Sisu: Road to Revenge - Movie Review [ES - EN]

En el 2022, el director y guionista finlandés Jalmari Helander sorprendió a los fans del género de acción con "Sisu", lo que en ese momento fue su tercer film; esta fue una historia ambientada en 1944 donde seguimos a un hombre solitario que deberá defender un gran botín de oro contra un grupo de nazis, ese enfrentamiento genera una ola de violencia sin precedentes; justamente ese tipo de acción y el relato en sí de una historia nada original, pero sí muy directa, fue lo que generó gran aceptación y lo que sin ninguna duda impulsó el desarrollo de una secuela, y es que quién no quería ver más del ahora conocido como "Koshchei" (El Inmortal) destruir a cualquier enemigo que se interpusiera en su camino.

In 2022, Finnish director and screenwriter Jalmari Helander surprised action genre fans with "Sisu," which was his third film at the time. Set in 1944, it tells the story of a lone man who must defend a large cache of gold from a group of Nazis, a confrontation that sparks an unprecedented wave of violence. It was precisely this type of action and the story itself, which was not original but very direct, that generated widespread acceptance and undoubtedly prompted the development of a sequel. After all, who didn't want to see more of the now famous "Koshchei" (The Immortal) destroy any enemy that stood in his way.

En "Sisu: Road to Revenge" tenemos una secuela directa de su predecesora; es el claro ejemplo de las consecuencias generadas por los actos que realizó "Aatami Korpi" en anteriores combates, lo cual motiva a antiguos enemigos a querer obtener venganza de quien recibió un seudónimo y hasta el nombramiento de leyenda después de acabar con muchos integrantes del "Ejército Rojo"; esa necesidad de venganza hará que haga apariencia un enemigo que seguramente Aatami no esperaba encontrar y cuando sepa quién en realidad es, será el momento en dónde nuevamente El Inmortal surja; como pueden observar el desarrollo de esta historia o el relato en sí, no es lo más profundo o, como dije anteriormente, algo original y, para ser sincero, eso no importa porque lo que sí realmente debe tener relevancia son las escenas filmadas por Helander quien hace un gran trabajo haciendo lucir a su gran protagonista.

In "Sisu: Road to Revenge", we have a direct sequel to its predecessor; it is a clear example of the consequences generated by the actions of "Aatami Korpi" in previous battles, which motivates old enemies to seek revenge against the man who received a pseudonym and even the title of legend after killing many members of the "Red Army." This need for revenge will bring forth an enemy that Aatami surely did not expect to encounter, and when he finds out who this enemy really is, it will be the moment when The Immortal emerges once again. As you can see, the development of this story or the narrative itself is not the most profound or, as I said before, original, but to be honest, that doesn't matter because what really matters are the scenes filmed by Helander, who does a great job of making his main character shine.

A pesar de que la duración es de una hora y media, así como fue el primer film, en esta oportunidad Helander usa un esquema diferente en el momento de relatar la historia, esto al no usar una pausa de la acción a mitad del film, sino en el principio; esa fue una acertada decisión porque el protagonista necesita un nuevo motivo para seguir adelante y en esta oportunidad es correcto que se exploren sus sentimientos con respecto a su traumático y triste pasado, lo cual le impulsa a su actuación en esta historia; cabe destacar que en el momento en que finaliza la breve pausa, existe un ritmo trepidante, lo cual es formidable y es un aspecto que me ha gustado en esta secuela porque es como si existiera un extenso acto final, uno que no es aburrido y que está lleno de escenas satisfactorias, con acción y hasta momentos de muy buen uso del humor.

Although the film lasts an hour and a half, just like the first one, this time Helander uses a different approach to telling the story, with a break in the action at the beginning rather than in the middle. This was a wise decision because the protagonist needs a new reason to move forward, and this time it is appropriate to explore his feelings about his traumatic and sad past, which drives his actions in this story. It should be noted that when the brief pause ends, there is a fast-paced rhythm, which is formidable and an aspect that I liked in this sequel because it is as if there were an extended final act, one that is not boring and is full of satisfying scenes, with action and even moments of very good use of humor.

Para quien haya visto el primer film y para quien no, debe saber que los diálogos en esta película son muy pocos, más que nada con el personaje de "Aatami Korpi" interpretado por Jorma Tommila; en el primer film, su personaje está lleno completamente de odio y se nota, al momento de ir en contra de los nazis, su rostro lleno de rabia y la necesidad de drenar todo lo que siente de una manera violenta; es algo que me pareció excelente; ahora en la secuela, tiene que interpretar de una manera diferente a este personaje que después de pensar que su guerra personal llega a su fin, ahora debe primeramente huir para sobrevivir y después recobrar ese instinto de venganza para dar fin a una parte de su atormentado pasado; posiblemente creerán que al ser un film de acción, con una historia simple y directa, no existe un desarrollo correcto del personaje, pero Tommila en mi opinión, hace un mejor trabajo del que hizo en la anterior película. Anexo al renglón de actuación el excelente trabajo de Stephen Lang como "Yeagor Draganov", el principal antagonista, un gran villano que en muchas escenas se adueña del film y que fue una gran adquisición para esta secuela.

For those who have seen the first film and those who haven't, you should know that there is very little dialogue in this film, mostly with the character "Aatami Korpi" played by Jorma Tommila; In the first film, his character is completely filled with hatred, and you can see it when he goes up against the Nazis, his face full of rage and the need to vent everything he feels in a violent way; I thought that was excellent. Now, in the sequel, he has to play this character differently. After thinking that his personal war is coming to an end, he must first flee to survive and then regain that instinct for revenge to put an end to a part of his tormented past. You may think that, being an action film with a simple and straightforward story, there is no proper character development, but in my opinion, Tommila does a better job than he did in the previous film. I would also like to mention the excellent performance of Stephen Lang as "Yeagor Draganov," the main antagonist, a great villain who steals the show in many scenes and was a great addition to this sequel.

Sisu: Road to Revenge cumplió con todas mis expectativas; es una película que, cuando la acción comienza, no se detiene y eso es lo genial de esta secuela, junto a la suma de un buen antagonista, necesario para el relato vengativo que se anuncia en su título y que, de una manera muy bien desarrollada, impulsa el motivo vengativo del protagonista. Creo que estéticamente es más pulcra y con un mejor uso del CGI, y hay que nombrar que este film contó con un presupuesto nada extenso, pero a la vez se nota el cuidado para el desarrollo de muy buenas escenas de acción y, repito, esta película sabe cómo usar la pausa, el drama y el humor; justamente esto es algo que no esperaba que estuviera tan marcado, pero fue una grata sorpresa que no se tomara en serio ciertas cosas. En realidad, la pasé genial viendo (por fin) esta película y más aún pensando en mi padre, que lamentablemente no la pudo ver, pero estoy completamente seguro de que le hubiera encantado.

Sisu: Road to Revenge met all my expectations; it's a film that, once the action starts, doesn't let up, and that's what's great about this sequel, along with the addition of a good antagonist, necessary for the revenge story promised in the title, which, in a very well-developed way, drives the protagonist's desire for vengeance. I think it's more polished aesthetically and makes better use of CGI, and it's worth mentioning that this film had a very limited budget, but at the same time, you can see the care taken in developing very good action scenes and, I repeat, this film knows how to use pause, drama, and humor; this is something I didn't expect to be so prominent, but it was a pleasant surprise that it didn't take certain things too seriously. Actually, I had a great time watching this film (at last) and even more so thinking about my father, who unfortunately couldn't see it, but I'm completely sure he would have loved it.
