The Running Man (2025) - Movie Review [ES - EN]

"The Running Man", se estrenó en noviembre pasado, dirigido y co escrito por Edgar Wright y protagonizado por Glen Powell; la película es basada en un novela escrita en 1985 por Stephen King que lleva el mismo nombre, está historia cuenta con una anterior versión cinematográfica estrenada a finales de los ochenta, protagonizada por Arnold Schwarzenegger la se inclina a ser plenamente en film de acción y se aleja del relato original de la historia, pero en esta nueva versión, se influencia mucho más al matwrial original mostrando a los Estados Unidos distopico en dónde existe una clara e importante división de sociedades lo cual lleva a los más necesitados a participar en "Reality Shows" para poder obtener el dinero que les pueda cambiar de vida, pero existe una particularidad y es que ese tipo de programas televisivos no son para nada fácil, ya que la vida de cada participante está puesta en peligro y eso hará que cada hombre o mujer deba huir de la sociedad y cazadores letales para sobrevivir y posiblemente ganar.

The Running Man, released last November, directed and co-written by Edgar Wright and starring Glen Powell, is based on a 1985 novel of the same name by Stephen King. The story was previously adapted for film in the late 1980s, starring _** Arnold Schwarzenegger**. That version leaned heavily toward action and strayed from the original story, but this new version is much more influenced by the original material, showing a dystopian United States where there is a clear and significant division between social classes, leading the most disadvantaged to participate in "reality shows" in order to win money that could change their lives. However, there is one peculiarity: these types of television programs are not easy at all, as the lives of each participant are put in danger, forcing each man or woman to flee from society and lethal hunters in order to survive and possibly win.

Mentiría si digo que no tenía expectativas de ver la visión de Wright con The Running Man, en mi opinión y después de lo realizado en "Baby Driver", creo que era la opción adecuada para recrear la persecución que debería experimentar el protagonista de la historia y, en las pocas escenas de acción, creo que se hizo un trabajo correcto, pero para nada impresionante o que alcanzara mis expectativas; creo que la necesidad de ser fiel al material original posiblemente privó al director de hacer otra versión llena de acción y, en cambio, se profundizó en el relato sobre la lucha de clases que es la verdadera base de la historia.

I would be lying if I said I had no expectations of seeing Wright's vision with The Running Man. In my opinion, and after what he did in Baby Driver, I think he was the right choice to recreate the chase that the protagonist of the story should experience, and in the few action scenes, I think he did a decent job, but it was by no means impressive or did it meet my expectations. I think the need to be faithful to the original material may have prevented the director from making another action-packed version, and instead, he delved deeper into the story of class struggle, which is the true basis of the story.

El guion escrito tanto por Wright y Michael Bacall, trata de ser lo masl fiel a lo escrito por King hace 40 años, creo que justamente eso es lo que más me gusta de tipo de historia distopicas que se piensa en un posible futuro en dónde la sociedad es víctima de sus vicios o de diferentes prácticas nocivas y al momento de llegar a la época en dónde se desarrolla originalmente la historia, apesar de no vivir actualmente en un mundo tan futurista, me sororende que una idea o historia escrita en los 80' se sienta tan actual; esa en mi opinión es lo que más me ha gustado en esta película que profundiza en los motivos de su protagonista, así como en quienes lo impulsan a poner en riesgo su vida para entretenimiento de otros.

The script, written by both Wright and Michael Bacall, tries to be as faithful as possible to what King wrote 40 years ago. I think that's what I like most about dystopian stories that imagine a possible future where society is a victim of its vices or various harmful practices. And when we reach the time period in which the story originally takes place, even though we don't currently live in such a futuristic world, I'm surprised that an idea or story written in the 1980s feels so current. In my opinion, that is what I liked most about this film, which delves into the motives of its protagonist, as well as those who drive him to risk his life for the entertainment of others.

Estoy convencido de que uno de los puntos positivos de esta película es el casting; me gustó la interpretación de Glen Powell como "Ben Richards", me convenció su rol de hombre que debe cumplir con el rol de proveedor, protector y que está dispuesto a ser lo posible e imposible para dar estabilidad a su familia, pero su rebeldía le hace fallar en como padre de familia y eso genera tanta frustración que se le es difícil de controlar la rabia que no puede dejar de sentir; me pareció correcto su actuación, es divertida, aunque creo que me hubiera gustado ver más dramatismo del personaje, pero creo que es víctima de una errónea escritura del personaje en ese ámbito; otro personaje que es muy importante en la historia es "Dan Killian" interpretado por Josh Brolin, que en mi opinión hace de un excelente villano, es el diablo en el hombre convenciendo a quien sea de vender su alma y es muy bueno haciendo eso; es un personaje igual de divertido y creo que hay un excelente complemento entre ambos actores para hacer funcionar este film y lamento que esa química no exista con otros personajes, sean antagonistas o hasta aliados del protagonista.

I am convinced that one of the strengths of this film is the casting; I liked Glen Powell's performance as Ben Richards. I was convinced by his role as a man who must fulfill the role of provider and protector and who is willing to do everything possible and impossible to provide stability for his family, but his rebelliousness causes him to fail as a father, and that generates so much frustration that it is difficult for him to control the anger he cannot help but feel. I thought his performance was good, it's entertaining, although I think I would have liked to see more drama from the character, but I think he is a victim of poor character writing in that area. Another character who is very important in the story is "Dan Killian," played by Josh Brolin, who, in my opinion, makes an excellent villain. He is the devil in man, convincing anyone to sell their soul, and he is very good at it. He is an equally entertaining character, and I think the two actors complement each other perfectly to make this film work. I regret that this chemistry does not exist with other characters, whether they are antagonists or even allies of the protagonist.

Lamento que no me gustará mucho esta película, ya que es de esas producciones que tienen mucho potencial, pero que no termina de alcanzarlo porque pareciera que mientras ocurría el rodaje se hizo cambios para posiblemente alegrar a las masas y sí eso ocurrió de esa manera, creo que fue una gran equivocacion porque se traiciona a si mismo al hacer cambios que no potencian a la historia; aunque si tenga opiniones negativas sobre está nueva versión de The Running Man, valoro muchos aspectos, más que nada el acierto de este tipo de historias distopicas que sin importar que tiempo tiene de ser escritas, de alguna manera sigue siendo muy actual y es la misma sensación que tuve al ver "The Long Walk" (también de _King), son historias que lamentablemente duran en el tiempo, son acertadas lo cual siempre me genera preocupación y posiblemente esa sea el verdadero potencial de un film al que creo que muchos esperaban que fuera la típica película de acción.

I regret that I won't like this movie very much, as it's one of those productions that has a lot of potential but fails to reach it because it seems that during filming, changes were made to possibly please the masses. If that's what happened, I think it was a big mistake because it betrays itself by making changes that don't enhance the story. Although I have negative opinions about this new version of The Running Man, I do appreciate many aspects of it, especially the accuracy of this type of dystopian story, which, regardless of when it was written, somehow remains very relevant today. It's the same feeling I had when I saw "The Long Walk" (also by ** King**). These are stories that unfortunately stand the test of time; they are accurate, which always worries me, and that is possibly the true potential of a film that I think many expected to be a typical action movie.
