ENGLISH

It seems that more and more productions related to solve a mystery are more evident in both movies and TV series; this year with series like "The Afterparty" and "Only Murders in the Building" have given fans of this genre good moments for how well made they are, since the basis of their stories is the comedy and I think that just this genre is perfectly complemented in a story where a mystery must be solved; clear examples are films like "Knieves Out" and "Glass Onion" soon to be released; now there is another film that also uses these elements and that for certain factors, its theatrical release went unnoticed and which was reviewed in this publication.

From the moment Disney bought 20th Century Fox, many productions that were under the production and distribution of the former film (and TV series) production company went unnoticed in theaters; it was evident that the new owners did not want to spare resources in promoting a work of which they had no part in any decision and regardless of the cost of each of these productions, they decided to release them to somehow receive some profit, either from the box office or from the subscription of streaming services; this path has been traveled by many films and one of those is "See How They Run ", a film that is within the mystery/comedy genre and tells the story set in England in 1953 where the play "The Mousetrap" written by "Agatha Christie" reached the centenary of performances in the theater; This made both producers of the play and film producers join forces to bring this story to the big screen, but what seems to be an adequate plan between producers, actors, screenwriter and director, the reality is different, since the struggle of egos and power creates a dilemma between the people involved in the project which may end in a criminal act, in a mystery where a detective and an inexperienced assistant will be in charge of clarifying.

This film is directed by Tom George who is more involved in directing episodes of TV series, makes his debut as a director of a feature film with this production; I liked his work although in my opinion imitates in many scenes the work of Wes Anderson; which in my opinion is perfect for this kind of films where the existence of many scenes with a lot of dialogues is one of its main characteristics and for that reason, that style of jumping from one scene to another and even splitting the screen to see the reaction of several characters about a single fact is a great decision because it helps the narrative, although despite what I have described, in my opinion showing so much influence of Anderson's work takes away quality although at the same time I can consider that it works for one of the themes within this film and that is about originality in a film production.

The screenplay was written by Mark Chappell who has the job as well as the director to show influence in what was done by Anderson; although as I said before, the theme of this story where there is a mystery to solve, is more about how entertainment in some moments seems that there is no morality; that phrase of The Show Must Go On, is very important in this film and I think that despite being set in 1953, in this current time has not changed absolutely nothing; this together with the intelligent and funny dialogues created by Chappell is what I liked the most. Regarding the mystery, I think there is not much importance of making the discovery difficult because, as I said, I think it is just an avenue to develop the real theme of the film, which I think is the real mystery to solve.

The performances are good, there are a number of characters, but I'm sticking with its three main protagonists, they are: Saoirse Ronan, Sam Rockwell and Adrien Brody; I like Saoirse's performance as the brave, enthusiastic and straightforward "Constable Stalker", she is a good protagonist and is a sample of the future, one unafraid to take chances even though that may lead her to make mistakes; the other character I found interesting was "Inspector Stoppard" played by Rockwell, a lonely, sad, boring man, but a good policeman, I found it interesting that he was someone deep in his work, although because of his loneliness he could be considered unreliable; now my favorite character of the film was "Leo Köpernick" played by Adrien Brody, his performance is very good in the short scenes he has, he is very funny, annoying, easy to hate, he is perfect for this story as well as the other two characters mentioned along with those who play them.

See How They Run is a small, short, direct, funny and in several moments intelligent film; I was very surprised how at times it mocks or criticizes the genre to which it belongs, but in my opinion it uses very well the clichés that characterize this type of films; despite this it is not perfect because it is very influenced by the way of directing by Wes Anderson although I know that there was the plan to have a notion that you were watching a play, but I think it could have used other ways in the direction and thus not be seen as a copy. I enjoyed this film because I didn't expect anything from this production and I was satisfied with the story and several of the performances; I recommend this film to anyone who enjoys the mystery genre and in my opinion it serves as a preamble for what will be "Glass Onion" in December.

I am a huge fan of movies that talk about murder, and mystery in the light of comedy, which is the reason I enjoyed the series Only Murder in the Building.

I also like this style of movies and this one is very good although the mystery in this film is somewhat easy to solve, that does not influence the quality of the story.

I hope that when you get to see it it will be to your liking.
