True Detective: Night Country - Review of Part 2 & 3 [ES - EN]

En las últimas dos semanas con los estrenos del segundo y tercer episodio de la cuarta temporada de "True Detective", he tomado una posición cauta o paciente; no quería que las opiniones positivas y negativas que acompañan a esta temporada crearán una expectativa errónea; justamente eso me hizo pensar en no hacer reseña de cada episodio estrenado, pero se me hizo imposible y es que justamente antes de comenzar la última mitad de esta corta historia, he leído críticas sobre el relato y el fanservice que parece que al creador de esta producción, Nic Pizzolatto, no es de su completo agrado y es eso lo que extrañamente me ha motivado aún más al ver el segundo y tercer episodio.

In the last two weeks with the premieres of the second and third episode of the fourth season of "True Detective", I have taken a cautious or patient position; I did not want the positive and negative opinions that accompany this season to create a wrong expectation; that's exactly what made me think about not reviewing each episode released, but it became impossible for me, because just before starting the last half of this short story, I have read reviews about the story and the fanservice that seems that the creator of this production, Nic Pizzolatto, is not completely pleased with and that is what strangely has motivated me even more to watch the second and third episode.

En la breve reseña del primer episodio hice referencia a lo que es el uso de elementos de terror y lo sobrenatural en esta nueva historia; son características que me agradan porque son perfectas por el lugar en donde se desarrolla la historia; un lugar pequeño, en dónde a finales de año deben pasar por una etapa de oscuridad plena, debe ser algo que afecte de alguna manera el comportamiento de cada quien, por ejemplo creando situaciones, ilusiones que serán inexplicables; en mi opinión no me molesta nada de esto en esta cuarta historia de esta serie, como dije, son elementos antes no vistos o con una mejor o realista explicación; justamente ese elemento se hace presente aún más en el tercer episodio, el cual se enfoca en una de sus protagonistas, pero mejor vamos en orden y comencemos con el segundo episodio el cual por ahora es el que más me ha gustado.

In the brief review of the first episode I made reference to the use of elements of terror and the supernatural in this new story; they are characteristics that I like because they are perfect for the place where the story takes place; a small place, where at the end of the year they must go through a stage of full darkness, it must be something that somehow affects the behavior of each one, for example creating situations, illusions that will be inexplicable; in my opinion I don't mind any of this in this fourth story of this series, as I said, they are elements not seen before or with a better or realistic explanation; just that element is present even more in the third episode, which focuses on one of its protagonists, but we better go in order and start with the second episode which for now is the one I liked the most.

El segundo episodio está enfocado en el personaje de la jefa "Liz Danvers" interpretado por Jodie Foster; en la publicación anterior sobre esta serie, di una breve opinión por la poca Información, pero después de ver el segundo episodio, puedo decir que es de esos personajes que puedes fácilmente odiar y amar, todo es por la buena actuación de Foster. Este personaje es manipulador, molesto, abusa del poder, es alguien frustrante, pero a la vez es alguien que al padecer de un trauma la hizo peor de lo que ya era; justamente eso me fascina de "Liz", su imperfección nos hace ver qué no es buena, podrá ser considerada como buena policía, pero no es una buena persona, es cruel, no demuestra sus verdaderos sentimientos y repito, su actitud, su manera de ser contra todos, es lo que hace aún mejor ese segundo episodio.

El tercer episodio está enfocado en hacer una mejor presentación de la patrullera "Evangeline Navarro" interpretado por Kali Reis, su pasado se ve muy brevemente en el segundo episodio, pero en el tercero se profundiza en diferentes etapas del personaje, uno desde su punto de vista y otro de "Liz"; todo el relato del origen del personaje con respecto a su relación con el poblado de "Ennis", tiene como principal función para el desarrollo de lo sobrenatural que se hace más evidente en este episodio y lo que parece que ha creado un rechazo en ciertos fans; yo creo que es perfecto por lo que pude citar anteriormente y es que en un lugar que padece de una noche muy larga, la presión, obligación, frustración que crea depresión en ese personaje, la convierte en una víctima de su propia mente y eso la hace ver cosas inexplicables; con esto no quiero decir que la cuarta temporada de True Detective es como un film "Jumpscare" o algo parecido a ese género dentro del terror, solo que como sucedió en la primera temporada, lo inexplicable posiblemente tenga una razonable respuesta del porqué sucede.

The second episode is focused on the character of the boss "Liz Danvers" played by Jodie Foster; in the previous post about this series, I gave a brief opinion because of the little information, but after watching the second episode, I can say that it is one of those characters that you can easily hate and love, all because of the good performance of Foster. This character is manipulative, annoying, abuses power, is someone frustrating, but at the same time is someone who suffering from a trauma made her worse than she already was; just that fascinates me about "Liz", her imperfection makes us see what she is not good, she may be considered a good cop, but she is not a good person, she is cruel, she does not show her true feelings and I repeat, her attitude, her way of being against everyone, is what makes even better that second episode.

The third episode is focused on making a better presentation of the patrolwoman "Evangeline Navarro" played by Kali Reis, her past is seen very briefly in the second episode, but in the third episode delves into different stages of the character, one from her point of view and another from "Liz"; the whole story of the origin of the character regarding her relationship with the village of "Ennis", has as main function for the development of the supernatural that becomes more evident in this episode and what seems to have created a rejection in certain fans; I think it is perfect for what I could quote above and that is that in a place that suffers from a very long night, the pressure, obligation, frustration that creates depression in that character, makes her a victim of her own mind and that makes her see inexplicable things; with this I do not mean that the fourth season of True Detective is like a "Jumpscare" film or something similar to that genre within the horror, only that as happened in the first season, the inexplicable possibly has a reasonable answer as to why it happens.

Ambos episodios son importantes para el relato del caso, por supuesto que al enfocarse en las dos protagonistas, puede ser que no exista un avance en la investigación, pero eso no es cierto, ya que de manera diferente o con un relato desde un punto de vista diferente, veremos cómo este extraño caso va transcurriendo, va avanzando aunque también hay que señalar que cada paso hacia adelante, vamos descubriendo cosas que posiblemente se perciban como predecibles, pero en realidad es todo lo contrario y es eso lo que más me ha agradado en los dos episodios; ahora con respecto a lo que considero un fanservice para los fieles fans de la primera temporada, es cierto es que es agradable ver ciertas características conocidas y que en esta oportunidad necesita algo más para crear impacto y creo que es por eso el uso de lo "sobrenatural", uso comillas para resaltar esa palabra porque creo que existe ese juego con el espectador que en la primera temporada pensó que eso era parte de la historia y en dónde la cual, el caso era más realista y cruel; justamente es eso mi expectativa sobre la resolución del caso en esta temporada.

Both episodes are important for the story of the case, of course by focusing on the two protagonists, it may be that there is no progress in the investigation, but that is not true, because in a different way or with a story from a different point of view, we will see how this strange case is going on, is advancing although it should also be noted that each step forward, we discover things that may be perceived as predictable, but in reality it is quite the opposite and that is what I liked most in the two episodes; now with respect to what I consider a fanservice for the faithful fans of the first season, it is true that it is nice to see certain known characteristics and that this time it needs something more to create impact and I think that is why the use of the "supernatural", I use quotation marks to highlight that word because I think there is that game with the viewer that in the first season thought that was part of the story and where, the case was more realistic and cruel; that is precisely my expectation about the resolution of the case in this season.

Entiendo críticas y quejas con respecto a lo que considero que es lo que ha enojado al creador de esta serie y a cierto público; lo sucedido en el tercer episodio en dónde elementos de terror sobrenatural se hace más evidentes, pero creo que es un elemento en función del relato de una historia que llegó a su primera mitad; creo que lo de usar características importantes de la primera temporada puede ser un elemento erróneo que desvirtúe la atención al caso en esta temporada y eso revela en qué el público nunca pudo conectar con las anteriores temporadas porque no mostraron los mismos elementos de la exitosa primera y ahora quieren nuevamente eso, que se repita y por los momentos considero equivocado porque los personajes son buenos y creo que el caso también, hay buen suspenso, buenas revelaciones y espero que para los tres episodios finales se tenga un correcto cierre.

I understand criticisms and complaints regarding what I consider to be what has angered the creator of this series and a certain audience; what happened in the third episode where elements of supernatural terror become more evident, but I think it is an element in function of the telling of a story that reached its first half; I think that using important characteristics of the first season can be a wrong element that detracts the attention to the case in this season and that reveals that the public could never connect with the previous seasons because they did not show the same elements of the successful first one and now they want to repeat that again, and for the moment I consider wrong because the characters are good and I think the case is good too, there is good suspense, good revelations and I hope that for the final three episodes there will be a correct closure.
