The Last of Us | "Look for the Light" - Episode Review [ESP|ENG]

Yesterday was the premiere of the end of the first season of The Last of Us; in this episode called "Look for the Light" we appreciate a direct, short story with a great emotional meaning, since first of all the barriers that Joel imposed on himself when he met Ellie are broken down and in this stage of his story he shows what she means to him and precisely that feeling will make him fight regardless of the consequences of his actions.

The episode is again directed by Ali Abbasi who directed the previous one; this time again uses flashbacks to explore the true origin of Ellie and I make reference to that part of the episode because I liked the decision to focus on the character of "Anna" and her state which provides difficulty and at the same time motivation to face a serious danger; that scene shows a great tension, but also the great emotion to give life and that seemed real to me, well directed, well acted and in so few minutes we see a clear explanation of what is this series where it does not need to show infected in all its dimension in each episode and if explore humanity in an apocalyptic world.

The story of the ninth episode is a fascinating closure of this story arc that narrates the journey that Joel and Ellie make; in this story is divided into moments where it focuses on the points of view of the two main protagonists and although the beginning of this episode shows us the origin of Ellie, it is evident that the main story is focused on showing what a mother or father must do to protect their children and that is why in this opportunity, the story of this first part of the series must be told by Joel. Throughout the season he shows us how the apocalypse affects those who have survived; he shows us how much they have lost, especially that great part of humanity and where hatred or desires are what control their lives, just as the Cordyceps controls the infected and that is evident in the way Joel acts, who has lost so much that he is willing to do anything to never lose again.

The flashbacks in this series were formidable, from the first two scenes in the first two episodes to the two episodes that work as a story about two love stories in an apocalyptic world is the best I have seen in a TV series in recent years; now in this episode there is a brief use of such themes where we see scenes of chase, tension and terror, but we will also see one where there is pure love between a mother and her daughter; This is possible because of the work of Abbasi as director and of course the performance of Ashley Johnson as "Anna"; I found the performance of Johnson convincing, both in determination, strength and then tenderness in caring for her newborn daughter; her performance as a mother is very good and this gives validity to everything that will happen in the rest of the episode. Regarding the acting of the main characters, I focused on what Pedro Pascal does who has the chance to be more vulnerable than he was in episode six and confide his feelings to Ellie which he adopts completely after how she saved his life. This episode has a very good performance by Pascal who leaves once again in evidence that his character does not have a stable mentality and it is understandable because of all the traumas he has lived through, but what is understandable is that his actions can be "accepted" because no one would allow losing the one he loves even if it means saving the world.

With the premiere of "Look for the Light" I must say that it is rare that a series has in a whole season so many good episodes; the work done by Manzin and Druckmann is exceptional and makes this first season of The Last of Us the best action-real version based on a video game; they know how to represent on the small screen a story full of drama, with characters full of pain for irreparable losses, but willing to heal their wounds; to that, I add the care to recreate iconic scenes of the video game that are not only the expected easter eggs, but that have importance in the narrative; these ideas, the way of using good directors who believe in the story made by the above mentioned, is an example of doing a good job and create a story that can be based on the one made in other productions, but differs in demonstrating what is important to tell and just this last episode of the first season is a great example of that; it does not forget what caused the end of the world we know, it does not forget the motives of those who survive to recover the world, it does not forget the creatures, but it does not leave behind what in my opinion makes it connect with many people and that is the story about how despite suffering the apocalypse, humanity in one way or another must prevail, not just survive by any means and although it sounds simplistic, love is the only way to heal any loss that has been experienced; that way of telling this story makes me have the thought or opinion that this is one of the best seasons of a series in the history of television and not that makes me have expectations about what this story will be in the future.

I find it probably the best episodes of all, the scene where Joel kills everyone really looks like out of the game but I cant wait to watch Ellie find out about Joel lies jejeje

That "This is the best episode of the season" line I said every Sunday, but yes I agree it's very good.

That scene of Joel in full Terminator mode, with a low volume with respect to the shots, I relate it to the scene where Marlene asks her partner to plug the ears of baby Elli so she doesn't hear the shots, maybe I'm overanalyzing that scene, but I can't find any other reason why it was done that way.

I think joel lying to Ellie is probably gonna bite him in the ass in the future. I think this is one of the best episodes I’ve watched so far. Thank you for sharing.

avatar

Surely the consequences of his actions at the end of that episode will be the reference in the second season; both in the relationship with Ellie and in a war with the Fireflies.

avatar
