War Machine (2026) - Movie Review [ES - EN]

Desde comienzo de este año, los servicios de streaming se han enfocado en estrenar películas de acción y, aunque las que he visto no me han parecido las mejores, pero de igual manera decidí ver el último estreno de Netflix, "War Machine", un film que une la acción y la ciencia ficción para relatar la historia de un grupo de soldados aspirantes a ser Rangers, quienes en una de sus últimas asignaciones se encontrarán con un enemigo fuera de este mundo, lo cual les hará poner a prueba su entrenamiento para sobrevivir e intentar acabar con tan poderosa amenaza.

Since the beginning of this year, streaming services have focused on releasing action movies, and although the ones I've seen haven't seemed like the best to me, I still decided to watch Netflix's latest release, War Machine, a film that combines action and science fiction to tell the story of a group of soldiers aspiring to be Rangers, who on one of their last assignments encounter an otherworldly enemy, testing their training to survive and try to defeat such a powerful threat.

Este film fue estrenado el pasado 6 de marzo y fue dirigido por Patrick Hughes, quien en su carrera se destaca por trabajos como "The Expendables 3", "The Hitman's Bodyguard" y otros más; en este film no solo cumple con el rol de director, sino también el de guionista, quien junto a James Beaufort, crearon una de las historias menos originales que he visto en vida como fan del cine; justamente esta es una de las críticas negativas que tengo sobre este entretenido film que usa como base lo visto en el clásico "Predator (1987)", aunque deja atrás ese protagonista típico de los héroes de acción de los 80 y sí crean a un personaje para explorar temas como el padecer de estrés postraumático, el aislamiento, la culpa y, por supuesto, la depresión, pero aparte de eso, no pierden el tiempo en convertir a este film en una gran propaganda a lo referente al sistema militar estadounidense.

This film was released on March 6 and was directed by Patrick Hughes, who is known for his work on films such as "The Expendables 3," "The Hitman's Bodyguard," and others. In this film, he not only serves as director, but also as screenwriter, who, together with James Beaufort, created one of the least original stories I have ever seen in my life as a movie fan. This is precisely one of the negative criticisms I have about this entertaining film, which is based on the classic Predator (1987), although it leaves behind the typical protagonist of 1980s action heroes and creates a character to explore issues such as post-traumatic stress, isolation, guilt, and, of course, depression. But apart from that, they waste no time in turning this film into a great propaganda piece for the US military system.

El desempeño en la dirección por parte de Hughes es mucho mejor, en especial en el momento en que esta historia pasa por su breve primer acto de introducción a lo que ha generado una gran aceptación en el público en general y esas son las escenas de acción que ocurren tanto en el segundo acto hasta gran parte del final; en ese momento el ritmo del film se hace mucho más dinámico, la acción es constante y aunque cuenta con ciertas y necesarias pausas para el desarrollo del protagonista, nuevamente retoma el ritmo rápido con mucha tensión y caos, lo cual sí puedo decir que se nota un buen trabajo del director y del uso del CGI lo cual supera lo visto en muchas otras películas estrenadas a comienzo del año; no hay duda de que lo entretenido de las secuencias de acción es de lo mejor del film.

Hughes' direction is much better, especially when the story moves through its brief first act introducing what has been widely accepted by the general public, namely the action scenes that occur in the second act and up to a large part of the ending. At that point, the film's pace becomes much more dynamic, the action is constant, and although there are certain necessary pauses for the protagonist's development, it quickly returns to a fast pace with a lot of tension and chaos. I can say that the director's work and the use of CGI are evident, surpassing what we have seen in many other films released earlier this year. There is no doubt that the entertaining action sequences are the best part of the film.

La actuación de Alan Ritchson me pareció correcta, tampoco debo decir que es la mejor porque siendo sincero, no se puede captar el sufrimiento que padece su personaje lo cual es el motivo principal para ser parte de los Rangers y es un acierto del guión el demostrar por flashback los diferentes sucesos que como dije, motivan sus actos en el film; lo que si es evidente que Ritchson posee la imagen de una estrella de acción tanto de los años 80 como 90 y creo que es una característica fundamental para el tipo de films, aunque eso sí, su personaje no es arrogante, no existe la necesidad de generar un personaje que se sienta poderoso o único; en eso sí acierta la actuación de Ritchson que se aleja de su interpretación casi robótica de "Reacher" y se nota más natural o normal.

I thought Alan Ritchson's performance was fine, but I can't say it was the best because, to be honest, you can't really grasp the suffering his character goes through, which is the main reason for him joining the Rangers. It's a good move on the part of the script to use flashbacks to show the different events that, as I said, motivate his actions in the film. What is evident is that Ritchson has the image of an action star from both the 80s and 90s, and I think that's a fundamental characteristic for this type of film, although his character is not arrogant; there is no need to create a character who feels powerful or unique. In this respect, Ritchson's performance is spot on, moving away from his almost robotic portrayal of "Reacher" and coming across as more natural or normal.

War Machine es el tipo de film que preferiblemente espero ver en Netflix o en otro servicio de streaming, es un film entretenido, corto, directo, cumple con el rol por el cual fue hecho y superó mis bajas expectativas por el buen acierto en sus secuencia de acción lo que cual repito, son lo mejor del film; ahora este no es ni de cerca la mejor película de que he visto en el primer trimestre de este año y eso es debido a la nula originalidad y es que tomar muchas referencias a películas como "Predator", "War of the Worlds" (no la del 2025) y "Battle: Los Angeles" es de verdad una señal de poca imaginación, lo cual me sorprendió de mala manera al ver la película, pero creo que más me sorprendió que para algunos se haya obviado el ripoff hacia un clásico de la acción, ciencia ficción y hasta puedo decir, del terror como es Predator; de igual manera, si quieren ver un film de acción, correcto y entretenido, entonces vean esta nueva producción de Netflix.

War Machine is the kind of film I prefer to watch on Netflix or another streaming service. It's entertaining, short, straightforward, fulfills the role for which it was made, and exceeded my low expectations thanks to its well-executed action sequences, which, I repeat, are the best part of the film. However, this is not even close to being the best film I have seen in the first quarter of this year, due to its lack of originality and the fact that it makes many references to films such as "Predator," "War of the Worlds" (not the 2025 version), and "Battle: Los Angeles" is really a sign of a lack of imagination, which surprised me in a bad way when I saw the film, but I think I was even more surprised that some people overlooked the rip-off of a classic action, science fiction, and even horror film like Predator. Similarly, if you want to see a decent and entertaining action film, then watch this new Netflix production.
