Weapons - Movie Review [ES - EN]

El 2025 se ha observado que el género del terror obtuvo relevancia con regresos de franquicias exitosas a las salas de cine, pero también con estrenos de historias originales que han obtenido excelentes críticas; una de esas películas es "Weapons" dirigida y escrita por Zach Cregger, quien alcanzó la fama con "Barbarian" (2022), un film que usó diferentes relatos terroríficos que se entrelazan para terminar en un solo lugar y justamente esas características vuelve a ser utilizadas por este director y guionista quién usa el punto de vista de diferentes personajes para relatar una historia que usa como punto de partida la desaparición de 17 niños que huyeron de sus hogares a la misma hora y en la misma noche.

Con Weapons me pasó lo que me sucede con muchos films que me generan una gran expectativa, estos siempre decido dar espacio o tiempo para después verlas sin el ruido de diferentes opiniones que pueda generar; lamentablemente no fui precavido al leer ciertas críticas y opiniones lo cual me hizo sentir que no disfrutaría por completo la película y no lo digo por sentirme decepcionado, sino porque me hubiera gustado descubrir ciertas cosas por cuenta propia antes de verla; a pesar de lo antes dicho, mi opinión inmediata desde su relevante comienzo fue en estar presente ante el relato de un acontecimiento que nadie desea hablar, un evento que debe obligatoriamente borrarse de la memoria de los afectados de manera directa e indirectamente y eso fue suficiente para engancharme de esta historia que se va relatando desde diferentes puntos de vista lo cual como dije anteriormente, es una práctica que ya ha realizado Cregger.

Este film usa de base un misterio el cual es la acción motivante de alguno de los relatos compartidos y funciona muy bien cuando existe la necesidad mantener el secreto de la desaparición de los niños, pero creo que lo mejor es que la historia no se enfoca solamente en eso y da paso a otros misterios más importantes lo cual termina siendo la verdadera base de todo acontecimiento en ese film; en eso el guion escrito por Cregger funciona muy bien porque creo que no existe una necesidad de alargar algo que primeramente es lo necesario para enganchar al espectador, pero también ofrece algo nuevo que hace no solo evolucionar a la historia, sino que hace que el interés siga presente sin importar que revelación se haga presente.

With Weapons, I experienced what often happens to me with films that generate high expectations. I always decide to give them space or time so that I can watch them later without the noise of different opinions that they may generate. Unfortunately, I wasn't careful enough to avoid reading certain reviews and opinions, which made me feel that I wouldn't fully enjoy the film. I don't say this because I was disappointed, but because I would have liked to discover certain things for myself before seeing it. Despite the above, my immediate opinion from its relevant beginning was to be present for the story of an event that no one wants to talk about, an event that must be erased from the memory of those directly and indirectly affected, and that was enough to hook me into this story, which is told from different points of view, which, as I said before, is a practice that Cregger has already done.

This film uses a mystery as its basis, which is the motivating action behind some of the stories shared, and it works very well when there is a need to keep the disappearance of the children a secret. However, I think the best thing is that the story does not focus solely on that and gives way to other more important mysteries, which end up being the real basis for everything that happens in the film. In this regard, the script written by Cregger works very well because I believe there is no need to prolong something that is primarily necessary to hook the viewer, but it also offers something new that not only makes the story evolve, but also keeps the interest alive regardless of what revelations are made.

Uno de los aspectos que más disfruté de "Barbarian", fue el uso de la cámara o las diferentes imágenes que tomó Cregger para separar los relatos de los protagonistas en ese film; ahora en esta oportunidad, no es tan evidente ese tipo de cambios en las tomas a pesar de que se cuenta con muchos puntos de vista de diferentes personajes, aunque si puede demostrar cierta intensidad en las escenas de acción, pero cambios en donde el lente de la cámara o la iluminación sean diferentes, eso no existe para nada; ahora, el elemento sorpresivo o las típicas escenas Jump-Scare si hacen apariencia, pero de una manera cuidada, sin haber un abuso, lo cual las hace bastante efectivas, a eso, anexo lo gráfico de ciertas escenas las cuales son correctas porque también hacen apariencia en momentos adecuados y le hace pensar en lo meticuloso que es este director.

However, it does show a certain intensity in the action scenes, but changes where the camera lens or lighting are different do not exist at all. Now, the element of surprise or the typical jump-scare scenes do make an appearance, but in a careful way, without being overused, which makes them quite effective. To that, I would add the graphics of certain scenes, which are appropriate because they also appear at the right moments and make you think about how meticulous this director is.

No haré una mayor descripción con respecto a los personajes porque creo que sería hacer revelaciones importantes y pueden afectar la experiencia que tengan las personas que decidan ver el film y en mis publicaciones, hacer spoilers es algo que no me agrada de hacer y por eso haré una breve referencia a lo que es el trabajo actoral tanto de Julia Garner y Josh Brolin; la primera interpreta a "Justine" quien es la maestra de los niños desaparecidos, creo que ella ofrece un punto de vista muy cierto en dónde debería ser vista como una víctima más, pero la realidad es tratada como la culpable y eso es causado por la visión de los padres hacia ella, en especial la de "Archer" (Brolin), quien representa muy bien el sentimiento de desespero y la necesidad de encontrar una respuesta, así sea sospechando de quien sea, ambos personajes son importantes, aunque en mi opinión, ninguno de los dos sean vistos como héroes, ni tampoco como completas víctimas.

En algunos momentos pude leer que está película no puede ser considerada completamente de terror por el hecho en que varias escenas generan risas, creo que no solamente en la actualidad, sino en muchas otras películas, el humor es algo que funciona muy bien en el terror, película como "Return of the Living Dead", "A Nightmare on Elm Street" o la misma "Scream", por tener escenas o personajes humorísticos no son menormente terroríficas, todo lo contrario, estás son películas que saben el momento en como hacer el humor y terror al mismo tiempo y en Weapons, creo que Cregger sabe cómo hacerlo, algo que hizo en su anterior film y en su carrera en el mundo del entrenamiento al estar muy ligado al humor; pienso que también existe un aspecto muy importante en esta película y es la influencia de otros directores o por lo menos se me hizo fácil el comparar, me refiero a trabajos realizados por Ari Aster y M. Night Shyamalan, esto lo digo porque en Weapons, el relato pareciera ser una fábula de terror así como se observa en "Midsommar", pero también los elementos que van apareciendo en el film, lo cual provee entendimiento de lo que está sucediendo, es algo que práctica Shyamalan en sus films, esto es algo que me ha gustado porque a pesar de que este film es basado y motivado en un misterio, no depende de uno solo sino de otos más lo cual me pareció perfecto.

I believe that humor works very well in horror films, not only today but in many other films as well. Films such as "Return of the Living Dead," "A Nightmare on Elm Street," and even "Scream" are no less terrifying because they have humorous scenes or characters. On the contrary, these are films that know how to use humor and horror at the same time, and in Weapons, I think Cregger knows how to do it, something he did in his previous film and in his career in the world of training, being closely linked to humor. I think there is also a very important aspect to this film, which is the influence of other directors, or at least it was easy for me to make the comparison. I am referring to the work of Ari Aster and M. Night Shyamalan. I say this because in Weapons, the story seems to be a horror fable, as seen in Midsommar, But also, the elements that appear in the film, which provide an understanding of what is happening, are something that Shyamalan does in his films. I liked this because, although this film is based on and motivated by a mystery, it does not depend on just one but on several, which I thought was perfect.
