Scary Movie (2026) - Movie Review [ES - EN]

Después de una larga pausa de 13 años, la franquicia que inició en el 2000, Scary Movie, regresó a la gran pantalla con su sexta entrega bajo la producción de quienes la crearon, me refiero a Los Hermanos Wayans, que desde 2001 no habían participado en ninguna de las anteriores tres películas. Personalmente, disfruto del estilo de comedia en donde el uso de la parodia va sumado a la exageración y comedia física para resaltar sus escenas, y es por eso que considero que tanto la primera como la segunda fueron buenas producciones en el momento de su estreno. Justamente, ese hecho de que estos hermanos estuviesen alejados de la franquicia y, a pesar de crear otras películas del mismo estilo, existía la expectativa de saber si "Los Wayans" después de estar 25 años alejados de la franquicia, pudieran generar una película igual o hasta más cómica que las ya hechas.

After a long 13-year hiatus, the franchise that began in 2000, Scary Movie, returned to the big screen with its sixth installment, produced by its creators—the Wayans Brothers—who hadn’t been involved in any of the previous three films since 2001. Personally, I enjoy this style of comedy, where parody is combined with exaggeration and physical comedy to highlight the scenes, which is why I consider both the first and second films to have been good productions at the time of their release. Precisely because these brothers had been away from the franchise—and despite having created other films in the same style—there was anticipation to see if “the Wayans” could, after a 25-year hiatus from the franchise, produce a movie that was just as funny—or even funnier—than the ones that had already been made.

El regreso de "Los Wayans" a la franquicia, así como el estreno de un nuevo film, era de esperar por el auge del género del terror en estos últimos años, lo cual debería proveer mucho material para esta sexta entrega. Claramente, toda parodia a realizar tendría como base a la película que generó toda la franquicia, y esa es la de "Scream" siendo el icónico "Ghostface", pero en este caso el de Scary Movie, quien nuevamente tendría protagonismo y sí que lo tuvo. En esta ocasión, la película a parodiar fue "Scream 5" que tenía la particularidad de generar nuevos protagonistas que deberían liderar la nueva etapa de la franquicia; justamente eso sería parte de lo cómico o sátira en el sexto film de Scary Movie, ya que en esta ocasión personajes (también icónicos) de la franquicia regresarían para formar grupo con los nuevos, quienes seguramente funcionarían como generación de relevo; esa unión de generaciones debería generar escenas cómicas haciendo referencias a otras películas y situaciones virales.

The return of "The Wayans" to the franchise, as well as the release of a new film, was to be expected given the resurgence of the horror genre in recent years, which should provide plenty of material for this sixth installment. Clearly, any parody would be based on the film that launched the entire franchise—namely, Scream and its iconic “Ghostface”—but in this case, it’s the Scary Movie version of Ghostface, who would once again take center stage—and indeed, he did. This time around, the film being parodied was “Scream 5,” which was notable for introducing new protagonists who were meant to lead the franchise’s next phase; and that’s precisely what would be part of the comedy or satire in the sixth “Scary Movie” film, since this time around, (equally iconic) characters from the franchise would return to team up with the newcomers, who would likely serve as the next generation; this coming together of generations was meant to generate comedic scenes referencing other movies and viral moments.

Lamentablemente, ni el regreso de los famosos hermanos, ni satirizar y parodiar a las nuevas películas de terror y demás sucesos virales, generaron comedia de calidad. La más de una hora y media de duración del film, solamente pude reírme en tan solo una escena; del resto no hubo nada que pudiera considerar como primeramente cómico y después controversial, y esa última característica fue lo que generó decepción en muchos fans porque se esperaba que fuese de esa manera. Los pocos y simples chistes sobre algunos que otros sucesos considerados impactantes en la sociedad se vio como una obligación y personalmente me pareció hasta fuera de contexto por lo obsoleto de los temas usados. Esta debe ser la película menos cómica, menos exagerada y menos física que he visto en la franquicia y lamento que eso sea así porque el material usado para su creación, me refiero a las películas elegidas para parodiar, fue perfecto, pero creo que se quedaron cortos en poder idear una mejor comedia.

Unfortunately, neither the return of the famous brothers nor the satire and parody of new horror movies and other viral trends resulted in quality comedy. Throughout the film’s runtime of over an hour and a half, I only found myself laughing during a single scene; the rest contained nothing I would consider first and foremost funny and then controversial—and it was precisely that latter aspect that disappointed many fans, as they had expected it to be that way. The few, simple jokes about various events considered shocking to society felt like an obligation, and personally, I found them out of context due to how outdated the topics were. This must be the least funny, least over-the-top, and least physical movie I’ve seen in the franchise, and I’m sorry that’s the case because the source material—I’m referring to the movies chosen to parody—was perfect, but I think they fell short in coming up with a better comedy.

La dirección y producción de la película es de un buen nivel y, aunque señaló esos factores como algo positivo, personalmente me sorprendió porque, en mi opinión, ese estilo de películas las considero de "clase B", pero en esta oportunidad, hay buenas escenografías, buenas muertes y se nota un buen trabajo por parte de Michael Tiddes, director que ha trabajado con "Los Wayans" en trabajos anteriores. El trabajo de dirección y la manera en cómo los muchos guionistas idearon ciertas escenas, preferiblemente las de terror, y a pesar de ser parodias, las consideré buenas y me hizo pensar que tal vez estos hermanos deberían dejar por un tiempo la comedia y tal vez unirse por completo al género del terror, ya que, como se ha visto en otras ocasiones, quienes son considerados como comediantes, parece que tienen la facilidad de generar buenas producciones de terror.

The film’s direction and production are of a high standard, and although I noted those factors as positives, I was personally surprised because, in my opinion, I usually consider that style of film to be “B-movie” fare. However, in this case, there are well-designed sets, well-executed deaths, and you can see the solid work of Michael Tiddes, a director who has collaborated with the Wayans brothers on previous projects. The direction and the way the many screenwriters conceived certain scenes—especially the horror ones—were, despite being parodies, quite good in my view. It made me think that perhaps these brothers should put comedy aside for a while and fully embrace the horror genre, since, as we’ve seen on other occasions, those considered comedians seem to have a knack for creating good horror productions.

Mi primera y rápida opinión sobre Scary Movie es que fue una mala película y no he cambiado de opinión a pesar de señalar muchos aspectos positivos, por ejemplo la historia que, siendo una parodia, funciona porque encaja muy bien en lo hecho, no solamente en los dos primeros filmes bajo la tutela de los Wayans, sino en los otros tres anteriores filmes; lo otro es el aspecto generacional, que es un factor repetitivo en lo que son los revival, usando un grupo de actores jóvenes junto a los ya habituales o más reconocidos de la franquicia; también está lo relacionado a la dirección y producción ya descrita, como también las películas usadas a parodiar en esta película, pero a pesar de todo eso, Scary Movie 6 no me generó una constante risa, como pude señalar; solo hubo una escena que me hizo reír y hubo otra que me pareció uno de los mejores fanservice que he visto en hace un tiempo, pero en todo lo demás, me aburrió y por eso es de las peores películas dentro de la franquicia.

My initial, quick take on Scary Movie is that it was a bad movie, and I haven’t changed my mind despite pointing out many positive aspects—for example, the story, which, as a parody, works because it fits in so well with what’s been done before, not only in the first two films directed by the Wayans brothers but also in the three previous films; Another aspect is the generational element, which is a recurring factor in revivals, featuring a group of young actors alongside the franchise’s regulars or more well-known stars; there’s also the direction and production I’ve already described, as well as the films parodied in this movie, but despite all that, Scary Movie 6 didn’t keep me laughing consistently, as I’ve noted; there was only one scene that made me laugh, and another that struck me as one of the best examples of fan service I’ve seen in a while, but in every other respect, it bored me, which is why it’s one of the worst films in the franchise.
