Me gusta ver thrillers criminales, es un género que presenta muchas características o clichés dentro de sus historias, principalmente en su protagonista el cual debe tener una historia de redención, superar un pasado tormentoso, el ser justo y correcto en un mundo cruel, egoísta, lleno de desconfianza; justamente esa historia de redención se puede lograr al aparecer un caso policial importante, algo en dónde obsesionarse, alinearse, perder la perspectiva de la realidad, tener la sensación que es uno contra el mundo; estos aspectos son algunos de los cuales me gusta ver transitar al personaje principal en este estilo de films, es lo que me atrae y es lo que primeramente ofrece está producción de Netflix a la que hago reseña.

I like to watch crime thrillers, it is a genre that presents many characteristics or clichés within their stories, mainly in its protagonist who must have a story of redemption, overcome a stormy past, to be fair and correct in a cruel, selfish world, full of distrust; precisely that story of redemption can be achieved when an important police case appears, something to become obsessed, to align oneself, to lose the perspective of reality, to have the feeling that it is one against the world; these aspects are some of which I like to see the main character go through in this style of films, it is what attracts me and it is what firstly offers this Netflix production that I am reviewing.

"Reptile", thriller criminal estrenado en Netflix en el pasado mes de octubre, relata la historia de un brutal asesinato que sucedió en una casa rural la cual está a la venta, este crimen crea una gran preocupación en una pequeña, pero favorecida comunidad lo cual se convierte en la principal prioridad en resolver por parte de la policía local y por eso se le asigna el caso al detective "Tom Nichols", un detective con un pasado nada favorable porque se le ha relacionado con casos de corrupción; Tom junto a su compañero tendrá un abanico de sospechosos del crimen lo cual hará que la investigación transcurra por ciertos caminos, uno cada vez más oscuro que otro y en dónde el final podrá revelar un secreto lleno de peligros.

"Reptile", a crime thriller released on Netflix last October, tells the story of a brutal murder that happened in a rural house which is for sale, this crime creates a great concern in a small but favored community which becomes the main priority to solve by the local police and that is why the case is assigned to detective "Tom Nichols", a detective with a not very favorable past because it has been linked to corruption cases; Tom along with his partner will have a range of suspects in the crime which will make the investigation will take certain paths, one increasingly darker than another and where the end may reveal a secret full of dangers.

Esta es el tipo de película que me despierta cierto interés de ver, pero de igual manera mantengo bajas expectativas y más cuando cuenta con un director el cual se estrena en un largometraje con esta producción, ese director es Grant Singer, quien en su carrera como director abunda la realización de videos musicales y documentales; en "Reptile", este director trata de hacer un buen trabajo y siendo sincero no me desagradó su estilo, me gustaron varias de las escenas aunque es inevitable no compararlas con algunas vistas en videos musicales, pero esto es algo habitual en varias nuevas producciones en dónde directores pareciera tener la obligación de hacer algo artístico, lo cual se nota el cuidado de la iluminación, los colores, posición de actores y demás elementos en una escena, elementos fundamentales que dependerán de otros factores para que funcionen mejor.

El guion es escrito por el mismo Singer, junto a Benjamin Brewer y Benicio del Toro; como pude señalar al comienzo de la reseña, este estilo de films cumple con una serie de clichés y en este film se usan muchos; ahora que eso suceda no quiere decir que el éxito o la calidad del guion este presente porque depende de muchos factores, como por ejemplo el misterio y los giros que pueda ofrecer la historia; lamentablemente el misterio no existe, no hay uno como tal porque es predecible y en mi opinión no existe un buen relato con respecto a todo lo que va sucediendo que nos prepara para el final, creo que justamente la sobreexposición de las características de este estilo de films; hace que la historia es poco original, repetitiva y repito, predecible, a eso le sumo lo intrascendente de ciertos personajes que deberían ser importantes, pero al final su aporte se pudo manejar de manera diferente; no hay duda que el guion de los puntos negativos del film.

This is the kind of movie that arouses my interest to see, but I still keep low expectations and even more when it has a director who debuts in a feature film with this production, that director is Grant Singer, who in his career as a director abounds in the making of music videos and documentaries; In "Reptile", this director tries to do a good job and to be honest I did not dislike his style, I liked several of the scenes although it is inevitable not to compare them with some seen in music videos, but this is common in several new productions where directors seem to have the obligation to do something artistic, which shows the care of lighting, colors, position of actors and other elements in a scene, fundamental elements that depend on other factors to work better.

The script is written by Singer himself, together with Benjamin Brewer and Benicio del Toro; as I could point out at the beginning of the review, this style of films complies with a series of clichés and in this film many are used; now that this happens does not mean that the success or quality of the script is present because it depends on many factors, such as the mystery and the twists that the story can offer; Unfortunately the mystery does not exist, there is not one as such because it is predictable and in my opinion there is not a good story with respect to everything that is happening that prepares us for the end, I think just the overexposure of the characteristics of this style of films; makes the story is unoriginal, repetitive and repeat, predictable, to that I add the inconsequential of certain characters that should be important, but in the end their contribution could be handled differently; there is no doubt that the script of the negative points of the film.

El contar con Benicio del Toro en el rol protagónico fue positivo para este proyecto, aunque la actuación no es excelsa, pero si adecuada para la historia; la interpretación de "Tom" presenta diferentes matices, principalmente la de un hombre que teme a la soledad y que pareciera estar dispuesto a realizar cualquier cosa para no perder esa compañía, ese es un punto de partida al cual se le debe prestar atención para su desarrollo porque es lo que creará conflictos con respecto al hacer el bien, a cumplir su rol de policía; A pesar de que ciertos aspectos del caso puede opacar los motivos del personaje interpretado por del Toro, lo cual necesitaba de mejor interpretaciones de varios de los actores con quien comparte escena, pero lamentablemente muchos de estos actores son víctimas de mala escritura de sus personajes, de su nulo desarrollo que hubiera profundizado en el protagonista principal.

Having Benicio del Toro in the leading role was positive for this project, although the performance is not excellent, but adequate for the story; the interpretation of "Tom" presents different nuances, mainly that of a man who fears loneliness and seems to be willing to do anything not to lose that company, that is a starting point to which attention should be paid for its development because it is what will create conflicts with respect to doing good, to fulfill his role as a policeman; Although certain aspects of the case can overshadow the motives of the character played by del Toro, which needed better performances from several of the actors with whom he shares the scene, but unfortunately many of these actors are victims of bad writing of their characters, of their null development that would have deepened the main protagonist.

"Reptile" es el típico film de Netflix, con eso me refiero a que es una producción cinematográfica con un gran potencial, pero un mal desarrollo y el anticlímax del final; pudo ser mejor y hasta puedo decir que la historia hubiera funcionado como una miniserie en dónde se explore a todos los personajes involucrados, en especial el del protagonista en dónde se desarrolle aún más los miedos que padece y sus motivos a resolver un crimen que nuevamente le cambie la vida; está es una producción regular, creo que tiene muchos elementos que son muy mal usados, son muchas tramas, ofrece muchos detalles y las dos horas de duración no abarca el completo relato del film y eso es más que nada culpa del guion y aunque podrá ser algo extraño, la película me entretuvo en casi su totalidad, hasta el momento que llega el final el cual es decepcionante y aburrido, es un acumulado de malas actuaciones, malas decisiones que afectan por completo el film y lo convierte en otra producción olvidable de Netflix.

Reptile" is a typical Netflix film, by that I mean that it is a film production with great potential, but a bad development and the anticlimax at the end; it could have been better and I can even say that the story would have worked as a miniseries where all the characters involved are explored, especially the protagonist where the fears he suffers and his motives to solve a crime that again changes his life are further developed; this is a regular production, I think it has many elements that are very badly used, there are many plots, it offers many details and the two hours of duration does not cover the complete story of the film and that is mostly the fault of the script and although it may be something strange, the film entertained me in almost its entirety, until the moment the end comes which is disappointing and boring, it is an accumulation of bad performances, bad decisions that completely affect the film and makes it another forgettable Netflix production.
