e intenso, lo cual valoro y el cual creo que es su gran virtud, así como son las escenas de combate que presentan una buena y divertida coreografía, en donde la violencia y el gore se hacen presentes; ese ritmo y muy buen trabajo en las escenas de combate hacen que este sea un film bastante entretenido.

I am fully convinced that this movie isn’t what everyone wants to see—far from it—and that’s likely due to the silly synopsis and, of course, its lack of credibility; but in my opinion, those are precisely the strengths of this film, which shouldn’t be taken seriously. This film, directed by Vicky Jewson, an English director with only four feature films to her credit (including this one), sets a breakneck pace for the story of this group of dancers’ struggle for survival. This is a production with a fast-paced and intense narrative, which I appreciate and believe is its greatest strength, as are the fight scenes featuring good, entertaining choreography, where violence and gore are present; that pace and the excellent work in the fight scenes make this a thoroughly entertaining film.

El guion, en mi opinión, fue muy correcto al momento en que no hubo la necesidad de explicar la relación entre el grupo de bailarinas; bastó tan solo la escena de inicio para demostrar la personalidad de cada una de las chicas, así como su relevancia, específicamente sus motivos para ser parte del grupo. Otro punto importante fue que en el breve primer acto se presenta a las protagonistas de la manera anteriormente descrita; de igual manera sucede con los antagonistas, que justamente también representan una familia disfuncional, pero criminal y con una mentalidad muy inestable; creo que ambas maneras de dar presentación a estos personajes fueron la correcta, aunque lamento que, por lo trepidante del film, no haya un completo desarrollo, lo cual creo que pudo hacer mejor a cada uno, tanto los buenos como los malos.

In my opinion, the script handled things very well in that there was no need to explain the relationship between the group of dancers; the opening scene alone was enough to showcase each girl’s personality, as well as her significance—specifically, her reasons for being part of the group. Another important point was that the brief first act introduces the protagonists in the manner described above; the same goes for the antagonists, who also represent a dysfunctional family—but a criminal one with a very unstable mindset; I think both approaches to introducing these characters were the right ones, though I regret that, due to the film’s fast pace, there isn’t a full character development, which I believe could have made each one—both the good and the bad—more compelling.

Esta es una película que consideré perfecta para el lugar en donde fue estrenada; es bastante rápida, directa, divertida, entretenida y justamente esas dos últimas características se deben a no tomar muy en serio las escenas de acción, lo cual creo que es necesario en este tipo de filmes porque creo que es lo que justamente las hace entretenidas; claramente, ese tipo de escenas funciona no solamente por intentar ser caricaturescas o exageradas, sino por ser bien planeadas por su directora y a la vez muy bien interpretadas tanto por las actrices como por los dobles de acción, lo cual me pareció bastante acertado. Esta no es la mejor película de acción del año y no creo que quisiera tener ese nombramiento, solamente que es un film con una historia que sonó fantástica y que creo desarrollaron de manera correcta, lo cual la hace funcionar porque es entretenida.

This is a movie I thought was perfect for the venue where it premiered; it’s fast-paced, straightforward, funny, and entertaining—and those last two qualities stem precisely from the fact that the action scenes aren’t taken too seriously, which I think is essential in this kind of film because that’s exactly what makes them entertaining; Clearly, those kinds of scenes work not just because they try to be cartoonish or exaggerated, but because they’re well-planned by the director and at the same time very well performed by both the actresses and the stunt doubles, which I thought was quite effective. This isn’t the best action movie of the year, and I don’t think it would want that title; it’s simply a film with a story that sounded fantastic and that I think was developed correctly, which makes it work because it’s entertaining.
