The Zone of Interest - Movie Review [ES - EN]

La existencia de películas basadas en el holocausto, muestran historias crudas y fuertes, las cuales funcionan como relatos de eventos lamentables de una época que nunca debería repetirse; la mayoría de estas producciones son desde el punto de vista de millones de víctimas y de sus sobrevivientes y algunas pocas, por lo menos de las que he visto, están hechas desde el punto de vista de los victimarios; películas de diferentes géneros como drama, acción, thrillers y hasta parodias, son las usadas para enseñar parte de una historia de terror que es parte de la humanidad, justamente es eso lo que considero que es la película que hago reseña en esta publicación, una historia más del terror en la época de Nazis.

The existence of films based on the holocaust, show raw and strong stories, which function as accounts of regrettable events of a time that should never be repeated; most of these productions are from the point of view of millions of victims and their survivors and a few, at least the ones I have seen, are made from the point of view of the perpetrators; films of different genres such as drama, action, thrillers and even parodies, are used to show part of a history of terror that is part of humanity, and that is exactly what I consider the film I am reviewing in this publication to be, another history of terror in the Nazi era.

"The Zone of Interest", película originalmente estrenada en el pasado Cannes Film Festival quien después se dividió en tres estrenos en las salas de cine, primeramente a finales del 2023 en Estados Unidos y a principios de este año en el Reino Unido y Polonia, siendo estos dos últimos los países de origen de los productores de este film que actualmente está nominado a cinco Primos de la Academia, entre ellos al de Mejor Película. Su historia relata la vida de la "Familia Höss", conformada por "Rudolf Höss", su esposa "Hedwig" y sus cinco hijos; ellos son una familia que vive los beneficios de la posición que tiene Rudolf en el gobierno, una gran casa, mascota, jardín, piscina, servidumbre y respeto, pero todo eso puede cambiar cuando una orden del alto mando decide que Rudolf deba dejar su puesto como director del Campo de Concentración de Auschwitz.

"The Zone of Interest", a film originally premiered at the last Cannes Film Festival, which was later divided into three theatrical releases, first at the end of 2023 in the United States and early this year in the United Kingdom and Poland, the latter two being the countries of origin of the producers of this film, which is currently nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Its story tells the life of the "Höss Family", formed by "Rudolf Höss", his wife "Hedwig" and their five children; they are a family that lives the benefits of the position that Rudolf has in the government, a big house, pet, garden, swimming pool, servitude and respect, but all that can change when an order from the high command decides that Rudolf must leave his position as director of the Auschwitz Concentration Camp.

Mi interés por este film se da al momento de leer la sinopsis; inmediatamente pensé que está es una manera diferente de relatar un evento más que conocido, ya que explora el punto de vista no solamente de victimarios, sino de una pareja que tiene una "vida normal" en un hogar que está situada al lado de un campo de concentración en dónde murieron más de tres millones de personas; esta posible simpleza en presentar este film esconde un desarrollo en dónde la normalidad de una vida familiar esconde el terror que tiene justamente a un lado y es lo fascinante e incómodo de esta producción; es la manera demostrar tal como pudo describirlo Steven Spielberg, "La Banalidad del Mal" y esa es la manera perfecta de referirse sobre esta producción escrita y dirigida por Jonathan Glazer.

El trabajo direccional de Glazer pareciera ser simple en un principio, pero la realidad es que se toma el tiempo para mostrar ciertas tomas que nos van preparando para el desenlace de la historia. Existe un gran trabajo con respecto a filmar escenas en dónde todo se ve plano y pareciera estar viendo una obra teatral, pero lo que más me llamó la atención es las escenas en dónde el enfoque de un objeto hace que se cree profundidad en la escena, este es una práctica que toma más relevancia mientras va acercándose al final; me gustó mucho la manera de editar ciertas escenas, dónde una perspectiva tanto en el interior como el exterior de la casa porque de una manera la convierte en una protagonista más, es un objeto de poder, es un objeto de terror; este es el segundo film que veo dirigido por Glazer y quede fascinado.

My interest in this film is given when I read the synopsis; I immediately thought that this is a different way to relate a more than known event, as it explores the point of view not only of the victimizers, but of a couple that has a "normal life" in a home that is located next to a concentration camp where more than three million people died; this possible simplicity in presenting this film hides a development where the normality of a family life hides the terror that is right next to it and that is what is fascinating and uncomfortable about this production; it is the way to demonstrate as Steven Spielberg could describe it, "The Banality of Evil" and that is the perfect way to refer to this production written and directed by Jonathan Glazer.

The directional work by Glazer appears to be simple at first, but the reality is that he takes the time to show certain shots that set us up for the story's denouement. There is a great job with respect to filming scenes where everything looks flat and it seems to be watching a play, but what caught my attention is the scenes where the focus of an object creates depth in the scene, this is a practice that becomes more relevant as it approaches the end; I really liked the way of editing certain scenes, where a perspective both inside and outside the house because in a way it turns it into another protagonist, it is an object of power, it is an object of terror; this is the second film I've seen directed by Glazer and I was fascinated.

Cómo he dicho en anterioridad, la historia es relatada desde el punto de vista de una pareja quienes deben lidiar con lo cotidiano de sus responsabilidades, tanto en el trabajo como el del hogar, el asunto es que el trabajo es dirigir un campo de concentración y el hogar queda justamente al lado de dicho lugar; no hay manera de sentir un rechazo al pensar y escribir sobre eso y todo es debido a la actuación que realiza Christian Friedel como "Rudolf Höss" y de Sandra Hüller como "Hedwig Höss"; para describir el trabajo de Friedel puedo comenzar en que su actitud dentro de su hogar es de libertad y calma cuando está solo, demuestra un control ante todo, pero también la frustración a no ser verdaderamente reconocido por el puesto que ejerce, eso al frente de su gobierno y el de su esposa, persona que en mi opinión no esconde el orgullo de mantener el estatus que posee, disfruta lo que tiene y no piensa en perderlo; el personaje de Hedwig no esconde ser pasional con respecto a lo que representa, en cambio, Rudolf posee una tranquilidad y control al estar con sus iguales y subordinados, para así mantener una posición muy beneficiosa y esto por supuesto que demuestra diferencia entre ellos, pero también demuestra la maldad que practican solo por cómo ellos lo señalan, "vivir un sueño".

As I have said before, the story is told from the point of view of a couple who must deal with their daily responsibilities, both at work and at home, the thing is that the work is running a concentration camp and the home is right next to it; there is no way to feel a rejection when thinking and writing about it and it is all due to the performance of Christian Friedel as "Rudolf Höss" and of Sandra Hüller as "Hedwig Höss"; to describe the work of Friedel I can begin in that his attitude within his home is one of freedom and calm when he is alone, he demonstrates control above all, but also frustration at not being truly recognized for the position he holds, that in front of his government and that of his wife, a person who in my opinion does not hide the pride of maintaining the status he holds, enjoys what he has and does not think of losing it; Hedwig's character does not hide being passionate about what she represents, on the other hand, Rudolf has a calmness and control to be with his equals and subordinates, in order to maintain a very beneficial position and this of course shows the difference between them, but also shows the evil they practice just for how they say, "living a dream".

The Zone of Interest es un corto, pero poderoso film, es una historia que no trata de minimizar, ni suavizar lo referente al holocausto; este es un film que demuestra la normalidad de los viles actos cometidos hacia millones de personas, sus planes de exterminio, la normalidad y facilidad de como hacen referencia a ciertas prácticas mortales, su influencia en la vida de los jóvenes, su uso errado del poder, la imposición y el terror, creo que está es una de las historias más crudas sobre el holocausto y en dónde no hay necesidad de mostrar lo que se le hizo a cada víctima de esos campos, solo con los sonidos, gritos, quejas, disparos, ver el humo de los hornos crematorios fue suficiente para ver todo el mal que se hizo, eso hace que este film sea incómodo, molesto y a la vez con un mensaje poderoso y es por eso que cada quien debería de ver este film, no es solo uno de los mejores del pasado año y del actual, debe ser uno a considerar en el futuro como muchos otros.

The Zone of Interest is a short, but powerful film, it is a story that does not try to minimize or soften the holocaust; this is a film that demonstrates the normality of the vile acts committed against millions of people, their extermination plans, the normality and ease of how they refer to certain deadly practices, their influence on the lives of young people, their misuse of power, imposition and terror, I think this is one of the rawest stories about the holocaust and where there is no need to show what was done to each victim of those camps, just with the sounds, screams, complaints, gunshots, seeing the smoke from the crematoria ovens was enough to see all the evil that was done, that makes this film uncomfortable, disturbing and at the same time with a powerful message and that is why everyone should see this film, it is not only one of the best of the past year and the current one, it should be one to consider in the future like many others.
