They Will Kill You - Movie Review [ES - EN]

Siguiendo con la idea de reseñar las muchas películas estrenadas en este año que son parte del género de supervivencia, en esta oportunidad les traigo una película que muchos consideraron como una grata sorpresa; me refiero a "They Will Kill You" que fue estrenada el pasado mes de marzo y que relata la historia de "Asia Reaves", una mujer que acepta el trabajo de mucama en un gran hotel llamado "The Virgil", en donde todo parece ser perfecto, pero la realidad es que ese lugar esconde un secreto infernal que desde el primer momento pondrá en peligro su vida, llevándola a enfrentar tanto a jefes, empleados e inquilinos para poder sobrevivir.

Continuing with the idea of reviewing the many survival-genre films released this year, this time I’m bringing you a movie that many considered a pleasant surprise; I’m referring to "They Will Kill You", which was released last March and tells the story of “Asia Reaves,” a woman who takes a job as a maid at a large hotel called “The Virgil,” where everything seems perfect, but the reality is that the place hides a hellish secret that, from the very first moment, will put her life in danger, forcing her to confront bosses, employees, and guests alike in order to survive.

Este film tuvo como premisa ser considerada como la unión entre "The Raid" y "Ready or Not" y, personalmente, con tan solo esa definición me había convencido en verla, aunque también debo decir que mis expectativas eran muy bajas. La dirección fue de Kirill Sokolov, quien escribió el guion junto a Alex Litvak y, en mi opinión, hizo un buen trabajo en ambos roles; primeramente, en la dirección me gustó lo amplio de las escenas a pesar de llevarse a cabo en pasillos o corredizos muy estrechos; eso fue un gran acierto pensando en el espectador para disfrutar las secuencias de acción. Las escenas de peleas, a pesar de ser sumamente entretenidas, creo que pudieron tener una mejor coreografía, ya que se nota la lentitud de actores y afecta el desarrollo de los combates; aprecio mucho el uso del gore y lo gráfico de muchas escenas, lo cual es perfecto para esta película, así como el uso de colores vivos, lo cual me pareció genial; disfruté en mayor parte el trabajo de Sokolov.

This film was billed as a cross between "The Raid" and "Ready or Not," and personally, that description alone was enough to convince me to watch it, though I must also admit that my expectations were very low. The film was directed by Kirill Sokolov, who co-wrote the screenplay with Alex Litvak, and in my opinion, he did a good job in both roles; first, in terms of direction, I liked how expansive the scenes felt despite taking place in very narrow hallways or corridors; that was a great choice for letting the audience enjoy the action sequences. The fight scenes, despite being extremely entertaining, could have had better choreography, as the actors’ sluggishness is noticeable and affects the flow of the combat; I really appreciate the use of gore and the graphic nature of many scenes, which is perfect for this film, as well as the use of vivid colors, which I thought was great; I mostly enjoyed Sokolov’s work.

La historia es lo que más me ha gustado del film; el relato de una mujer que se hizo fuerte a causa de traumas del pasado y eso sin saberlo la ha preparado para enfrentar una inesperada amenaza, es mucho más atrayente que la premisa por la cual se promocionó el film. Un punto importante en el guion es el excelente uso del terror, la acción y el humor; este último es un factor bastante influyente en el relato, aunque eso sí, su uso no la convierte en una parodia o en un film netamente cómico, ya que es un ingrediente más que hace fluir muy bien las escenas gráficas que ofrece el film; otro punto positivo es el desarrollo de los personajes, los cuales tienen el momento preciso para relatar su historia y nos ofrecen lo necesario para entender lo que ocurre en el film; cada uno de los relatos funciona muy bien porque, al final, no es un simple producción en dónde existe una constante batalla que puede desgastar al espectador, sino se toma la pausa necesaria para un relato entretenido y así seguir con las secuencias de peleas y demás; realmente me sorprendió el como está escrito y desarrollada la historia.

The story is what I liked most about the film; the tale of a woman who grew strong because of past traumas—and who, without realizing it, was prepared to face an unexpected threat—is far more compelling than the premise the film was marketed on. A key strength of the screenplay is its excellent use of horror, action, and humor; the latter is a fairly influential factor in the story, though its use doesn’t turn it into a parody or a purely comedic film, as it’s just another ingredient that helps the film’s graphic scenes flow very well; another positive aspect is the character development, as each character has the right moment to tell their story and provides us with what we need to understand what’s happening in the film; Each of the stories works very well because, ultimately, it isn’t a simple production where there’s a constant battle that can wear the viewer down; instead, it takes the necessary pauses for an entertaining narrative and then continues with the fight sequences and the rest. I was truly surprised by how the story is written and developed.

El trabajo de Zazie Beetz es bueno, es una actriz muy versátil y en este caso tiene la actitud y la fuerza para interpretar a "Asia" quien es una mujer formada desde el trauma del maltrato familiar y la necesidad de solventar el daño que pudo ocasionar. Es, como se le define en algún momento en el film, una "vengadora" y es ahí donde demuestra la versatilidad en momentos de fuerza, valentía, pero a su vez, demuestra miedo y vulnerabilidad, pero su característica principal es la convicción, su motivación por sobrevivir, lo que hace que demuestre fiereza al momento de pelear. Me gustó mucho su personaje, que está bien escrito y, por supuesto, muy bien interpretado.

Zazie Beetz gives a strong performance; she is a very versatile actress, and in this case, she brings the attitude and strength needed to portray "Asia," a woman shaped by the trauma of domestic abuse and the need to make amends for the harm she may have caused. She is, as she is described at one point in the film, an “avenger,” and that is where she demonstrates her versatility in moments of strength and courage, yet at the same time, she shows fear and vulnerability; however, her defining trait is her conviction—her drive to survive—which makes her fierce when she fights. I really liked her character, who is well-written and, of course, very well-played.

Es muy cierto que They Will Kill You fue una grata sorpresa; es un film bastante entretenido, muy divertido, con una historia simple, pero a la vez muy desarrollada, que primeramente lucha por no ser tan completamente predecible al tener algún que otro giro argumental que funciona muy bien. Esta es una película que sabe usar diferentes géneros, lo cual le da momentos a varios personajes para ser líderes en sus escenas y eso me ha gustado porque pudiera tener esa simpleza en definir a sus personajes y encasillarlos en el bueno, el malo, el tonto, el fuerte y así, pero decidieron dar profundidad, un motivo real a ciertos personajes en una historia sobrenatural. Creo que es un muy buen complemento a esta película de acción que, repito, pudo ser mejor en las coreografías de las peleas, pero de igual manera son bastante entretenidas. Existe otro aspecto que me agradó de este film y es que me hizo sentir que estaba viendo alguna que otra producción del 2000, esas películas de acción y terror que son basadas en cómics o novelas gráficas. Posiblemente, si esta película se hubiera estrenado en esa época, hubiera alcanzado un mayor éxito que la hubiera convertido en una franquicia.

It’s certainly true that They Will Kill You was a pleasant surprise; it’s a pretty entertaining, very funny film with a simple yet well-developed story that strives to avoid being completely predictable by throwing in the occasional plot twist that works really well. This is a film that knows how to blend different genres, which gives various characters moments to take the lead in their scenes, and I liked that because it could have taken the easy route of defining its characters and pigeonholing them as the good guy, the bad guy, the fool, the strong one, and so on, but instead chose to give depth and a real motivation to certain characters within a supernatural story. I think it’s a great addition to this action movie, which, I’ll say again, could have been better in terms of the fight choreography, but the fights are still pretty entertaining. There’s another aspect I liked about this film, and that is that it made me feel like I was watching one of those productions from the 2000s—those action-horror movies based on comics or graphic novels. Perhaps if this film had been released back then, it would have achieved greater success that could have turned it into a franchise.
