Totally Killer - Movie Review [ES - EN]

Desde hace un buen tiempo he visto films del género Slasher que se complementan muy bien a otros géneros como es el de la comedia oscura, ciencia-ficción y viajes en el tiempo o que usan el tiempo como un elemento importante; puedo citar películas como "Detention" (2011), "The Final Girls" (2015) y "Happy Death Day" (2017); estos son claros ejemplos que usan las características antes citadas para hacer una producción entretenida que principalmente trate de respetar las reglas impuestas en este estilo de films. Personalmente, tengo debilidad por este tipo de películas y es por eso que estaba interesado en reseñar la película, original de Amazon Prime Video y producida (en esta oportunidad) por "Blumhouse Television".

For quite some time now I have seen films of the Slasher genre that complement very well to other genres such as dark comedy, sci-fi and time travel or that use time as an important element; I can cite films like "Detention" (2011), "The Final Girls" (2015) and "Happy Death Day" (2017); these are clear examples that use the above mentioned characteristics to make an entertaining production that mainly tries to respect the rules imposed in this style of films. Personally, I have a weakness for this type of films and that is why I was interested in reviewing the film, original from Amazon Prime Video and produced (in this opportunity) by "Blumhouse Television".

"Totally Killer" es un slasher/comedia oscura, que nos relata la vida de "Jamie", una chica de 16 años que vive en el pequeño pueblo de "North Vernon", un lugar que pareciera que no sucede nada, pero en realidad si, ya que en una noche de Halloween, la aparición de un asesino conocido como "Sweet Sixteen Killer" creó una gran conmoción entre los habitantes de ese tranquilo lugar; 35 años pasaron de tan horrible hecho y la tranquilidad en que vivían los habitantes de Vernon, se verá interrumpida cuando nuevamente ese asesino decide regresar y tomar una inesperada víctima, la madre de Jamie; eso hará que nuestra joven protagonista deberá hacer lo imposible como es viajar al pasado para detener a un vil asesino, pero deberá hacerlo rápido porque si no podrá terminar atrapada en ese lugar; esto se convertirá en una carrera para sobrevivir a otra época y a un incógnito asesino.

"Totally Killer" is a slasher/dark comedy that tells the story of the life of "Jamie", a 16 year old girl who lives in the small town of "North Vernon", a place where it seems that nothing happens, but in reality it does, because one Halloween night, the appearance of a murderer known as "Sweet Sixteen Killer" created a great commotion among the inhabitants of this quiet place; 35 years have passed since that horrible event and the tranquility in which the inhabitants of Vernon lived, will be interrupted when again that murderer decides to return and take an unexpected victim, Jamie's mother; that will make our young protagonist must do the impossible as it is to travel to the past to stop a vile murderer, but she must do it quickly because if she can not end up trapped in that place; this will become a race to survive another time and an incognito murderer.

A pesar de que este film presenta géneros del cine que me agradan, tenía expectativas bajas porque temía que puede ser de esas producciones en dónde la premisa parece ser correcta, pero su ejecución no ser la mejor. Esta es una película pequeña, simple y eso creo que es perfecto para este tipo de films que ser de clase B no debería ser un problema; con respecto al trabajo de la directora Nahnatchka Khan quien cumple este rol por segunda ocasión, opino que hace correctas escenas en dónde el asesino hace presencia; me gusta que a pesar de ser una comedia, respete las escenas de terror dando valor y fuerza a las escenas de los ataques; esto es uno de los puntos positivos del film; me gustó mucho el cómo se demuestra a un pasional y agresivo asesino, el cual usa una muy buena máscara.

El guion es lo que menos me ha gustado porque no es consecuente con las características que presenta el film, la principal es que es vista como una comedia y en ese género no funciona, no da risa, los personajes no están bien escritos, es como ver una misma versión en diferentes personajes y por eso también falla en lo que es las películas Slasher; lo otro es que a pesar de "profundizar" o de tratar de desarrollar de mejor manera todo lo referente a los viajes en el tiempo, creo que pierde fuerza al momento en que muchos sucesos ocurren porque sí, la conveniencia de la historia es algo que me pareció exagerado y sé que está es una historia rápida, pero se puedo escribir mejor.

Although this film presents genres of cinema that I like, I had low expectations because I feared that it may be one of those productions where the premise seems to be correct, but its execution may not be the best. This is a small, simple film and that I think is perfect for this kind of films that being B class should not be a problem; regarding the work of the director Nahnatchka Khan who plays this role for the second time, I think she makes correct scenes where the killer is present; I like that despite being a comedy, she respects the horror scenes giving value and strength to the scenes of the attacks; this is one of the positive points of the film; I really liked how a passionate and aggressive killer is shown, who wears a very good mask.

The script is what I liked the least because it is not consistent with the characteristics of the film, the main one is that it is seen as a comedy and in that genre does not work, it does not give laughter, the characters are not well written, it's like seeing the same version in different characters and therefore also fails in what is the Slasher movies; The other thing is that in spite of "going deeper" or trying to develop in a better way everything related to time travel, I think it loses strength when many events happen just because, the convenience of the story is something that seemed exaggerated and I know this is a fast story, but it could be written better.

La necesidad en que en este tipo de films tanto la "Final Girl" y el Asesino funcione es necesario y creo que el personaje de "Jamie" Interpretado por Kiernan Shipka, es otro punto positivo de esta producción; me gusta que sea independiente, fuerte y decidida, eso no evita que en momentos se comporte como una víctima, pero hay que recordar que enfrenta a un violento y vil asesino, la interpretación de Kiernan es la correcta y en dónde creo que falla es en los diálogos cómicos y no la culpo a ella porque en este caso es una víctima fatal del guion; me hubiera gustado que se complementará más con otros personajes, pero nuevamente, el guion evita que eso suceda y creo que para esta historia esto era algo necesario. No haré referencia a ningún otro desempeño de otro actor, no hay ninguno otro que destaque y ese es otro aspecto negativo de esta película.

The need in this kind of films for both the "Final Girl" and the Killer to work is necessary and I think the character of "Jamie" played by Kiernan Shipka, is another positive point of this production; I like that she is independent, strong and determined, that does not prevent her from behaving like a victim at times, but we must remember that she faces a violent and vile killer, the interpretation of Kiernan is the right one and where I think she fails is in the comic dialogues and I do not blame her because in this case she is a fatal victim of the script; I would have liked her to complement more with other characters, but again, the script prevents that from happening and I think that for this story this was something necessary. I won't reference any other actor's performance, there are no other standouts and that's another negative aspect of this film.

Siendo sincero, "Totally Killer" es un film regular, es una lástima porque tiene las características para ser un buen film, no original, pero si un buen film y lamentablemente no tiene una buena ejecución en sus tres principales características, creo que se queda corta en desarrollar cada una de sus tres elementos, principalmente la comedia la cual no funciona en nada; con respecto a ser una película de terror o Slasher cumple con lo principal en tener a un buen asesino al que me gustó el diseño, la máscara es genial, también me gustó su protagonista, me pareció ideal para esta historia; ahora en lo que falla es en no respetar las demás reglas con respecto a otros personajes, principalmente en las víctimas en dónde todas son iguales, tal vez esa era la intención, pero no me gustó y creo que es debido a lo mala que es la comedia; para cerrar haré referencia al aspecto de los viajes en el tiempo; muchos hicieron referencia a la influencia de "Volver al Futuro" y tienen mucha razón, creo que existe más influencia en esa película que otra más, mi problema es que todo se justifica de una manera tan sencilla que en vez de homenaje o influencia, demuestra ser una errada parodia, aunque no todo es malo porque hay elementos que me sorprendieron y que me gustaron de ver y eso me hizo pensar que existían muy buenas ideas en este film, pero que lamentablemente no se desarrollaron de la mejor manera. A pesar de no tener una opinión netamente positiva del film, la recomiendo de verla, es corta, rápida, tiene correctas escenas de terror y está disponible en Amazon Prime Video.

To be honest, "Totally Killer " is a regular film, it is a pity because it has the characteristics to be a good film, not original, but a good film and unfortunately it does not have a good execution in its three main characteristics, I think it falls short in developing each of its three elements, mainly the comedy which does not work at all; with respect to being a horror or Slasher film it fulfills the main thing in having a good killer who I liked the design, the mask is great, I also liked its protagonist, I thought it was ideal for this story; now where it fails is in not respecting the other rules with respect to other characters, mainly in the victims where they are all the same, maybe that was the intention, but I didn't like it and I think it's because of how bad the comedy is; to close I will make reference to the aspect of time travel; Many made reference to the influence of "Back to the Future" and they are right, I think there is more influence in that film than any other, my problem is that everything is justified in such a simple way that instead of being a tribute or influence, it proves to be a wrong parody, although not everything is bad because there are elements that surprised me and that I liked to see and that made me think that there were very good ideas in this film, but unfortunately they were not developed in the best way. Despite not having a positive opinion of the film, I recommend watching it, it is short, fast, has good horror scenes and is available on Amazon Prime Video.
