Scream 7 - Movie Review [ES - EN]

Scream es una franquicia de terror que este año llega a su trigésimo aniversario; son tres décadas divididas (ahora) en siete películas en donde asesinos usan el manto de "Ghostface" para aterrorizar y acabar con las vidas de adolescentes y adultos, los cuales están relacionados con la verdadera protagonista de esta historia, "Sidney Prescott"; Esta franquicia en su momento revivió el género del Slasher. pero su inmediato desgaste, le hizo tomar una pausa de 11 años para así intentar actualizar la franquicia, pero lamentablemente el último trabajo del mítico director Wes Craven no captó la atención como sí lo hizo el primer film; esa poca atención llevó a un relanzamiento que sí generó una positiva atención, pero decisiones de productores y ahora dueños de la franquicia no quisieron seguir con quienes lideraban esta nueva etapa en Scream y decidieron que lo mejor sería regresar a las bases y para eso contaron no solo nuevamente con el protagonismo de su icónica "Final Girl", sino también con el regreso de su creador; me refiero a Kevin Williamson.

Unfortunately, the legendary director Wes Craven’s final film failed to capture the same attention as the first one; That lack of attention led to a reboot that did generate positive buzz, but decisions by producers and the current owners of the franchise meant they didn’t want to continue with those leading this new phase of Scream, and they decided it would be best to go back to basics. To do so, they relied not only on the return of their iconic “Final Girl” but also on the return of her creator; I’m referring to Kevin Williamson.

Está séptima película de Scream, estuvo envuelta en muchas polémicas lo cual generó rechazo por parte de nuevos críticos y del nuevo público que descubrió a está divertida y terrorífica historia por los dos anteriores filmes entrenados en el 2022 y 2023; a parte de esa lamentable situación para la franquicia, era de esperar de que para seguir con con el exito alcanzado gracias al relanzamiento, se usaría aún mas la nostalgia para dar continuación mas que nada a lo hecho en los cuatro primeros filmes y seguramente abriendo la posibilidad para que nuevos protagonistas se conviertan en rostros de sobrevivientes, víctimas o asesinos en futuros filmes; eso fue una idea más que esperada por quienes comandan en realidad a la franquicia; eso restó relevancia a los protagonistas y no tanto a los hechos ocurridos de los anteriores films y personalmente lo considero que fue lo mejor y la prueba eficiente de eso, fue que esta septima oarte sea la mas floja de la franquicia.

This seventh installment of Scream was mired in controversy, which led to backlash from new critics and audiences who had discovered this fun and terrifying story through the two previous films released in 2022 and 2023; Aside from that unfortunate situation for the franchise, it was to be expected that, to build on the success achieved thanks to the reboot, nostalgia would be leveraged even more to continue the narrative established in the first four films and likely open the door for new protagonists to become the faces of survivors, victims, or killers in future films; That was an idea eagerly anticipated by those who actually run the franchise; it downplayed the protagonists and focused more on the events of the previous films, and personally, I consider that to have been the best approach. The clearest proof of this is that this seventh installment is the weakest in the franchise.

Contar con el regreso de Williamson era de esperar, pero sí me sorprendió el hecho de que se eligiera como director y, en mi opinión, hizo un trabajo correcto, no el mejor, pero si acorde a lo que fue en gran parte el film; a pesar de crear la escena inicial más suave en la franquicia, las escenas de tensión aumentan en el transcurso del film, pero existe un gran problema cuando justamente la mejor escena está ubicada en el comienzo del segundo acto y que opaca lo que debe ser el caótico y mortífero final; este es lo que creo fue uno de los grandes problemas del film, ya que va creciendo en suspenso e intensidad, pero llega muy rápido al umbral de entretenimiento y pareciera no tener nada más que ofrecer; esto se refleja en muchas de las escenas en el acto final y en dónde solamente puedo señalar algunos pocos acontecimientos que me gustaron, pero que no generan un gran impacto.

The return of Williamson was to be expected, but I was surprised that he was chosen as director; in my opinion, he did a decent job—not the best, but in keeping with what the film largely was; despite creating the most subdued opening scene in the franchise, the tension builds as the film progresses, but there’s a major problem when the very best scene is placed at the beginning of the second act, overshadowing what should be the chaotic and deadly finale; This is what I believe was one of the film’s major problems, as it builds in suspense and intensity but reaches the entertainment threshold too quickly and seems to have nothing more to offer; this is reflected in many of the scenes in the final act, where I can only point to a few moments I liked, but which don’t make a big impact.

El guion en esta séptima película pareciera que tenía como finalidad el borrar (en parte) lo hecho en los dos anteriores filmes, aunque es cierto que se dio relevancia a algunos hechos de la sexta parte, pero más que nada esa relevancia fue para ofrecer una explicación sobre la ausencia de "Sidney" en la anterior historia; hago acotación de ese hecho porque el protagonismo y la importancia de "Sidney Prescott" en la franquicia es de lo que verdaderamente trata este nuevo film de Scream; es notorio en que Williamson aprovechó la oportunidad para demostrar a anteriores guionistas, directores, actores y al nuevo público en que esta historia y este film no es sobre quienes usan el manto de Ghostface, sino de quien ha motivado a muchos asesinos y lo cual considero que es algo correcto, pero esa relevancia e importancia de Sidney opaca tanto a los demás personajes que los convierte en prescindibles y sí, sé que este es un slasher y que el 90% de esos personajes deben morir, pero al ser un film en donde uno de sus temas es el saber quién o quiénes son los asesinos, no es bueno que ese suspenso pierda relevancia a causa de un pobre desarrollo de sus personajes.

The script for this seventh film seems to have been intended to (partially) undo what was done in the previous two films, although it’s true that certain events from the sixth installment were given prominence—but that prominence was mainly intended to explain “Sidney’s” absence from the previous story; I mention this fact because the centrality and importance of "Sidney Prescott" in the franchise is what this new Scream film is truly about; It’s clear that Williamson took the opportunity to show previous screenwriters, directors, actors, and the new audience that this story and this film aren’t about those who wear the Ghostface mask, but about the person who has inspired many killers—which I think is the right approach. However, Sidney’s prominence and importance overshadow the other characters so much that they become expendable. And yes, I know this is a slasher film and that 90% of those characters are supposed to die, but since one of the film’s central themes is figuring out who the killer(s) are, it’s not good for that suspense to lose its impact due to poor character development.

Antes de escribir esta reseña, leí una opinión que hizo referencia a que Scream como franquicia, no posee una película que sea considerada completamente mala; esa afirmación es cierta, pero esta última entrega del icónico Slasher es la más floja de todas por justamente no tener algo relevante de que pueda perdurar en la historia del género; anteriormente se pensó que la tercera parte fue la más floja, pero con todo lo que ha sucedido en Hollywood con sus abusos y demás polémica, lo cual es el tema base de ese film, creo que la convirtió en una de la favorita para los fans, asi como también la cuarta al ser la última de Craven, pero está nueva película en realidad no hay nada que rescatar y lamento que eso sea así porque para ser sincero tiene una primera mitad prometedora, con un buen uso de los personajes en escena, lo cual genera la inevitable pregunta "¿Quién es el asesino?" Y al tener correctas escenas de persecución y muertes hace que las expectativas crezcan, pero el decepcionante tercer y final acto es donde la película cae, y no tanto por los motivos y la revelación del asesino, sino por la necesidad de exaltar aún más la imagen de Sidney como la gran heroína; es ese en mi opinión el gran fallo porque no solamente hace más predecible a la película, sino también la hace aburrida.

Before writing this review, I read a comment that noted that the Scream franchise doesn’t have a single film that’s considered outright bad; that statement is true, but this latest installment of the iconic slasher series is the weakest of them all precisely because it lacks anything significant that will stand the test of time in the genre’s history; Previously, the third installment was thought to be the weakest, but with everything that has happened in Hollywood regarding abuse and other controversies—which is the central theme of that film—I think it became a fan favorite, as did the fourth, being the last by ** Craven**, but there’s really nothing to salvage in this new film, and I’m sorry that’s the case because, to be honest, it has a promising first half, with good use of the characters on screen, which raises the inevitable question, “Who is the killer?” And with well-executed chase scenes and deaths, it raises expectations, but the disappointing third and final act is where the film falls flat—not so much because of the motives or the killer’s revelation, but because of the need to further elevate Sidney’s image as the great heroine; that, in my opinion, is the major flaw because it not only makes the film more predictable but also makes it boring.
